LEGO Star Wars 2020 Set Discussion - READ FIRST POST!!!

It seems like the Shuttle thing was a lot less concrete than most other leaks (even instagram leakers were saying "the RUMOR is a Shuttle" as opposed to saying it's a shuttle) so I'm assuming that there was something that led people to believe it may have been a shuttle but ultimately it wasn't the case. Unless, of course, the $350 set is a Ponda Baba 1:1 scale bust -

Aha!! You’ve got no idea how happy this makes me. I thought this would be a cheap year for me (only was going to buy the AAT and Razor Crest) but looks like my budget just about tripled. -

I dunno, the one thing that I feel makes this more likely to get the Bad Batch in one or two sets as opposed to like four or five is that TV shows generally don't get big waves ever since Rebels. If it's a huge hit, I could see it getting a handful of sets, but I feel like it being an animated show means LEGO will proceed with caution and maybe just go with one or two sets to start, which would more than likely contain the full crew. -

It looks like it’s a new animated D+ show about the Bad Batch that’s been announced, not specifically any LEGO products, just for anyone confused like I was (unless I missed something at one of the usual leak spots). -

Oh snap! Better go buy up all the Angry Clone while I still can, it’s about to be a rare, valuable discontinued collectible In all seriousness though, that’s pretty cool, hopefully that trend continues. And in regards to the FO discussion, other than the Rogue Shadow, have we ever had any sets based on a non-movie/TV property put out at the same time as its release? I think every EU set besides TV shows and the Rogue Shadow have been way after the property was released. And like people have been saying, it makes sense that they’re moving with caution to push stuff based on new shows/games since it seems like they gambled hard on Rebels and it sort of didn’t work out for them. You can point to the fact that we’re getting more Mando stuff very quickly (Battle pack, Razor Crest, Brickheadz, and I think it’s probably a really safe bet that we’ll get something this winter), but Mandalorian has a WAY bigger fanbase than Fallen Order. Non-SW fans watch or talk about Mandalorian, they aren’t really doing that with FO. -
Maybe some kind of spinning platform or moveable platforms so that you can recreate a "duel" between them (even though in reality, it wasn't much of a duel)

Yeah, I think LEGO making those sets and nothing from Fallen Order is less of a "Hey those sets were terrible" and more "Why are we not getting something from a property that's probably more popular than those sources? I mean, with the Galaxy's Edge, it's at least topical right now (unfortunately I assume it was planned before everything got shut down, so it probably would've been put out right in August, in the height of theme-park season), 2002 Clone Wars has a bit of a cult following and it had a different Ventress figure which was nice, but yeah I have no idea how they made stuff like the Sandspeeder or TIE Crawler (granted that was 13 years ago) but not Fallen Order. The Sandspeeder was great, but yeah, I'd bet a sizable amount that 99% of people had never, ever seen that before the LEGO toy came out. -

I interpreted it as saying that even if they have preliminary images of a character, if it's a CGI or motion capture character, the production team tends to do more tweaking to those at the last minute, whereas they can't really do that as easily if it's an actual human in costume, so they air on the side of caution and wait to see the final product with those types of characters. At least, that's what I got out of it. -
Love the idea of a remake wave, I'll give it a shot. Trying to avoid sets that are constant remakes, so even though a Slave I or whatever is technically a remake, I'll go for sets that we've only had a couple of or haven't had in a really long time. I guess no microfighters since they have only been a thing for ~5 years or so and we're still missing some major vehicles. Battle Packs: Rebel Scout Speeder - 3x Rebel Troopers, 1x Rebel Commander (similar to Captain Antillies), build is a speeder with detachable turret. $14.99 Endor Rebel Trooper & Scout Trooper Battle Pack - 2x Rebel Troopers (one based on old Captain Rex), 2x Scout Troopers, small tree build, and a speeder bike. $14.99 Small sets: Cloud Car - Includes Lobot and Cloud Car pilot minifigures. The center section opens up for weapons storage. $29.99 Jedi Defense - Reimagining those two small sets into a more modern locations/battle scene set. Would have a sliding blast door, control room, and a hallway with some sort of exploding feature. Minifigures are Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, 2x security battle droids, 2x droidekas, and Nute Gunray. $34.99 Wampa Cave - Includes 2x Tauntauns, a Wampa and cave build, a probe droid, and some other sort of scenery builds. Minifigures are Luke Skywalker (Hoth) and Han Solo (Hoth). $34.99 Medium sets: Endor Bunker - Just the bunker and a small catapult/tree build, nothing too large. Probably an exploding wall feature on the bunker and maybe a satellite dish on the top that you can make "explode" with a lever. Includes Han Solo (Endor), Princess Leia (Endor), Scout Trooper, Stormtrooper, and an Ewok. $49.99 Wookiee Catamaran - Includes 2x Wookiee Warrior, Tarfull, 2x battle droids, a crab droid, and a Kashyyk clone. Maybe Luminara Unduli if they really want to be faithful to the original. $69.99 Large sets: Jango Fett's Slave I - Includes Jango Fett (with hair piece and helmet), young Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi (with hood and hair piece), Lama Su, Taun We, and R4. $89.99 X-Wing Fighter (based on the Dagobah version) - Includes the ship, clip-on moss pieces, and a small build to represent either Yoda's Hut, or the cave with the Darth Vader vision. Minifigures are Luke Skywalker (Dagobah training outfit and pilot uniform), R2-D2 (muddy), and Yoda. Home One Cruiser - Includes Mon Mothma, General Madine, A-Wing pilot, Rebel Mechanic, Lando Calrissian (ROTJ), Luke Skywalker (ROTJ), Admiral Ackbar, Mon Calamari officer, and a Rebel trooper. Basically the same sort of idea as the last one, has a briefing area, control room with the various chairs for Ackbar and the other officers, a hangar bay with A-Wing, and maybe some sort of medical area. $149.99

Man, for some of us that've been buying these for 13 years now, $15 is high compared to the original $9.99 and then $11.99/12.99 that these were for a while. I think the $30 concept is cool in terms of better playability, more figures, that sort of thing, but this would probably eliminate the more character driven battle packs (like Tattooine or Bounty Hunters) since I feel like it's harder to shoehorn those types of characters into a mid-sized set as opposed to throwing in a random speeder that doesn't actually exist just so that you can justify a $15 price point for Bossk, IG-88, 4-LOM and Dengar. I suppose you could make it work with things like the Jedi and Clones battle pack, but ones that are straight up character packs I think wouldn't be as doable. -

My theory is that its twofold. They could've very easily given a $15 battle pack with 3 regular 501st clones and a jet trooper with a smaller (and more correctly scaled) AT-RT or BARC speeder, but they knew the demand would be high, so they jacked up the price to $30, and this way they didn't have to expand the wave to have a second battle pack, since I don't believe we've ever gotten a single battle pack released in a wave, I think they're always paired. There also may be a lesser element of trying to detract future campaigns by not outright releasing a 501st battle pack set. I mean, for all intents and purposes, this may as well be one, but this way they technically didn't cave to fan pressure. -

Also, sets like Geonosis Troopers or Utapau Troopers were very clearly one legion of clones (I know the Geonosis one was disliked by some but the point stands) even if they weren’t 4 identical figures. Despite the fact that we got both airborne and ground variations of clones, you can’t tell me that the Utapau one wasn’t a 212th Battle Pack. -
I thought about putting Elis Helrot in there, probably my favorite obscure cantina alien, but I dunno if he's as well known/fan favorite-y to warrant a figure, since I don't even know if he's ever actually in any of the shots of the movie. The ARC Troopers one is a good idea, especially since you could technically still army build with it, just mix and match some of the gear and if they have their helmets on, you can't tell from the faces. The Jabba's Henchmen idea is great too, I think a mini-skiff build would be perfect (sort of like the one from 1999 or whenever).

Yeah the Cantina being MBS/UCS was probably wishful thinking on my part, I was just thinking since we hadn't heard any noise about the d2c lately and it's getting to within a month or so of when we'd probably start to get actual details on it. I can dream... Guess we'll just have to wait (and I agree it's really confusing about whether or not the $40 set that probably has something to do with Bespin is the same as the other set that was going to be a Celebration exclusive). Hopefully everything will become clear soon! Also, I don't remember any year with this many unexpected sets that seem to keep popping up out of nowhere. We had the Razor Crest, The Child sculpture, IT-S, the convention set/$40 thing, assuming those are the same thing, and possibly something in reference to the Cantina too. You could even throw in the 501st set since we initially thought that was just some sort of BARC and yet LEGO revealed it four months early. -
Okay, so at this point it's more speculation than anything, but if there was a UCS Cantina priced at $350, similar to Cloud City, here's how I'd do it: Dollhouse style build with a roof and 4 walls, but it's hinged at the back and opens down the middle with the bar being split in half as it opens. One of the two front sections would have the entrance enclave thingy with droid detector, maybe throw some antennae or moisture vaporators onto the back just for detail. Each half would have 4 booths along the side and one in the back corner (far end from the door), except a booth on one side would be replaced with the band stage. I can't really think of any play features besides the "Han shoots Greedo" that's appeared in some format in all 3 previous cantinas we've gotten. The best part of this set, in my opinion, would be the figures. Cloud City came with 21 figures (counting the Han Carbonite piece, R2-D2, and IG-88 as figures), so I think 24 is a reasonable number for a $350 cantina, mostly because this set would be heavily minifigure-driven (unlike most UCS/MBS sets). If I was picking the lineup, I'd put Han Solo, Chewbacca, Greedo, Tatooine Luke, Ben Kenobi, Wuher, 5x Modal Nodes, Muftak (use the Talz mold without the head plume from the Freeco Speeder set), Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead, already have the Ithorian mold from a previous set), Dr. Evazan (no new mold), Ponda Baba (would require a new mold), 1x Sandtrooper captain, 2x Sandtrooper, Snaggletooth (may or may not need a new mold), Tonnika Sisters (no new mold), Kabe (could use the Batman/Monster Fighters bat ear mold to avoid the need for a new mold, even if it's not 100% accurate), Dannik Jerko (no new mold), Djas Puhr (no new mold, but may require a new color for his head), and I'd go with either Garindan (would require a new mold, not technically Cantina related but probably the only chance to ever get this figure) or one of the Duros aliens (no new mold required). BoShek would also be cool and doesn't need any new molds, but I can't decide if I'd kick anyone out for him. Since the MBS/UCS playsets typically come with vehicles, I'd also include the white landspeeder you can see crossing the street in Mos Eisley when Ben/Luke are stopped by stormtroopers and a Dewback.

I'm a little bit confused still about the celebration thing vs. the $40 set, because it seems like they may or may not be the same thing, I guess it's best to wait and see. I guess it's been, what 3 years since we had a Cantina? And the last one was a retail exclusive too, but the thing that seems odd is if there is something here pertaining to a cantina, we already knew of the other two retail exclusives in system scale, so I feel like a third one would've come out with them. -

Please forgive me for speculating, but if that quote is in reference to a particular scene, and we don't know for sure what the d2c is other than it's priced at $350... I know for a fact I'd be first in line to preorder that if this means what I think it might. Anyway, mosaics - I think this line has a lot of potential and the response seems to be generally positive towards both the Star Wars one and the other ones as well. Pretty genius on LEGO's part to entice you to buy multiples, especially for this one and the Beatles one (I mean, people are going to want to display all four Beatles for sure, and the 3-part Vader mosaic looks amazing). I would bet if this sells well, another great 3-in-1 that we'd probably see eventually is a Clone/Stormtrooper/FO Stormtrooper, since it's literally the same colors. I could see them maybe figuring out a way to do R2-D2, C-3PO and BB-8 in the same mural, too. It'd be tough since there's not a lot of overlap in terms of colors, but they managed to do it pretty well for this one even though Maul has way more red than Vader or Kylo. -

It's possible that the person had information, but the figures in this wave were also pretty guess-able. The only sets that we weren't certain of the figures for at that point were Anakin's fighter (very, very easy to deduce who was coming with it), the AAT, and Greivous' ship (and we already knew for a fact it had 3 figures and that the third was a clone that wasn't Cody, so people had already correctly speculated it could be an Airborne trooper). Even the Ahsoka trooper, while a bit unexpected, wasn't too difficult to just correctly guess, since it doesn't need any new molds and is relevant right now. It also begs the question, why not come out with this information way earlier when we had almost zero info to go on about the minifigures or whatever that were included? I don't think any of the Toy Fairs that did happen this year actually had SW stuff on display, otherwise we would've had way more information earlier on in the year, so I'm also a bit confused. Anyway, about the mosaics - it looks pretty fantastic, I won't be buying it just because I'm budgeting my LEGO spending for the year (AAT and Razor Crest is probably going to be it for me) but definitely a well-designed piece that I'm sure would be great on display. -
Oh yeah, I may have worded that poorly, I just meant that a Ghost about the size of the system-scale Falcons would be doable, even though it's technically a larger ship relative to the Millenium Falcon. A UCS Ghost would be awesome, albeit never happening, especially since I think one in scale with the $800 Falcon would be north of $1,000. Plus, for as big of a ship as it is, most of the interior is confined to just the cockpit, gunner seats, and cabins, and I think that one little lounge area. The rest is pretty much empty cargo bays and stuff, so I think making it too big would just waste space.
-
If/when we ever see a re-release, I really hope it's more akin to the Falcon playsets as opposed to the previous release of The Ghost where there wasn't really any interior besides the guns and cockpit. Technically scale-wise, a system-scale Ghost would probably be closer to $300 (keeping it about the same scale as the $150 Falcons that we get), but I think for $160 you could probably fit the cockpit, front guns, a cargo area behind the front ramp, and then maybe two small cabins on the upper level.
-
True, hopefully we just get something else from Rogue One, I'm still missing way too many important characters. And I agree, I think if we ever do get significant animated waves it'll be Clone Wars only or if there's ever another show that has the same reaction TCW had. My guess is that the rumors around Rebels sets not selling too well might be true and that LEGO's new approach to Star Wars TV shows is to do maybe one or two sets at the launch of the show, and then wait and see how it does. I could definitely see more Mando sets too (I'm blanking on the third new one, we have the Child sculpture, Razor Crest, and what else?). Gideon's TIE seems way too conducive to not be made into a set, I could see a New Republic X-Wing in the next year or so since they usually like to have an X-Wing on the shelves, but could be a nice variation away from either a Red Squadron or Resistance X-Wing, and maybe some sort of location based set of Arvala-7 as a way to get Kuilil. I'd also say that we're probably guaranteed to get at least one set from Mando S2 in the winter wave, given how in-demand both the Mandalorian Battle Pack and AT-ST were (and, while the AT-ST is a great set, I'd bet a lot of people were literally just buying it for Mando/Cara Dune since it's not a new vehicle or anything).
-
I would say that if we don't get anything Solo or Rogue One in the next 2-3 years, it's unlikely that we'll see much more ever from it. This is the first opportunity with no real new properties to make sets of (the Cassian show in 2021 might get a set or two but I feel like they're done doing major waves based on TV shows, since both Resistance didn't and The Mandalorian only got one set with another after they realized how popular it was). I can understand why Solo/Rogue One didn't get much in 2018-2020, since they had TLJ and TROS, plus their anniversary wave to do, but now is the perfect opportunity with nothing new coming out to revisit some of those movies.

Yeah I have a feeling that the Snow Gonk will be exclusive. This is complete conjecture, but I feel like the codes from the other sets will be the same across the board, since it's just early unlock, whereas the Advent Calendar codes will be unique (since it looks to be a different style) and each one is only usable once. At least, that's probably what I'd think they would do in order to assure people have to buy the set. -
For whatever reason, I feel like the toys from the anthology films just didn't sell that well. I can go to a store that sells SW action figures right now and there's a greater than 50% chance that I'll be able to find either a Cassian or Jyn action figure from 2016, and a ton of places near me still have SW toys with the Solo box art (I don't really collect much SW stuff beyond LEGO and the occasional action figure, so I'm not totally sure what products they are). It's confusing to me, because I feel like people generally seemed to like them, especially Rogue One, but maybe the movies had less of a casual appeal and also no token toy selling character (BB-8, Porg, D-0) that people, especially kids, had to have. I don't remember the Lego sets hanging around much more than normal Star Wars sets, and they don't publicly show which sets sell better than others, so we have no way of knowing how Lego sold relative to the other toys, but I'm worried that we might not get much from the anthology films as a result. Same with Rebels, since some people on this board with insider knowledge have implied that those sets really didn't sell very well, and Rebels doesn't have the same following that Clone Wars has, I'm worried that we may end up not getting more from it. The TCW Dooku (I think it only had like one or two sets around 2009-2011ish) also had a different hilt mold, I believe one the one that they used for Asajj Ventress too, it was just a normal light gray color without any chrome/brushed chrome. The 2013 Dooku, by the way, is probably one of the most accurate SW figures they've ever made. They absolutely nailed the face printing on it and the hair works perfectly for Dooku.

I for one am certainly excited to see what we get. Other than S2 of Mandalorian (which I think at this point is almost assuredly to have a set based on it, since S1 was such a hit, they'll definitely end up cooking up something for the January wave in order to avoid what happened last year and only having one set that, in all honesty, wasn't that important of a scene/vehicle), we don't have any new stuff that will take up a lot of the winter wave, since I think the Cassian show is scheduled for spring of 2021 if I'm not mistaken. I feel like we might get another few waves of very diverse stuff (sort of like the waves we got between 2006-2008, when it was a mix of all different movies + even the EU). At least, that's my hope! Good to know, thanks for the clarification!
