  1. 6. 8816 ATV Off Road Racer Remake Original set: 8816 Features: Steering with steering wheel (as in original set) Rear suspension on A-model (as in original set) Instructions for A & B models of the set Mostly the same parts between A/B/C models with less overhead of spare parts than in original set Using mostly modern/currently available Lego Technic elements, apart from round headlight tiles Discussion topic: Original set photo: My remake of the A-model: My remake of the B-model: Video: Additional notes: I picked this because I wanted to make a whole set with instructions for all models included in the package. This set was (at least for me) about introduction to advanced structural build techniques with Technic beams connected perpendicularly to beams stacked with additional plates. The remake is about some current building techniques with modern studless pieces. The C-model does not qualify for the contest entry as it is a motorisation mod of the B-model, only A & B models are part of this entry. The C-model is still included in the discussion topic and instructions as an interesting oddity.
  2. Awesome model - I feel like there are even some spots that are detailed better than in 42128. You could pick on some minor details, that's a C-model so it's understandable.

Looks great - two things I would change to be even more like the original - grey steering wheel and those vertical surfaces on the front spoiler should be made with those tiny curved panels that you've got 4 of them in red colour in the middle of the build. Apart from that - I'd like to see it with modern wheels :)

I like the model, but I feel like this is a shortcoming of the rules, that you could use all that defining elements from original set like wheels, excavator buckets and pneumatic (the currently available/newer ones are different, I think?) I'd love to see this set modernised, not just straight rebuilt with liftarms. Great job on it anyway and good luck!
  5. Looks really cool. There are some details thought that I would try making differently: The black roof at the back that is collapsed - you could try making it from black curved panels and figure out the body underneath. Right now it looks like some pipes and there are gaps. The windshield construction is really good, but there are attachment points at the sides - I would add mirror's to those attachment points. I think you should make the grill with Technic pieces. This is an important piece that is significant part of the car aesthetic
  6. It blows my mind that there's barely any system pieces in this small fighter and yet it looks so clean. Also good progress on the big boy :)
  7. You can use frictionless tan axle-pins to mount the front wheels if that's what you're worried about.
  8. Well, as a point #3, I'd say it's a more realistic representation of how this worked in real life vehicles. Also there's another type of differential steering, the double differential steering or subtractor steering that I've had video on previously, which is theoretically the best solution out of all three.
  9. Actually the two motors directly connected to track have issues on going straight line for heavier builds and at lower than max speed. Two motors don't have identical characteristic across whole output range.
  10. This is something I've built today after realising this could be used in a half-track: The braked differential steering is a steering system that was widely used in tanks. The idea is that we lock one output drive from differential and thus all power goes to the other side. In theory it is simple, but with no dedicated brakes in Lego Technic it gets complicated. It was often used with differential lock for driving straight though, which complicates such mechanism even more in Technic model. The drive input is in a poor position for the tank - I'll probably have to figure out how to connect the drive from the other side if I want to use it in a tank build, but it's not an easy task. It might be just in the right spot for the halftrack model though.

This model is awesome, but it's also a prime example of what you probably shouldn't have done for this contest: medium sized Technic model based off city scale system vehicle adding mechanical functionality where original set didn't really have that using system pieces for important features of the model's look, not only as some critical structural elements. And yeah, you're other model is looking really good, perfectly in the spirit of this contest :)
  12. Really cool little build. Do you plan on making some simple instructions for it or sharing the studio file? Also, as I needed to see it in yellow :) I rotated the red colour to yellow. Not perfect though.
  13. Just tested it with dry sand. The rubber bands are not strong enough to dig into the sand. Seems like I'll have to rethink the whole mechanism to be made with rigid levers. Thanks for noting this.

I checked that and back in 1994 when the set was released there were only 1 stud wide X486/X486a rubber tracks which look like something for small system tractors and dozers, but like you said, the 3873 Technic track link was already there. I don't know however whether at that time using of Technic tracks in system sets would be okay for Lego designers.
  15. I think it's either go fully for the panels and round shapes or stick to liftarms where the beams where in original. Also I feel like you've changed continuous line that was going from front wheel arch to the rear, that was angled, to a horizontal one, and it affected the original shape which was a bit more "wedgy".
  16. This is clearly representation of tracks from time when Lego didn't had tracks yet. I think it would make more sense to have tracks aligned like this, but the second row of wheels looks more like in the original.
  17. Looks really good, you just need to get rid of the studded pieces on the heli and handle the trailer colours according to the original set.
  18. I'm not going to comment on the original proportions, but the pivot on front axle will cause unnecessary trouble. Don't put that additional 1 stud long spacer between the steering arm and wheel, it doesn't make sense.
  19. It's about no studs, not no pins :) You might be confused since a lot of people start by rebuilding the original model first, that's for one. As for not using studs- small amount of those is allowed, but not as general use of construction techniques used like with Model Team approach where you mostly combine beams with system bricks. You're doing exactly what you're supposed to with your model, so don't worry.
  20. Now I'm more annoyed by the fact that those panels are so unique and don't connect well to other curved Technic panels. This is one of two issues I've got with the panels, the other ones is that there's no corner handling on them. Anyway while this is a lot better, why not leave it without this piece? The original model had the gap/open end there.
  21. The connection between the thin 20 tooth gear and 12 tooth gear like this is not a clean one and it will add some resistance to it once you pack it up with the structure that will keep the sides together.
  22. That's exactly what I'm working on right now by changing the priority between the functions: The issue is that the return isn't perfectly controllable, it all comes back together, not as I wanted the bucket to fold first and then the arm.
  23. Thanks! I've actually tinkered with the arm operation today to reverse the order in which bucket and the forearm? moved and it works, but it got really weak by hanging on single thin liftarm.
