Another masterpiece, from the builder with the Midas touch!
-
Well, after about five weeks and two attempts, my 'Pick a Brick' order finally arrived. It was all looking good when I opened it until I realised that it was missing 10 6 x 8 LBG plates, oh how I chuckled So, I just had to make yet another phonecall to CS and they're going to send them asap. I've honestly lost count of the number of calls that I've made to them this month, I'm starting to feel rather embarrassed about it all! However, I'm going to continue building it in the next couple of days and see how much I can do. I think it's fair to say that I haven't had any luck with this order, I'm not sure what's happened.... anyway, more updates soon.

Update: I'm not having much luck at the moment with this.. Unfortunately my PaB order has been 'officially' lost. Ironically it managed to get all the way from Poland to my local distribution depot (less than 5 miles away) on the 11th February, never to be seen again! However, after my earlier problems with the order, I can't praise LEGO's CS highly enough - they've been brilliant A replacement order is already made and I should have the parts within 7-10 days.

Hi Luisantonio & H_Solo, unfortunately I've deleted my original 'Master' files but they're easy to create: i) The inventories are available from Bricklink UCS Falcon 10179: http://www.bricklink...v.asp?S=10179-1 UCS Death Sttar II 10143: http://www.bricklink...v.asp?S=10143-1 ii) Open Excel & save a new file (I find it doesn't crash when you then do the next steps!) iii) Highlight the parts & images on the inventory page (exclude everything above the sticker image!) I found that it's best to start at the end of the list (excluding the extras/alternative/minifigures) iv) Right click on the screen & select 'Copy' v) Then switch to Excel, right click on the sheet & select 'Paste' and wait for a bit....it might show 'Not Responding', but it will eventually transfer the data! vi) Each part type will take up 4 rows & you'll need to re-format the total number of each part required as Excel transfers each number as text. I found it simplest just to over-write them! However, the links will still work, which I found useful.

Hi rynoster I hope you don't mind but I've updated your post with a few changes, it seemed easier than trying to list each one of them! The alternate part numbers I've suggested should be the same colour as the original, but the new version will have a slightly different mold type. I agee with Schneeds about using old grey levers if you can, but they were getting quite rare when I looked for them, so I decided on the readily available black/LBG versions. There haven't been many Falcons sold on Ebay recently, but if you keep looking you may find one at a reasonable cost. To be honest, I'm probably going to sell mine at some point; it was just intended as a project for the winter (and I can always do it again!). It will take a lot of time, and a fair amount of commitment so I'd strongly encourage you to fully cost it before you do anything

Hi kisper For future reference there's a general SW Q& A thread pinned at the top of the forum. I'll merge this thread with it in a bit -
Thanks Chills Hi rynoster, welcome to Eurobricks! I'm glad that you've found my thread helpful and good luck if you decide to go ahead with your own version! It's really worthwhile doing some homework though, it will potentially save you a lot of money! The link you refer to contains most of the main parts that you can readily replace without affecting the model too much. Looking at the parts list, I'd suggest you consider the following, but obviously it depends on your budget (replacement colour or part code in brackets!) 40344 'Black Technic, Brick 4 x 6 Open Center' (LBG) 40345 'Black Technic, Brick 6 x 8 Open Center' (LBG) 6558 'Black Technic, Pin Long with Friction Ridges Lengthwise' (Blue) 4589 'Dark Bluish Gray Cone 1 x 1 without Top Groove' (4589b) 30364 'Dark Bluish Gray Hinge Brick 1 x 2 Locking with 1 Finger Vertical End' (LBG) 6019 'Dark Bluish Gray Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Horizontal (thick open U clip)' (61252) 6538b 'Dark Bluish Gray Technic, Axle Connector (Ridged with x Hole x Orientation)' (LBG) 3456 'Dark Red Plate 6 x 14' (DBG or whatever you prefer!) 42445 'Bar 1 x 12 with 1 x 2 Plate End and 1 x 1 Round Plate End' (99784) 4592c05 'Light Bluish Gray Lever Small Base with Light Bluish Gray Lever' (black lever) 47996 'Light Bluish Gray Boat Mast Rigging Long 28 x 4' (Black) 4095 'Light Bluish Gray Bar 6.6L with Stop Ring (Patio Umbrella Stand) (63965 - 6L) 3308 'Light Bluish Gray Brick, Arch 1 x 8 x 2' (16577) 50990pb03 'Light Bluish Gray Dish 10 x 10 Inverted (Radar) with Radiating Spokes Pattern on Concave Side' (blank LBG) 30365 'Light Bluish Gray Hinge Brick 1 x 2 Locking with 2 Fingers Vertical End' (DBG) 75535 'Light Bluish Gray Technic, Pin Connector Round 2L (Pin Joiner Round)' (62462) 3048c 'Reddish Brown Slope 45 2 x 1 Triple - with Inside Bar' (3048) 3245b 'White Brick 1 x 2 x 2 with Inside Axle Holder' (3245c) 3307 'White Brick, Arch 1 x 6 x 2 - Thick Top with Reinforced Underside' (12939) 32555 'Yellow Technic, Brick 5 x 5 Right Angle (1 x 4 - 1 x 4)' (Black) As far as a reasonable price, for a boxed version in decent condition, they're usually £1200+ but the price seems to be continually rising!

Hi Lukasguy, and welcome to Eurobricks! I tried to Bricklink a 10030 a couple of years ago, after I'd completed a 10179 & 10143, but had to admit defeat after collecting about 50% of the parts. I was trying to source everything new, and from within Europe which made it prohibitably expensive, but you may have better luck. Unfortunately, there's a lot of rare and large parts in the set and unless you can get them cheaply (or find clever alternatives) it may even be cheaper to search on Ebay for a used one..... For future reference, there's a general SW Q & A thread pinned to the top of the forum. I'll merge this with it in a bit -
Hi unhappyeeyore, you should be able to add photos to your posts but you'll need to 'deeplink' them via flickr or Brickshelf etc. All you need to do is copy the URL, click on the 'image' icon (which has the tree on it!), paste in the URL, click 'ok' and it should appear in your post preview. However, please keep the photos to 800 x 600; if you can't link to a small version it's easy to re-size them using MS Paint, instructions here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20787 It's always good to see photos of Bricklinked Falcons!

Hi Luigi347, if you use flickr it gives you the option of deep-linking to a range of different sizes Alternatively, it's really straightforward to re-size the actual photos using MS Paint, instructions are here: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=20787

That's not a bad idea, Bob. Go on, you know that you want to!

After a couple of hours work yesterday, I've built the main frame. It looks a bit odd without the yellow 32555s, but I couldn't justify the extra cost. At least it has the black 6558s this time! It's quite fun to build and feels very solid when it's finished. Unfortunately, I'm still missing some parts so I can't build it in the correct sequence. So, I started to scan through the instructions to see what else I could work on. Next we have the cannons, the tops are identical, but the undersides are different and lock together when in place. I've also built two of the smaller sections for the underside. Not that exciting, but a necessary part of the build! Next we have the legs, which are one of my favourite parts of the set, plus some of the docking rings: And finally, the cockpit (almost complete) and the radar dish which I'm really pleased with. It looks so much better than the plain dish and worth the extra money. However, if I decide to keep it I might try to track down an original version at some point. I can't do much more until my final order arrives but it's been good to make a decent start on it. Cheers, Robin

Hi Bob, yet another masterpiece! I really don't know how you do it, the curves are beautiful I can't imagine how many hours you've spent working on this, but the result is totally worth it. The amount of greebling is perfect, it's crammed with little details, but it doesn't overwhelm it. Do you have any plans for anything else; perhaps something a little more main-stream?

Both the Luke & Darth Battle figures look awful, what were TLG thinking? I honestly wouldn't have guessed that was actual LEGO, it just looks like a cheap and horrible! However, I'm very impressed by both the Imperial Shuttle and Final Duel, definate buys for me. I'm also tempted by the Advent Calendar as well; surely the new Rebel Trooper is confirmation of a new Hoth Set?
-
I'm in total agreement with Anio on this one! On the plus side the box art is beautiful, but the model just doesn't have the 'wow' factor that UCS sets should have. The stand looks really cheap and an after-thought. I don't want to say this, but I can see it being another B-Wing. It's a shame that they didn't choose the TIE Bomber, at least that's a more interesting design....
-
Update: My 'Bricks and Pieces' order arrived yesterday, which included some parts that were either i) considerably cheaper than Bricklink ii) available in sufficient quantities or iii) were needed to finish the set! I've included a photo below for info, hopefully it might be of help to someone, but as I've said before your own mileage may vary! Unfortunately, I've just checked it and I'm missing 7 x 6190 (radio handles) so I'll wait until my my 'Pick a Brick' order arrives and then contact TLG. It has to be said that I haven't had the best luck with this order, for reasons that I won't go into, but I'm not overly impressed by my recent customer 'experience'.... I also found some rather odd parts that I didn't order included as well (the green plate and torso in particular!) I'm going to start building shortly

Hi Inzane, I'm glad that you managed to source everything at a reasonable cost and apologies if I wasn't as helpful as I thought I'd been! I didn't realise that the yellow 32555s had been discontinued by TLG until I placed my final order with them recently for my 10179. I think that it's only recently run out of stock, as I'd checked the website shortly before Christmas and I'm 99% sure that I remember seeing them. One of those things, I guess....

Hi dwong To be honest, there isn't a quick answer this this one, as the prices/availability of some parts seem to vary considerably in different countries My only real advice is to invest time in checking both 'Bricks and Pieces' and 'Pick a Brick' which will give you a starting price, and then start looking around on Bricklink! As unhappyeeyore mentioned, the shipping for TLG is likely to be fixed, and for me it was totally free (as the overall order value was > £50). The shipping costs can really add up, even with small orders. For example I paid $6.10 for one tiny order from Poland, which was totally ridiculous!

Hi dwong Have a good look at TLG's 'Pick a Brick' & 'Bricks & Pieces' first which will give you a starting price for each part before you order anything. As I mentioned earlier a lot of the Bricklink stores with a decent inventory won't be the cheapest, so it's worthwhile looking around. If you can then find parts cheaper on Bricklink (factoring in the cost of P&P) then order everything you can. Personally I'd recommend that you leave the TLG orders to the end so that you can order the odd part here & there (that you couldn't find on Bricklink!). It's a great challenge, but take your time before you order anything

Re: the 3mm LBG hosing, you need the following: 2 x 75c08, 2 x 75c12 and 2 x 75c20. Luckily 2 x 75c20 are included in set 75052 (Mos Eisley) so there's quite a few available on Bricklink at the moment, and if you order 4 this will be enough for all six hoses (e.g. cut two of them into c08 & c12 lengths! ). I'll post some photos of my 'Pick A Brick' and 'Bricks & Pieces' orders when they arrive. As mentioned by Schneeds earlier, there's quite a few parts which I couldn't get cheaper on Bricklink including: 6190 - Dark Bluish Gray Bar 1 x 3 (Radio Handle, Phone Handset) 47905 - Dark Bluish Gray Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Studs on 2 Sides 3703 - Dark Bluish Gray Technic, Brick 1 x 16 with Holes 47753 - Dark Bluish Gray Wedge 4 x 4 No Top Studs 30374 - Light Bluish Gray Bar 4L (Lightsaber Blade / Wand) 47996 Light Bluish Gray Boat Mast Rigging Long 28 x 4 (Black) 6112 - Light Bluish Gray Brick 1 x 12 2465 - Light Bluish Gray Brick 1 x 16 4477 - Light Bluish Gray Plate 1 x 10 3036 - Light Bluish Gray Plate 6 x 8 41539 - Light Bluish Gray Plate 8 x 8 30363 - Light Bluish Gray Slope 18 4 x 2 3045 - Light Bluish Gray Slope 45 2 x 2 Double Convex 4599 - Light Bluish Gray Tap 1 x 1 3068b - Light Bluish Gray Tile 2 x 2 with Groove 6565 - Light Bluish Gray Wedge 3 x 2 Left 6564 - Light Bluish Gray Wedge 3 x 2 Right 41770 - Light Bluish Gray Wedge, Plate 4 x 2 Left 41769 - Light Bluish Gray Wedge, Plate 4 x 2 Right Your own mileage may differ, but it may be a useful starting point

Hi dwong, there's probably better methods but here's how I did it: i) I copied the parts list from Bricklink into Excel and tidied it. ii) I checked a few of my favourite UK shops to see if they had any of the parts in stock, and logged each price on my spreadsheet. iii) I checked both the 'Pick A Brick' & 'Bricks and Pieces' and added the cost to my spreadsheet, and added a few formula to cost it and highlight the cheapest sources via conditional formatting. It's best to search by part number as some aren't shown in the main 10179 list that are actually available! I forgot to mention in my last post that I didn't pay any postage for the orders I made directly from LEGO, so bear that in mind. v) I started making orders at that point (it's best to make the intial orders as large as possible to save on postage costs!) v) Once I'd got the remaining parts down to a reasonable level (<1500) I created a Bricklink 'Wanted' list. However, be warned this will highlight a lot of stores that have everything you need, but at a very high cost!! So, I'd really recommend looking around. I made several orders from sellers with 50-100 feedbacks and I couldn't fault their service (and the parts were considerably cheaper compared to the more 'established' stores!). One way of doing this is to search for a particular part, using the 'Show more filter options' and check the cheapest 5-10 stores. This is where the 'Wanted list' is really useful: in the top left of each shop there's a 'Show all items this store has on my wanted list' which I found invaluable! It took me a lot of time and effort to do this, but it's kept me occupied for hours! Good luck if you decide to go ahead with it. Cheers, Robin This is the second one that I've Bricklinked, but I've had three original ones as well I sold my last one about 18 months ago (when I first heard rumours of a newer one) and have regretted it ever since.... However, I'm due a large bonus sometime this year and I'm also turning 40, so I might try to find another MISB one at some point. I've already mentioned it to my wife, and she didn't look that impressed, but I've found that a gradual 'conditioning' approach usually works well in these situations!! It's only money, after all
