[MOC] Eldorado Fortress Expansion -- free instructions
iragm replied to iragm's topic in Pirate MOCs
Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it. Any negative feedback is also great as it helps me improve! -
I have created an add-on to Eldorado Fortress: I've provided the .io file in the hopes that others will add additional modules -- I'd love to see a range of buildings like a tavern, stable, blacksmith, cooperage, etc. Enjoy! https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-151744/irabricks/eldorado-fortress-expansion/

What new edition of pi054 was made? pi054 (I call him "ascot guy") is one of my favorite minifigures ever.
-
Yes. I actually wish we could get the tricorne with white hair, it would be great for admirals and such. And people didn't wear shakos until later. And the new female pirate's torso doesn't have the female outline, so it also can be used on a man wearing an ascot, which should come in handy. It's a construction toy. Make it your own.

The strongest -- and unfortunately weakest -- bit of the set might be its modularity. I was hoping to see Lagoon Lockup and Sabre Island modules to add to it. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any consistency in the placement of the clips and bars: they are closer to hinges like on the Lion Knight's Castle than to a true modular system. So, any expansion MOCs that people make need to be targeted at a certain part of the build. Anyway, here's a quick test module that adds a cannon and dock in between the crane and the building on the right side when the set is displayed in the open configuration: I may take a look at other locations to add stuff tomorrow.

The original cost 59.99, inflation adjusted, that's $146.91, so this is a bit pricier. Has anyone else noticed that Lego's pricing of these remakes (B-Bay, Castle, this) seems determined by the Bricklink price of a used set? This does look pretty similar to a lot of the Eldorado MOCs on Rebrickable. That's not a good or a bad thing, it's just a faithful recreation of the original. But honestly, the design is not as good as what @SleeplessNight has done with Sabre Island and Lagoon Lock-up. I think I would have preferred one of those more colorful designs. I slightly prefer @Samarth's cutter (here) to the one included, but this one is quite nice regardless. This will most likely set the tone of a lot of imperial MOCs for the next 2-3 years, so the choice of yellow instead of tan buildings and black instead of brown for the docks is interesting. Kind of a shame there aren't more roof bricks included, but given that this is more Eldorado and less Trading Post, I understand. The modular design is its strongest part and I anticipate a lot of great MOCs that are compatible with this. I'm already looking to see if I can add a second crane. And I am drooling about the prospect of buying some of these elements, especially the captain's bicorne, on PAB. Overall, this is a pretty "by-the-numbers", "play-it-safe" nostalgia-bait set, but unlike the Disney remakes, Lego's offerings DO capture the magic of the originals. This is a must-buy for me.

This is the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Absolutely wonderful to have. Thank you!! I do not expect to be selected, rather I was designing a MOC anyway and decided to put it in to get some feedback. Look for free instructions on Rebrickable about an hour after it gets denied :)

Barracuda and Clipper are extremely common. I see 2-3 a week sell in bulk goodwill lots and I've personally bought, restored and resold several of each. If you learn how to oxyclean and iron the sails, a few minutes of work makes them look good as new and they sell very quickly on eBay. Skull's Eye is a hard one to find, I have only seen 2 sell in the last year, and it usually goes for $400+ especially if the sails are visible. It seems that Renegade Runner outsold it 10:1. On that note, if you learn how to make custom sails, a Renegade Runner with no minifigures and custom sails will sell all day long for about $100 -- and it usually pays for a good chunk of the bulk lot. Budget for this kind of thing. I have never once lost money buying a bulk lot, and as prices rise people without disposable income are priced out. Every $100 increase psychologically or literally prices out another group of potential buyers. Once you get up to $300 or $400, most people get scared off. But that's only 2-3 large vintage sets, which are quite easy to rebuild and resell! Some suggestions: Never buy from someone who knows what they are selling -- look for people who don't care. Goodwill is the best, hands down. It's better to be quick than to bid in an auction. I have scripts that I wrote that scrape at the major sites and notify me instantly when new stuff is posted. I know I'm not the only one doing this because often stuff is gone before I can hit buy. Value each lot based on what you can see. Certain parts are extremely valuable -- like the blue palm tree tops -- and can easily justify purchasing a lot even if there's not much else there. If you see only a blue palm tree top, don't bid as if there's an entire 6271 present though, because the rest of the set could easily have been lost. Learn to resell what you don't want. I usually flip 1/4 to 3/4 of each lot I buy. It's enough to pay for the lot, so in I only spend time sorting and rebuilding sets. It's fun and hard to say no to free Lego. Plus, I don't care for some themes like classic space, so it feels wrong to have a bin full of those parts that I'll never use. I sell them to people who are thrilled to have them, and I keep the pirate and castle stuff that I love. Win/win.

Game companies and movies do that to build hype. Lego struggles to pack and ship their initial waves fast enough -- popular sets like the modulars and Rivendell sell out early on, before they can be restocked. They don't need the hype. Additionally, a lot of Lego sales come from word of mouth, kids seeing sets at other kids houses and then asking for them for Christmas. Most movies and games are forgotten about within a couple years (yes there are exceptions, but that's the norm). With a 2 year life cycle on most sets, Lego is in a very different business than most companies are. Now, Lego could produce a lot more copies in advance of the release and do the teaser/hype thing, but if the set was a flop, they'd take a huge loss and need to move product that had already been produced. And if the set exceeds expectations and sells out anyway, people would be mad that they can't get the set, and lose interest by the time Lego can ramp up production. There's just less risk for Lego the way they do things now.

It's there for me (US)...what region are you in? https://www.lego.com/pick-and-build/pick-a-brick?query=6414961

The ship in that picture looks to be in irons (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/in_irons) -- you can tell because the main is sagging and not full as it is in the picture on the left. Or perhaps the person laying out the sets missed some details, look at the raft from 6273 :) Mistakes were common in a lot of the older promo pictures, sometimes minifigs have fallen over, dropped their accessories, etc. To me it adds a lot of charm to the older catalogues.

Lego Licensed Parts available from Bricks & Pieces
iragm replied to LegoPercyJ's topic in LEGO Licensed
Yeah this latest update is not great. I get the idea of the filter, but the buttons are far too large on desktop (on mobile it's actually done well and hidden behind a button, you can see it if you resize your browser on desktop...) Other sites have done the sidebar filter much better. The scrolling is especially awkward, it should scroll with the main page and not be in its own frame. And I wish the "pieces per page" defaulted to 400, there's no reason anyone would want less than that. And while I'm complaining, I wish I could middle click or control click on links to open them in a new tab -- I want to click on a brick and then open a new tab for "search results for same color". But overall having PAB has been bad for my wallet, so they are clearly doing something right. Edit: I reached out to a PAB developer on Reddit and they recommended giving feedback using the survey at the bottom of the page here: https://www.lego.com/en-us/pick-and-build If people actually fill this out, they may actually improve things. -
I have cleaned two sets of Black Pearl sails with no issue. Couple hours in Oxyclean and warm water, followed by ironing on low heat under a presscloth. Again, no problems at all. But to be honest, they didn't feel any different than the old school 90s sails to me, though, so I don't know if they were the new material or the old. I don't have 10210 to compare.

On Linux, I unzipped the archive and then: cd brickrail-linux/ chmod +x Brickrail.x86_64 ./Brickrail.x86_64 Worked fine.

That doesn't really mean much, though. Of course since the advent calendar is not in production, dark red epaulettes are also not in production. Neither are red or yellow epaulettes, but any of them could come back for this set.

Thank you for making this available on Linux -- works great. I think that long term, it might make sense to look into moving the project to the web, instead of a locally installed app (this would require Chrome, sadly), but it would allow Mac and mobile users to also use this. Pybricks on the web seems to work pretty well with BLE. About 75% of the traffic I see is from mobile, so it's a good idea to bring in these folks. Additionally, a web platform would allow you to collect analytics on how it's used by users, which makes development a lot easier. The documentation and videos are really nice. I hope this project takes off, as I've wanted to make something like this and haven't had time.

This looks incredibly cool.

I'm really surprised at the negative reviews here. It's the only set in this round of the BDP that I wanted and got -- I don't have much for trains at the moment, but I knew that if I didn't get it, I'd regret it, just like I regret not picking up a reissue Metroliner back in 2002. It looks great. The track offset and 8+ wide trains not being able to pass through it have been known issues since this was shown. I'm sure someone will figure out how to widen the station by ~6-8 studs, which should fix both issues. I still think it looks amazing. Haven't opened my copy, again, no space for trains at the moment. The missing bag reported above worries me. Has anyone built this and is happy with it?

Lego Licensed Parts available from Bricks & Pieces
iragm replied to LegoPercyJ's topic in LEGO Licensed
This is true, and it's worth pointing out that there's a Chrome extension called brickhunter that allows you to do price comparisons against BL on PAB, as well as purchase a wanted list from PAB (and export an updated xml to buy only the cheaper parts on BL). It's insanely useful, even if the learning curve is a bit steep. -
Thanks, I spent more hours that I would like to admit making the instructions for it. It really means a lot to me when people actually build it! I have been struggling to figure out why the prices are the way they are. I can't figure out if it's color related, batch size related, or inventory related. Some of their pricing is so strange - like the saddle is nearly as expensive as the bardings...???
-
The forestmen shields have been in stock pretty often over the last few months (except for December when nothing was getting restocked). There isn't any reason to rush on buying these parts, the castle is supposedly around until 2025, and PAB will keep getting restocked until then. I would recommend waiting for a really good GWP and buying then.

Here, a quick and easy way to see the good stuff: Vikings Animals Classic castle including 10305 minifigures Accessories Weapons Helmets

Same! Although I use classics smiles instead of flesh heads. I'm probably going to keep my vintage Lion Knights though, even if the new torsos become available on PAB. I have a lot of nostalgia for them. It's great to see that Lego support was lying when they said that parts exclusive to this set will not be available on PAB. The presence of the shield makes me sure that we'll see bardings, lion knights, flags, capes, etc., at some point. (Also plain ol' greed -- Lego sees the minifigs selling for $10 each on BL and wants a slice of that.)
