[MOC] MK V Tank
Stimy replied to Stimy's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The exterior is nearly complete, I'm still waiting on some parts that have not been delivered yet. the body feels very strong and only 2 parts still remain to be modified but at the moment I can't really find a solution to this. The drive system is nearly ready (once again thanks to Tommy Styrvoky) I think that the parts will arrive next week and i'll be ready to do a first test with this. afterwards I'll be ordering the Sbricks and the full incorporation will start. I expect this build to be completed by the end of the year. Once again I really would like the thank all the people that have helped me with my first MOC, I didn't imagine that I would get such a big support!! -

damn what a build!!! I really like the way you are building it, keep up the good work and make sure those workers don't go on a strike- 74 replies

[MOC] MK V Tank
Stimy replied to Stimy's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
We've built some more and so far, so good. I strengthened the hulls some more and at the moment these are very sturdy, only the front piece is a bit flimsy where the red goes to white, but i'm awaiting pieces to remodel this. The sponson sides is also something that i'm not so happy with, it looks ok but it is not strong so that needs to be remoddeled also. bit by bit, we're getting there. -

Hey johnny, thanks for the comment. The hulls consist of 2 parts, connected in the middle. At the moment I used a modified SNOT technique to get these 2 parts connected, so far it is keeping together but you can indeed see some gaps at some places. It will get stronger once the inside hull is fully built and connected. below is a picture where you can see where the 2 parts come together. I use 100% lego parts but some tan parts have some age and are not 100% straight anymore, I'll fix that in tha days/weeks to come. -

indeed, the front is not completely joined together, still waiting on 2 parts for this, or do you see other parts? -

After a lot of bricklink orders I got almost all the pieces I need. I've started building the first half of the hulls, so far it's all going together as planned but I did have to use some SNOT techniques to get the both halves to connect. some parts are still missing to complete the hull but they are on the way. I've also tried to get the drive system to work but this will need some redesigning, at the moment I can't get the clutch-steer system working as I would like. -

small image of the finished exterior. Now working on the drive system, sadly my experience and knowledge of mechanical engineering is not that high so Tommy helped me out with a basic clutch drive system. I am now changing it so it can be used in the tank -

just made 7 orders for the parts, still missing a couple of parts but will order these once I found them at better prices. Finally I can start building -

I got a lot further with the MK V, the body is finished and connected with both hulls. the exterior is nearly done except for the unditching rails and beam. Now I am going to work out the drive-system for this thing, I need to do some research about what to use. at least I can start ordering parts to start building the body. -

Thanks Tommy, this fixed it!! -

Hey Tommy, thanks for the bracing tip, already incorporated it. The headlight brick is indeed the solution for this, but getting this incorporated into the design is gonna be a pain in the a**. tried several things but can't seem to get it incorporated without having to tear apart the hulls. -

Hey Phoenix, This is a good idea, but i'll have to see if this doesn't obstruct the turret movement. the gaps that I meant were in the sponson design itself, because I am using the slopes on a 45° angle, this makes that there is a small gap between the slopes & the side of the sponson. -

Bot hulls are ready together with the sponsons and canons. the controls for the turrets are in and they should work (fingers crossed). I also started adding the tracks, but at the moment they do not connect in LDD, we'll see how it goes when I start building this beast. Now I'll focus on the body & drive system of this thing, I was thinking about using a Buwizz system in this so I can control it with a smartphone or tablet, any of you got experience with this. I also see a lot about the Sbrick system but I can't really understand what it does (besides being able to program stuff into it) any of you got some more simple description for how they work? I've already made a big order for tan parts via Bricklink (thanks for the tip) but at the moment i'm already up to 1650 parts as it is now so will have to do a lot more ordering -

Stimy replied to supertruper1988's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I must say that I'm now building a Lego MK V* tank, and i started loosely on the images of Sariel's version of this (no LDD provided) In the beginning I was a bit ashamed because Pawel put all the hard work in making the thing and now I was just gonna copy it. However after 1-2 weeks into it I decided to change some things that I think are better and eventually got to a point where I am now completely changing the whole model. Sometimes it's good to have the first step of the stairs so that you can climb up further? -

Finally had some time to work on the tank again. I've been struggling to get the elevation mechanism to work, the traverse unit works perfectly thanks to Tommy's plans, the elevation system is a whole other story. after trying out 4-5 different ideas, I've put it aside for now and gone with a basic system that uses a string and winch. For now I'm happy with the result and maybe i'll find a new way to get this thing to work in the future https://bricksafe.com/files/stimy/mk-v-tank/MK V Canon.lxf As for the tank itself, I needed to modify the sponson design beacause the new canon design didn't fit in the old sponson and some parts exst in LDD but not from Lego. For now I'm happy with how it looks, altough there is a small gap in between te front side & middle part of the sponson, can't have it all https://bricksafe.com/files/stimy/mk-v-tank/MK V sponson2.lxf Next up will be creating the body and connecting the hulls together, then it's on with designing the drive system and interior if possible. -

thanks for the suggestions phoenix, at the moment it looks like it's holding together, I've also made strengthening parts in between the hulls to keep it all together. about the side pieces in tan, this will be difficult as there are no pieces small enough to span the edge and not be too thick. I'm still busy incorporating the drive system of the sponson canon, the rotation is working as far as I can see in LDD (I don't think there is an option to virtually power a motor in the LDD design?) I am now working on getting the servo motor connected for the elevation, due to the lack of workspace this is not an easy job. We'll get there ventually, I'm in no rush to get this model finished.
