Are Star Wars MOC Builders becoming a dying breed?
Lobot replied to HJR-Holland's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I totally agree Anio! It's been a shame that some MOCs haven't received the credit that they deserve, beacuse of less than ideal photography. A decent camera can make a modest MOC look far better than it actually was & I speak from experience. Have a look at the link below; to be honest my attempt at building was feeble, but with a reasonable DSLR and eveything left on 'auto' it actually looked quite good! http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream I haven't deeplinked it, as it's a large photo! Cheers, Robin -
Thanks for the comments everyone! It got a bit complicated towards the end as Lego actually gave me approx £9 of parts free of charge, as they had been out of stock for a long time, but if my maths is any good the total cost for the Falcon is £587.17 (including postage). I also added Chewie & Han to a couple of larger orders and the cost of them excluding postage was £6.66, so if you include them it's £593.83. Update: I'm getting there, I finished the top plates for the mandibles, added the docking rings, cockpit and the front sloping part. I've just heard from Lego & they shipped the last missing parts a couple of days ago so they should be here soon....if they don't arrive by the weekend I'll probably 'borrow' them from my other set just so that I can finish it. Page 226 and It's looking more like the Falcon: Lobot peers down into one of the exposed mandible sections, I love the way they're recessed into the frame. The front sloping sections is missing a couple of hoses. The docking rings finally installed: I do realise that I've probably gone on about these a bit too much, but they're just sooo beautiful  I'm not too sure how they would work in reality all those l-shaped taps and bars would make it very difficult to align it all.... in fact I don't recall seeing the Falcon docked via them in any of the films! Cheers, Robin

Update: More progress today, it's starting to look a lot more finished. I've now added both mandibles which makes it rather difficult to photograph as it's getting a bit too big! Page 160: Most of the underside completed including the exposed sections of the mandible 'inlets' and the landing ramp. Lobot has stepped in to oversee the whole project as it's now way over schedule. There are lots of small details which show the dedication that the designer (Jens Kronvold Frederiksen) had. In particular, the hydraulic rams are just beautiful, but perhaps I'm biased from my OT leaning as so many classic scenes seem to have occurred around them! Han & Chewis arriving at Cloud City (well almost): Now if only I had the talent to build the Bespin landing platform....if only it wasn't round Page 177: All of the underside is now completed, and the turrets are almost finished (just missing the little left triangle parts which are en-route from Lego). It's amazing how many parts go into the two sections, they're almost identical but not quite, and they slot together perfectly. Han oversees the installation of the top turret: 'This one goes here, that one goes there!' Cheers, Robin

Impressive, most impressive!! The sheer scale of this thing is amazing, but you've also added some really nice details and it looks very accurate. Are you going to add some Technic LEDs to it? You might need to use clusters of 4 for the main lights to do it justice as they're pretty feeble individually! Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to seeing this finished.
-
Update: A bit more progress yesterday as follows: Page 75, frame completed and legs added: Sorry I lied, it's yet another photo of the legs, but now they're finally finished!! I don't know if it's intentional but the legs act like suspension as they have a small amount of flex in them, so the model can absorb small impacts without any problems. The pairs of rear legs are really close together, it looks a bit odd, or maybe it's just me Page 107, engine section and one of the mandibles completed: it starts to get really big at this point. The design is genius, it's a work of art... all that Technic goodness Han and Chewie looking happy, all they need now is the loading ramp! Doc: The dark red panel doesn't do much and could easily be replaced with smaller parts but it might need a little re-enforcement. It isn't that obvious and, unless you want to spend hours looking at the underside of it, it's probably easier to use a standard grey one. Cheers, Robin

The main Lego website now offers a service to buy parts (rather than replacements!), link to the UK version: (click here). In the second screen select the 'I want to buy a piece' The prices are a lot cheaper for several of the rarer/expensive parts & they only charged me £2 postage! Update: A couple hours building last night and it's taking shape nicely: Page 48 & the frame's finished: It's incredibly strong & nice to build, I just love the mix of colours. The red & yellow technic parts make such a nice change from the default SW grey! Page 61 and the bottom section is finished: This is where the expensive red plate goes (I paid a lot for mine from Bricklink, but it was cheaper direct from Lego, doh!). Han overseeing the construction: More updates to follow. Cheers, Robin

Are Star Wars MOC Builders becoming a dying breed?
Lobot replied to HJR-Holland's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I have a fairly decent collection, but it's all safely kept in its own boxes away from the risks of sunlight or dust, so when I build something myself I normally hit Bricklink for parts, which can be an expensive way of doing things! I've tried to use LDD, but I find it too frustrating (and I already spend 8 hours a day looking at a PC screen for work, so it isn't that appealing). There are many amazing builders on the net (cavegod, Anio, Brickplumber, marshal banana etc etc) it's just best to leave it to them! Also my standards are far higher than my ability; i.e. I know what I want my builds it to look like, but I find it impossible to acheive it. I've spent several years debating building a large Cloud City, but it's driven me nuts each time I tried!! Bricklinking sets though is fun, it's more of a challenge to me than building a conventional set, and it's a good way of keeping the grey cells ticking over. -
Well, after a little wait the main batch of parts from Lego arrived today! I've still got a few missing, which are en-route, but I think I'll 'borrow' them from my other Falcon if they're needed before they arrive....building to commence very shortly And what does £113 worth of Lego look like, well this: Cheers, Robin

You can create links to the photos before they've been moderated by Brickshelf, so you don't have to wait Nice review & photos by the way!

Hi, it's really easy to link the photos from Brickshelf, but first you need to re-size them!! i) Firstly open the photo using MS Paint: ii) Next select the 'Resize' option from the toolbar iii) A new screen will appear, click on the 'Pixels' radio button and reduce the horizontal to '640' - the 'Vertical' will automatically update to '436' iv) Save the photo as a JPEG (.jpg) using the 'Save As' option and then upload to Brickshelf. Next to link it to Eurobricks: i) Firstly click on the photo you want to link ii) When it appears as a larger image click on it again (it will then open again in the same window, but all of the adverts etc will be missing!) iii) Next copy the website address from the toolbar iv) Next open your post in Eurobricks and select the 'screen' icon (the one with the tree!) v) Paste the address into the 'URL' box and click 'OK' The photo should then magically appear! Cheers, Robin

Welcome to Ameribricks.com - Major Changes Coming!

I'm amazed at some of the posts... surely this your hobby (and supposed to fun?) I think that some members need to take anything said in this thread more in the spirit of things! I'm British & I've always been totally happy to make light of my own little, cold, damp, miserable country who's had delusions of grandure for far too long!! I'll admit that I was (briefly) taken in, as it was done very well, but I then remembered the date! Well done to everyone who organised this! Anyway, if it's true it can't all be bad....after all the US gave us The Big Bang Theory & Friends!! -
There's normally a small number of SW sets on sale between 10-20% off on the 4th and if you spend £50 they include free shipping and a gift (usually a exclusive minifigure - last year it was a TC-14). In previous years the £50 had to be spent on SW, but last year any purchase(s) totalling above £50 entitled you to free shipping & the minifigure.

Well I'm totally underwhelmed by Han....it's the worst version of him I've seen! I remember him as the original Kenner figure (my first one at the age of about 7!) and he had a dark BLUE jacket. Ah well, at least I won't have to spend £50 on May 4th unless there's some nice discounts. I'm (still) hoping that 7879 will be included in the sale; I refuse to buy it at full RRP but it would be nice to have K-3PO etc.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Update: I called Lego to check on the progress of my order. Unfortunately, two of the part types are still out of stock but they've very kindly offered to send me everything else straight away, and they'll then ship the remaining parts seperately & free of charge!! I love Lego's Customer Service, they're so nice to deal with! I also took pity on Chewie last week and ordered a Han to keep him company. The reunion was quite touching really : Han: "Chewie......!" Chewie: "Arrrgghhhhhhhhhhgghhhhgghghghghhhhhhh!" Cheers, Robin

If it's printed in A4, you might as well just view it from a laptop & save yourself the money! When I bricklinked the 10143 Death Star II I used my little 11" notebook & it wasn't too difficult.... I know the Falcon's a larger build but the .pdf quality is very good & you can always increase the zoom level if you need to for the odd bit here & there. I'll admit I'm using the official manual for my Bricklinked Falcon, but I'd cope without one if I didn't have it.

UCS 10221 Mod Episode II: The Modder Strikes Bottom
Lobot replied to mortesv's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Hi Jamil Yes, sorry I should have mentioned that LBG = Medium Stone Grey! Bricklink is generally better value that PAB & it does have a better selection of parts, but sometimes PAB is cheaper....it just depends what you're after. Also if you buy from Lego you're guaranteed to get new & shiny parts & their delivery times are very fast. For example I recently ordered 500+ parts on a Friday evening & it arrived the following Wednesday, even though it was via their 'Standard' shipping option. I don't know if you've found it but Bricklink has an inventory of most sets, which includes the colours & parts numbers, which might be of use to you. Here's the one for the SSD (link here) Cheers, Robin -
UCS 10221 Mod Episode II: The Modder Strikes Bottom
Lobot replied to mortesv's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Hi Jamil & welcome to Eurobricks! Firstly, I'd recommend Bricklink (link here) or Lego's PAB (link here) if you're looking to buy more than a handful of parts. Lego's PAB is generally more expensive but they have fixed shipping charges which can be very helpful! 'Light Grey' is the older version and 'Light-Bluish Grey' (or LBG) is the newer colour - this is used in all current sets including the SSD! It's the same with the darker grey: 'Old grey' = older version whilst 'Dark-Bluish Grey' is the new (and current) colour also used in the SSD. I hope that this helps. Cheers, Robin -
Update: I've managed to spend a couple more hours today working on some new sections, results below. Firstly, I've completed one of the rear top panels (top-left), docking ring top cover (middle-top), and the last mandible cover (top-right). I've also fully completed the section that fits underneath the engines (middle) and started one of the mandible frames (bottom). It's amazing how much time this has already taken, but I must be a slow builder!! It's totally worth all of the backache though!! Han, looking a bit happier: That's it until the last parts are back in stock at Lego, so it might be a while before I can post any new updates. I've carefully boxed them all up until I can continue....not that I'm paranoid or anything about the potential damage from light, dust or our cat! Cheers, Robin

Your welcome! I've just noticed that ASDA Direct have some cracking deals, although their search function doesn't seem to be very well so you might need to bear with it! Specific searches don't seem to work, but by 'Lego' does!! Deals available include: Jabba's Palace @ £67.50! (link here) Sith Interceptor @ £47.23! (link here) Gungan sub @ £33.73! (link here) X-wing @ £29.98! (link here) Cheers, Robin

Thanks for the comments everyone! Mr Mann: I'm not convinced about the whole 'weathered' look, but you have to wonder what pH level the Space Worm's mouth was in ESB...I'm guessing it must have been pretty low which could account for the change in colour If I keep it, they will be replaced!! Update: I took today off from work so have been able to make some more progress. Although it's a bit frustrating not having all of the parts I need, it's made the build process more enjoyable as I haven't put myself under any pressure to finish it! And to those who can build it in less than 20 hours I'm very impressed, because I certainly can't! Firstly, I've finished the two panels that fit underneath the front mandibles (below) and one of the sections that fits under the central docking ring. I've included one in the photo to show how it fits together. If you haven't seen a Falcon close-up it's difficult to appreciate the level of detail; it's probably why it's acheived such an iconic status (and has such a high part count!). Just have a look at them & compare it to the current SSD....I know they're different scales, but it's in a different league. Next, one of the top panels for the front mandibles & the cover for the walkway between the cockpit and the centre of the ship, totally beautiful. I particulary love the dark-red it really adds something to the end result  The walkway cover is very interesting to build and it's impressive how tightly it all fits together, as it's a very awkward shape. All these sections are complete apart from a couple of the technic 'teeth' 1 x 4 plates which are in my final order. I've got a couple more sections I can build & then I'm stuck until it arrives! Cheers, Robin

Update: With the arrival of the Chancellor (thanks CopMike!) the guys settle down to some serious building. Apologies for the rubbish photos, we're still in the depths of winter here in the UK. Firstly the legs (last one of these I promise! ) 3 finished, 4 waiting for 1 part: The Old Grey really stands out, so I'll need to replace them in the future..... Next we have the completed docking rings: I don't know why but they're one of my favourite parts of the build, totally beautiful  And finally the rear engines (just missing the little 'radio handles'): This section was great fun to build and I really like the dark blue; it's crying out to be illumated if I can work out how without ruining it's strength. I'm going to build a few of the plates next, more updates to follow shortly. Cheers, Robin

I was amazed to find that my PAB order had arrived today, considering that I'd ordered it late on Friday night. Only 5 days, now that's an impressive service from Lego, most impressive! I only need 365 parts and I'll have everything. So, what does 537 parts @ a cost of £65.51 look like, find out below In all seriousness, I thought that it might be useful for any potential 10179 BrickLinkers to see what I ended up sourcing from PAB; some of these were 'stragglers' to complete other orders that I'd made via BL, but most were because the parts were either i) far cheaper or ii) available in decent numbers! The good news is that I can now start constructing several sections, but the only question is how much do I build as I can't start the main frame yet.... I don't want to build too much out of sequence but it's sooo tempting! More updates to follow shortly Cheers Robin

Please can you try to make your posts more understandable in future! This makes absolutely no sense to me Several of your recent posts have been totally pointless and are cluttering up this thread, which should be for 2013 Pictures and Rumours; it isn't intended to be a ....'wouldn't it be great/cool/wicked if a set contained character x, y or z'! For your information the current Death Star (10188) isn't a UCS model, but the older 'Death Star II' (10143) was.
