42083 - Bugatti Chiron
Bublehead replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Color me happily surprised @Paul Boratko If what you say is true, which I have no reason to doubt, then maybe we are all ready to change our tune in a week. Heck, I might whistle Dixie and cut a rug if it goes anywhere beyond the Porsche in terms of functions, like an automatic spoiler that reacts to a brake and accelerator pedals or a well (read new) designed hub/suspension system for 4WD... we can all dream can’t we? -

I am not picky, but I have always wondered why bulk Technic parts in all colors has never really been an option for us. Has a truly Technic only element ever showed up on a pick a brick wall? Well why not? -

I need functions though, not looks. I was always disappointed with the Race series models that had looks but no functions. Technic has always been a showcase for realistic functions and features. They don’t get my dollars that easy. If there is no good reason via either new parts or neat functions, this will be a pass for me, even though I will most likely end up with one used sometime after the shock and awe campaign is over. -

I like the idea of a longer contest as well, seeing my last MOC took 8 months to finish... from first bricks to final model. -

Into tiny system details like a Starbucks coffee cup in the cup holder with a copy of Forbes magazine and a croissant sitting on the fine Correnthian Leather upholstered seats. Or any other number of “tiny” details including all the body and interior work done in system bricks. Not liking all the Model Team to Technic crossover here. -

Lets talk color vomit
Bublehead replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Agreed, most kids can, but in a market with high competition, any percentage of an advantage at repeat customers is a win in their books, so it makes it critical that children are satisfied and not frustrated. Trust me, if I was on a management team making this decision, I would vote for vomit if it reduces negative customer feedback but only if it offsets the negative feedback due to the vomit. They would need to do a comparison to fully get my vote. As this is a common business practice, however, I would be very surprised if TLG has not done this comparison and so the outcome was most likely a positive vote for vomit all around. I am afraid vomit is here to stay until the focus groups and forums like these highlight our displeasure with the ? ? ? (Disney’s Lost Lunch) -

Lets talk color vomit
Bublehead replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Reposted from General parts discussion- Thanks goes to @aminnich for starting this thread and this is a general statement to all, not a reply to him. What does it take to get people to understand TLG’s reasoning on the color vomit? The colors make finding parts easier during the build process, they remove confusion between similar parts and ensure THE CHILD has a better construction experience. Which, in turn, makes THE PARENTS’s have a better experience with their TOY purchase. When a CHILD fails to complete a model due to using the wrong parts early in the build, the frustration and disappointment affects the overall acceptance of the TOY. This translates back through the PARENTS as a poor TOY choice, limiting further SALES, which means TLG fails, and Technic Lego, as we know it, goes away. And remember, the vomit did not come from the designer. It comes from the Instructions and assembly group long after the designer hands over the final model for production. The actual color scheme can be changed by the Marketing group which does play testing and focus groups to determine what appeals to the target age group. If you fail to purchase a certain set due to it being ugly, just remember that all the sets you passed on were just another nail in the coffin when either Technic as a theme or TLG itself go out of business. Now before all the trolls crawl out from under their keyboards to say they are not going to let TLG off the hook for crappy models and the color vomit, that all this seems to be not in their best interests if they are trying to sell models to YOU, but the truth is they are not trying to sell to AFOLs. They are selling to the parents of their target demographic, which just happens to be kids ages 9 to 16. I have bought so many models that I hate, loath, or just simply scratch my head at, but I still bought them because parts is parts. If you don’t like a set, for whatever reason, I feel this is great fuel to feed the fire of rebuilding it to suit yourself. -

My reasoning here is not to say I don’t want working brakes, I do, but historically, and by TLG’s own definition, any part on part wear should be reduced or eliminated completely, and at no time should normal play cause any damage or unnecessary wear and tear to the elements. Brakes categorically fall in this bucket, and therefore we will not see them on the Chiron or most likely ever. Again, just my opinion. -

I have been blasted in the past for starting a topic on something just to be told it should go in the general parts discussion thread. Feel free to start one, I am a bit gun shy when it comes to starting threads these days, so I try and put things were they ruffle the least feathers.- 5,466 replies

General Part Discussion

Bublehead replied to Jurss's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I’ve been waiting for almost 25 years for working brakes, ever since the supercar 8880 where it was the only missing functionality. And to date, no brakes. I am pretty sure that WHATEVER has kept them from making working brakes in the past will continue in the Chiron. Brakes, at least real ones, cause parts to be rubbed together intentionally, causing friction and heat. Now Technic Lego isn’t going to melt or catch fire but rubbing parts together intentionally which can scratch or abraid the surface is a Lego no no. So if Chiron has working brakes, then TLG is violating a longstanding rule to do so, or the brakes “work” but only to show movement of the calipers when a brake pedal is depressed, not that they actually engage the rotors. Another reason why no brakes is that if they work like real brakes, the motion at the calipers is negligible and hard to tell they are working anyways except they prevent the car from moving. As a play factor, this means the child has to try and reach inside the cockpit, push a tiny lever buried under the dash on the floorboard, then try and push the vehicle forward. This doesn’t “play well” and is the actual reason we have not seen working brakes yet. Just my $0.02 -

What I find amusing is everyone hates the color scheme and the Disney-esque vomit/barf but rest assured, this is only because we are mostly AFOLs and not CFOLs. If you ask a child does this look cool, they are going to say it looks awesome. Children are not hung up on symmetry or color coordination, and as a matter of fact, have any of you walked through a toy store lately and really looked around? It is almost eye gouging the way they market toys to kids... the more the colors clash the better seems to be the rule of thumb. As an adult, we like things more organized, muted, symmetrical, and refined. So naturally we cringe in horror when we see these colors splattered all over a set we would otherwise like. I take this in stride, buy the set, build it, then modify it to meet my adult tastes and present it here for you guys and gals to tear to shreds, err, I mean “critique”.- 313 replies

Generic Contest Discussion
Bublehead replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
There are some amongst us that are willing to sponsor contests out of our own generosity (our own pockets) to promote Technic and give some of the young, up and coming builders a chance to shine, or some of you old crusty sea dogs a chance to stumble into something worth winning. And if Lego does not see any value in that, I do, and so does @Jim So stay tuned to this forum for some interesting contests...
