  1. I found translations of all the printed tiles on New Elementary, but does anyone know what the textile banners along the front wall of 80107 say?
  2. Yeah, my first thought was the giant donuts sold in the Springfield area of Universal Studios!
  3. I voted for the mayor from Jaws, seemed like an appropriate pick.
  4. I really like the new dog! I could see it recolored for a Dalmatian as well.
  5. Well, I'm not sure if "AD" is a typo for "AS" or "DD," but Assembly Square was revealed in mid-October and Downtown Diner late November (post-Thanksgiving weekend). The past couple years we've gotten used to very last-minute reveals, but it feels like not that long ago that there would be people panicking like "omg it's already the second week of November and no news about the new modular, what if there isn't going to be one?!"
  6. I know Lucarex and I have both (jokingly... ish) suggested the theme be rebranded as LEGO® Tourist Attractions™, but it's really starting to seem plausible it could move in that direction. Granted it would need a more diplomatic title like "Landmark Collection" that could stand alongside things like the forthcoming "Botanical Collection," but such a rebranding would give even more leeway for decidedly non-architectural models, and seems increasingly likely in the context of the other 18+ sets we've seen over the past year. When Architecture first launched, it was really the only adult-oriented theme consisting of small sets that could be easily displayed on a desk or bookshelf - something that could signal to coworkers and visitors that "Yes, I build some LEGO sets sometimes, but in a mature, sophisticated way that does not interfere with my mortgage payments and TPS reports." Now, though, the increased focus on adults (not AFOLs, actual adults) has seen this approach expanded to a broader variety of subject matter. So the time might really be right for a rebranding. Anyone actually interested in architecture has probably given up by now, but there's plenty of untapped potential among the casual consumers out there asking why this theme hasn't done a Grand Canyon set. (Seriously, that's a thing a customer suggested to me.)
  7. Right - proving that the connection points are a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition. Maybe we can exclude those two by just saying white lampposts are a necessary condition as well?
  8. Another crucial element is that each building itself is a module of a larger neighborhood/block - they all have Technic pin connections at the same points on each baseplate so that they can be linked together in any order. Those connections are considered a necessary condition.
  9. The 3D tiles in the Extra Dots Series 3 (and Starlight Bracelets) are super intriguing! I wonder what other shapes we might see with this technique. I do hope they'll continue to make 2-wide bracelets as well; the 1-wide ones are cool too but I wouldn't want them to be the only option going forward.
  10. The whole "YouTube tags" line of reasoning doesn't strike me as all that definitive, if only because the Black Friday Showcase is not just a 2021 set reveal, it's also a "look back at the best LEGO sets of 2020." The tags ("lego modular build," "lego police station") could just as easily be referring to that aspect of the video.
  11. I promise I am well aware that people sometimes lie on the internet. We all have our preferred strategies for assessing rumors. Some like to use game theory and Bayesian inference to test claims, some just like to be hostile and condescending. I'm not trying to force my methodology on anyone else here, just accept the fact that what I'm doing works for me and move along.
  12. Think this through. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that if they are lying, they are pretty unlikely to pay up. This is not a matter of seeking personal gain for myself. The point is, I'm introducing a proposition by which theremin would have something to gain, with essentially no risk, if they are telling the truth. They would have no reason not to accept the bet because they would be guaranteed to win. But they didn't, which tells me all I need to know. It's actually a pretty consistently effective approach when you want to test someone's confidence in their assertions.
  13. If anything, I'm wondering if the Architecture line (which Jamie had been managing the past few years) has finally breathed its last wheezing gasp, freeing him up to go back to modular buildings. But again, I'm not believing a shred of what @theremin says until they're willing to bet on it.
  14. Good rule of thumb for determining how reliable someone's information is (or how confident they are in it): see how much they're willing to wager on it. So: if you're right, I'll buy you a copy of the new modular. If you're wrong, you buy me one. Deal?
  15. I really like the color scheme of the movie theater - I wonder if the red and azure combo is a deliberate reference to 3D glasses, because that was definitely my first thought. Andrea's house is really cool too, possibly my favorite of all the family house sets this theme has done. Are those rounded window frames new or did I miss them in an earlier set?
  16. I'm not generally into City, but - wow. This is a really solid lineup. Probably will get the skatepark (I still prefer the Friends one from a few years back, but this can add onto it nicely), and maybe the Modern Family House (or at the very least get the new dog from B&P). And glow-in-the-dark 1x2 plates! I'll be loading up on those.
  17. As much as I like Creator 3-in-1 sets, I never thought I'd find myself wanting one for the minifig, but here we are.
  18. 80107 Spring Lantern Festival features a 1x1 round tile with tang yuan print: This one almost slipped past me, because at first I thought it was reused from 80101 Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner. But that was just me misremembering - the original was a 2x2. This set also features a little NPU with the posing bar from the DC CMF as a straw - the build contains exactly zero new elements, but I thought it was pretty clever:
  19. Looking through all the previous Ideas sets (as well as the ones we know are coming), I can lump them into four distinct categories: Science (mostly space exploration, but with some paleontology and ornithology thrown in as well), Pop Culture (mostly of a nostalgic bent, but with some more current stuff as well), Objects like the Maze and Pop-Up Book, and what I would call Neo-Classic (sets that broadly fit into classic LEGO themes, but with a much more advanced level of detail - I see the Treehouse and Old Fishing Store as belonging to this category, along with the more obvious ones like the Exo Suit, Pirates of Barracuda Bay, and forthcoming Medieval Blacksmith). The Caterham is the only outlier in this taxonomy, so it's difficult to gauge how another car model might fare in review. Incidentally, I'm curious if others have similar mental categories for LEGO Ideas sets, or other patterns you see.
  20. As someone who is allergic to most flowers and hilariously incapable of keeping houseplants alive, I would much prefer the LEGO models.
  21. It varies, especially depending on whether they have two floors or three, but the ground floor is usually a few bricks taller than the upper floors. A fairly typical elevation would probably be around ten bricks tall for the first (ground) floor, and seven or eight for each upper floor.
  22. I really like the Spring Lantern Festival! Probably can't afford to get both that and next year's modular, but it'll be at the top of my list if the modular doesn't strike my fancy. I think it's also interesting that this line has become a reliable supplier of banana recolors - I always love seeing parts once considered "single purpose" reused as decorative and shaping elements.
  23. Eurobricks is not representative of the LEGO-buying public as a whole. Seems pretty silly and shortsighted to say a set is "doomed" based on how much discussion is or isn't happening in any given echo chamber.
  24. Eh, that's pretty much what happens every year. Other sets are in retailer catalogues; the modular isn't. I do like the varied architectural styles, but I find the color scheme is often the part I'm most curious about. If there's ever a purple modular, I'll probably get it no matter what it actually is (unless it's a police station).
  25. I would like to see a menorah element - or really, literally anything at all related to Hanukkah.
