LEGO Star Wars 2019 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!
Oky replied to Stash2Sixx's topic in LEGO Star Wars
This is what Star Wars has come to, folks. Santa Porgs. A toy of a creature designed to sell toys dressed as the mascot of a holiday designed to make you buy toys. My brain can't repel irony of that magnitude! -
Ghosts to add to Hidden Side?
Oky replied to Fenghuang0296's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I don't think skeletons or zombies fit into the Hidden Side theme, unless you modify the zombies to look like a possessed minifigure like the ones from the Hidden Side sets. I know there is a skeleton in the graveyard set that seems to be popping out of its grave on the box art, but I think it's just supposed to be part of the scenery due to the neutral head. However, some ideas that come to mind are: NRG versions of the Ninja Power Miners monsters Electro Carnage Red Skull Red She Hulk Hades Genie Killer Frost TLBM Mr. Freeze Firestorm Infearno Darth Maul Savage Opress -

I just saw it too and I really liked it! I do agree with your ranking of it along with the other movies though. It has amazing visuals (obviously), great music (I smiled every time a song or musical cue from the past films started playing), good themes, and good jokes. Was it completely necessary? Probably not. Does it have as many memorable moments as the other movies? I don't think so. Was it still an entertaining and well made film? Definitely! Therefore, I do highly recommend it and hope people will learn from this to not be so quick to judge a movie they haven't seen yet. That pretty much sums up this entire wave. I don't blame you for not noticing that sorry excuse for a recreation of that vehicle. A full scale one that actually opens up and everything would have been great. It would have been cool to get some Bensons as well.- 279 replies

Fair enough. I still think it's different to actually have the fantasy creatures live in modern times rather than just referencing modern day things, but I guess that's close enough for general audiences. I'm sure, though, that people will see the difference once they actually watch the film. Speaking of negative preconceptions, it looks like the director of Toy Story 4 wasn't lying as the first reviews of the film are very positive and say that there is indeed a lot more going on in the film than is apparent from the trailers! I can't wait to see it now! To the box office... and beyond!- 279 replies

I definitely see potential (just think of all the fantasy creatures we could get!), but I don't think Lego will go for it. So far we've only ever gotten sets based on Pixar sequels, i.e. franchises that have already proven themselves to be popular/profitable (not counting the Lego Ideas Wall-E or the Disney Princess Merida set). And even if they made sets based on it, they'd probably relegate them to a small number of Juniors sets (or whatever that theme is called now) just like the last few Pixar themes we've gotten. It's sad to see TLG having so little faith in Disney/Pixar sets. I think they severely underestimate the popularity of the films and the demand for regular Lego sets based on them. I wish they would invest more of their money and effort into them instead of wasting it on much less popular animated feature licenses like Angry Birds or Trolls 2. I could definitely see them doing some Marvel and Star Wars sets based on these shows as part of their respective evergreen themes, but not much beyond that.

Probably because the opening of Galaxy's Edge overshadowed the release of this trailer quite a bit in terms of Disney news as it happened the same night. I actually think that the big brother looks more like Jack Black who I could totally see playing this part as well, but yeah, good choices for the leads. I've seen others say that they are getting a Dreamworks vibe from this trailer, but honestly I don't see it. Sure, Shrek had some references to modern times, but the world the characters lived in was still clearly your typical medieval fantasy land with magic and everything. We've never seen fantasy creatures living in a modern world without magic like this. This feels very different to me.- 279 replies

We finally got our first look at Pixar's next film, Onward! I was already intrigued by the premise, but this just made me really excited to see it! The animation looks like standard fair for Pixar, but the world and all the characters look like a lot of fun already! Especially love the bit with the unicorns, although that makes me wonder if the pegasus on the side of their van is also seen as a pest? Also, I can't help but hear Rex Dangervest out of Chris Pratt's character. Honestly, this is what The Good Dinosaur should have been like. They had an interesting premise with the dinosaurs surviving and evolving into the dominant species, but did hardly anything with it. Can't wait to see this movie!- 279 replies

Well, the jokes and music choice in this one aren't great in my opinion. Also, it doesn't really show much new except for a few shots of Duke Kaboom, although this might be a good thing because according to a tweet from the director Disney has been restraining themselves from revealing too much. They did this with the Endgame trailers and seem to be doing so with Frozen 2 as well, so here's to hoping that the film will indeed have much more to offer than is apparent from the trailers.- 279 replies

I don't think the Stranger Things set is any indication of Lego getting more mature. People were saying this when the Simpsons sets came out too which is arguably an even more mature property. But the truth is, Lego has been making sets based on pretty dark/mature material for a long time now. Temple of Doom anyone? I mean, we got several Deadpool minifigs for crying out loud. No, I think Overwatch is closer to being an indication of Lego pushing their boundaries since they previously stayed away from first-person shooters. But even that IP is so cartoony and sci-fi that it's no different from any of the other licenses. However, if this is indeed the case, I'd say bring on Lego Alien or any other mature franchise they can get their hands on!

The FB Guy is probably talking about 76021 The Milano Spaceship Rescue which is indeed a good set to get, but 76081 The Milano vs. The Abilisk is currently the set with the most Guardians (especially if you count Nebula) and is much cheaper. It’s only missing Rocket and you can get him along with grown up Groot in 76102 Thor's Weapon Quest.

I wouldn't go that far, but I kinda agree. It's not bad, but it just doesn't seem that interesting to me either. I considered giving it another shot when the sets were released, but nope, still couldn't get into it. Just not my cup of tea I guess. Why not? If an Ideas project based on the 80s version was able to get made, why not one for the modern (and arguably superior) version? I've been thinking about submitting one myself. I'm glad you watched that excellent show though!

Interesting question! And yes, you should definitely check out Avatar: The Last Airbender! (Stay as far away from the movie as possible though!) For me, there was rarely ever a time where my decision to check out a piece of entertainment was purely due to the Lego sets coming out as I usually like to be informed about all nerdy pop culture media anyway. However, I had never completely seen Ghostbusters because I had seen snippets of the movies here and there and felt like I knew enough about the franchise that watching it wasn't necessary. But when I won the HQ set in a contest, I finally had a reason to finally watch the two original movies and part of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon while building the set to have some context for all the details and references in it. I still gave the reboot a hard pass though! Now I kinda regret missing out on the Ecto-1. I've also never watched Dr. Who and was almost motivated enough to finally check it out when the Lego sets were released, but I only own the Dimensions level pack and still felt too intimidated by the large amount of episodes.

It's good to finally get an idea of the plot of the film. I do have to admit that it looks like more of the same, but I'll keep an open mind and hope that Pixar will pleasantly surprise us like they always do. Not really. Sunnyside was the toys submitting themselves to multiple children rather than just one. Bo is a lost toy and therefore truly without an owner. I think it will be interesting to see a toy embrace the owner-free life instead of getting traumatized or turning evil because of it. This will probably cause Woody to reexamine his own life. Questioning his purpose in life perfectly matches Forky's theme of existential crisis. I see people theorizing that Bo will turn out to be the surprise villain in this one, but I don't really see that happening. The Super Carlin Brothers' theory about Giggle McDimples being the villain and Bo maybe being her pawn makes a lot more sense to me. I guess we'll have to wait and see.- 279 replies

LEGO Disney Minifigures & D2Cs - Rumors and Discussion
Oky replied to Robert8's topic in LEGO Licensed
It's likely because Disney's animated character designs are purposefully based on simple shapes that are easy to recognize and relate with. These shapes are lost in the transition to the standard minifig body shape, so when Jasmine doesn't have that recognizable slender pear-shape or Jafar doesn't have those broad T-shaped shoulders, you stop seeing the character and just see a minifig masquerading as that character. That's why characters with molded heads tend to look better, because they retain some of their original recognizable shape. Edna Mode and all the Toy Story figs are a good example of this. Here is a good explanation of it. Personally, like @Megaflora, I think they did the best they could with these figs.- 961 replies

LEGO Disney Minifigures & D2Cs - Rumors and Discussion
Oky replied to Robert8's topic in LEGO Licensed
DUCKTALES! WOO-OO! Bless me bagpipes! At last, my childhood dream of a Scrooge McDuck minifig is coming true, and along with all the triplets no less! I can see how people are upset about three spots being taken up by recolors of the the same fig, but I don't care. I'm thrilled! If I had to nitpick, I'd say it's a bit disappointing that he doesn't have a real cane and that his hat looks strangely thin and plain, but it's close enough! Frozone, a proper Edna, and Jasmine and Jafar to complete the main casts of two franchises from the first series were high on my wanted list too, so I'm happy about those! Chip & Dale are great as well, although I wish they were the Rescue Rangers versions, but I get why they went with the classic versions. Besides, it shouldn't be hard to modify them. I don't feel too strongly about the rest, but they're all well done and I'm glad to see that they all come with accessories this time, so I'm definitely getting them. The only disappointment for me, like everyone, is Steamboat Mickey & Minnie, but I understand that they are here to justify the new hat molds for the Ideas set, and at least now I have another reason to pass on that set, so whatever. And complaining that Goofy, Pluto, or [insert popular character here] is not included is completely pointless since they have so many iconic characters and will never be able to make everyone happy. Just be glad we finally get another series at all. I'm sure we will get Goofy eventually. Overall, I'm very happy with this series and can't wait to get it! Now if only I could get that DuckTales theme out of my head...- 961 replies

Looks like TLG spared no expense when they made this dinosaur.

Wow. These are sad, strange little sets and they have my pity. As a huge fan of the original theme, these seem like a far cry from what has come before. Woody and Jesse look so off with those heads and short limbs. At least Bo Peep looks good, but I'm afraid she will look too short next to the old Woody and Jesse. As for the builds, I already had low expectations with these being 4+ sets, but damn... I mean, just look at that "roller coaster"! It doesn't even come with any exclusive figs, so that's a hard pass. The only set that looks decent is the RC one as it's the only one that's properly scaled and doesn't look too junior-ized, plus those tiny army men are cool, even though it's disappointing that they aren't printed. I will probably only get that one and the carnival set since the latter has all the new figs except for Jesse and Forky and I will probably just bricklink those. I am a sad space ranger now...

Yeah, I didn’t mention it in the review since this tends to happen with other licensed helmets, but mine does pop off somewhat easily too. I don’t mind it though as I usually just leave him in his armor and don’t touch the head much.

Nice! I was actually going to suggest that design for the back, but decided against it since it makes the doors so thick and causes the side walls next to the doors to split open along with the doors, but if you're ok with that, it's probably the easiest solution.
-
I agree with Nick's suggestion of lowering the surfboard racks and the cheese slopes in the front. You can remove the 1x4 plates under the rack tiles to make them thinner and keep the gap between the roof and the racks as seen below. However, I think the main thing that needs work is the back of the van. As you said yourself, it's too blocky, and the hinges sticking out the sides don't look good either. Also, I think the windows need to be higher. I'd suggest completely redesigning the back using SNOT to make the windows more slanted. This will also allow you to use different kind of hinges. Something like this perhaps:

2019 Box Office Predictions and Discussion
Oky replied to Khscarymovie4's topic in Culture & Multimedia
Sounds about right, although I'd switch the two Captain Marvel movies. Shazam looks good, but not outperform-a-Marvel-movie good. Also, considering how many people are sick of Frozen at this point, I could see Toy Story doing better than Frozen, especially if it keeps the Toy Story tradition of topping the previous movie going. I could also see Aladdin in there somewhere, but certainly hope that won't be the case. -
Actually, I'm beginning to think that the Omnic Bastion was supposed to be their attempt at a minifig-scale one, even if it doesn't feel like it, because compared to Reinhardt & D.Va who are also oversized, he seems to be about the right scale. Let's hope they will have a better minifig version of classic Bastion in the next wave if there is one. Indeed, which is one of the reasons why I like Bastion so much. Although the Reinhardt short is even more of a tearjerker!

I think what they did makes sense since the black part does cover over half of her head. They just didn’t do it well. Yes. There are a few at the end of the review.
