Scale Modeling Forum future?
Rudivdk replied to Milan's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, let's merge them back together! The official Technic line is moving closer to scale modelling than ever (licenses, looks, system parts details). And scale model MOCs have a lot of technic parts and functions embedded. So seems like a logical move to put them together. Let's hope it will spark some more scale model builders to share their MOCs again. -
@higgins91 Took me a little to realize, but the rear has 2 yellow springs as well, pointing inside and slightly downwards.

[WIP] Hennessey Venom F5
Rudivdk replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well, I have also learned something from the Defender set: even though I meticulously built that gearbox and it ran smooth, after a few weeks it started cracking and jamming on me, to a point where it is almost unplayable now. Probably dust and some playwear are to blame, but it shows that when you are on the edge of what is possible with Lego gears, time will push it over the edge at some point... So high friction now can very well end up in too much friction in a few weeks. If I were you, I'd first focus on fully separating left and right side to see if that alleviates some of the issues by having less gears engaged. Start simply by just removing one gearwheel from the 'bridge' between left and right and testing that. Should give you some ideas on where to improve further -
[WIP] Hennessey Venom F5

Am I correct in assuming that at any given selected gear (say:even), all the gearwheels of the opposite side (uneven) are backdriven through the connecting 'gearbridge'? This was for me the big problem and cause of stalling lower gears. I fixed it by making another left/right selector clutch at the engine side of the gearbox, hardlinked to the one at the differential side. This way one side is totally idle when a gear in the other side is engaged. -

I tried a similar gearbox setup in a 1:10 car, but with two identical gearboxes left and right and a 1/0.9 ratio between them to make it possible to have even and uneven gears separated. Got it to work as POC, but didn't yet succeed in fitting it properly in my car. It would be interesting to see your approach and compared the two. I might post a thread of my gearbox to discuss further. -
[WIP] [MOC] FWD Hatchback
Rudivdk replied to nano21's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Cool, it's been a long time since I've seen those front and rear suspensions from Sheepo's MPS system used. I did the same lay-out a few years back (in my 1:10 mini-van MOC), but I guess with the currently available parts it would be easier to make it all a bit more compact. The biggest challenge for me back them was to fit the gearbox, but you've tackled that by going RC and skipping the gearbox altogether. Smart move ! As for the actual brand/model: I always look at loads of different pics, to see if I can imagine styling features from real cars in bricks. Usually when you already have an idea how to recreate a distinct feature, the rest will flow from there... But personally I wouldn't choose a complete model to recreate, I always make my own designs based on a few 'borrowed' key features. It's hard enough to make bodywork, even harder to try scale modelling with Technic... -
26287 without LEGO logo

I have only genuine Lego parts in my collection (all from original sets) and I have both versions as well. Seems the printed ones are newer versions. -

When you click on my avatar you are directed to my profile page. Here you find a button with a 'figure' icon and a 'plus' sign next to it, this is the 'follow' button. It might take a while though before you'll get to see some modulars from me, I'm a slow builder with too much projects and ideas on my backlog... -
lego Oloid kinetic sculpture
Rudivdk replied to Diamabolo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Fascinating, great stuff Just wondering though, why the rubber bands on the pedestal, is it because of the torsional powers pulling the parts apart? I can imagine a lot of stress building up at those points... -
Hi and welcome to EB! Good to see you've left your dark age behind, enjoy and happy building!

If you don't have ideas already, I'd suggest you to have a look at the instructions of the bigger Technic planes (42025, 42066 for example) and study/build some of those landing gear legs. Most of them have some sort of lock built into their system, either in the leg hinges themselves, or in the lever/gearsystem that drives them. Might get you off to a flying start (pun intended ). Edit On a totally different note: I have to get me some of those 3-way connectors you have in dark brown in there. Those are really nifty parts for cylindrical builds! I'm still playing with the idea of the F4-U so have to build me a radial engine at some point...

It's awesome to see you and your son building together, it reminds me of the sessions I have with my boys (7 and 5 yo). Keep it up and enjoy together! Happy building.

Wow, you decide to start with the easiest build around Enjoy, happy building!

Ha, you're wrong there, I read all of it . My backstory is quite similar, although I never fully stopped playing with LEGO, just had some 'misty ages' where it went in low gear. I love the Ninjago stuff as well, I have all the NC modulars, Airjitzu temple and TLNM Destiny's bounty (the biggest one). I'm playing with ideas to expand the city Ninjago style, but my collection is mostly made of Technic so it will be quite and investment to build my own NC modulars. Anyway, as you can see, you've found a place with like-minded people! Enjoy your stay and happy building! -
Hi Eric, welcome to EB! Good to see the forum was already helpful to you even before you joined Enjoy and happy building!

I can totally relate to this, I have two boys age 7 and 5, and somehow what they like to do most is take their minifigs apart... (well, I guess it is part of their ninjago-play-stories, what else should you use all those blades for, eh?) Anyways, a bit late maybe, but welcome to EB! A little piece of advice: share your creations when you are not totally satisfied as well, and kindly ask for tips to improve. It will rocket-boost your learning curve when you can tap into all the knowledge here in the forum. Don't let yourself be discouraged by being a newbie, we have all been there... Enjoy and happy building!

Amen to that. Back on topic: Nice review, seems like a surprisingly good set, at least for it's size/prize. My kids will definately love it, not too small, not too big, not too complicated, perfectly playable! Looks like waiting for the March release was worth it! And a nice parts pack as well with some interesting new shapes and colors. I need some yellow parts for a MOC I'm working on... Edit: @Jundis maybe it is to 'stabilize' the digger during playing, by holding it in two directions: left-right movement 'locked' by right side knob, forward-backward movement 'locked' by holding the back knob. It is also easier to hold these with both hands (and operate them simultaneously) compared to two knobs on the same side.

If the poll isn't working by the time the next 2-stage contest voting starts, we could always start with members just typing their xx number of favorite entries in a regular post for stage 1. But, the current setup works sufficiently as well, no need to rush anything. I think you have got enough on your mind already while tending to the platform, so let's not unnecessarily increase the backlog...
-
@Jim: Since we are talking suggestions on voting mechanics... I was thinking of a way to make the two-stage voting a bit more accessible and less cumbersome. I came up with this idea: Instead of using the F1-style count on both stage 1 and 2, why not make stage 1 (more like) a poll (select your xx(10?) favorite entries). The 10 most chosen entries (just count the poll results) go through and then stage 2 would be a member voting round with F1 style points. Calculating your points two times (and probably repeating most of what you did in stage 1) seems like a somewhat redundant effort... It would also bring some more excitement, as in the current setup it is already pretty obvious which entries will end up on the podium after stage 1.

Thanx, I'm glad the competition got extended with a week, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to finish all the presentation stuff in time, at least not the way I wanted it... Glad you like it!
