Book III, Challenge II, Category A: Aid for Nocturnus
Grover replied to Muakhah's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very nice little build! I like the colors, lines, and the angled look. The flags overhead and the crating of supplies is excellent. You also raise a point, too, since Nocturnus is not playable, there aren’t many builds, and it seems overlooked (maybe we could all benefit from a challenge set there?). In any case, well done! -
Really well done! As others have noted, a bath house is the perfect place for intrigue. I love the detail in the walls and the baths. There’s plenty of action with the figures and the story covers it perfectly. The only part that is a little confusing is the use of blue in the floor tile and as water, although if you don’t have a lot of trans pieces it makes sense. Great job and I want to see where the story goes!

Challenge II - Category A - Caravan to Bluevale

This is a really outstanding little build! I like the clean lines and the very nice work with the supplies on the wagon. As others have said, the mini posing is great. My only question is, if this is in the mountains, why’s is the land so flat? Maybe it’s not in the mountains yet but you mentioned they had begun their ascent so it seemed a bit flat to me. Love the story though! Can’t wait to see where Lady Eleanor winds up! -
The Tales of Lady Gwenllian 0. Introduction 1. The arrival of Lady Gwenllian aboard the Cedar Serpent 2. Scouting a Site 3. Early Spring in Prenmôr 4. The Fishery and Shrine at Prenmôr 5. Opening of the Prenmôr Quarry While Lady Gwenllian was helping the villagers of Flewd move to Prenmôr, the last of the winter snows had thawed, freeing the earth for work. The first order of business for construction was to open a quarry for the massive amount of stone needed. The local limestone was ideal for building, and its proximity to the castle site eliminated the need to transport stone from great distances, facilitating construction of the main fortress and necessary outbuildings. Lady Gwenllian hired a number of laborers and a few stonecutters from the areas around Prenmôr. The limestone was hewn in the traditional manner by hand with pickaxes, roughed into blocks, and then shaped by a stonecutter before being broken out with a wedge and trimmed to final shape. The finished stones were loaded onto a horse drawn cart and taken to the building site, while loose gravel was hauled out in baskets on the backs of workers.

I really like this build. The brick built camel works well, I think, and the layered dark and light tan wedge plates looks great. The tree with the small rock stand out on a small vignette like this and look good. As others have said, the black base has a lot of contrast, and I think you could probably get away without it, but it doesn't really detract from the build, so it doesn't really bug me much. Very nice job!

Nice build! I like the practical use of the interior space, and especially the rafter beams. The roof is creative as well and looks good. I like the barrels stacked, too. Why do they have a tan lid? Is that supposed to signify something? I like the working doors and the service window, too. Nice work!

That's a great small ship design! I like the use of the dark blue for water as well. I would agree that it looks like some of those boxes are not secure! If you have a net piece, you can throw it over the boxes like they used to do to secure stuff on deck. Nice job!

What a fun creation! I love the movement in all of it. Reminds me of those ninja warrior courses but medieval. Great job!

You do a really nice job with the closeup pictures and the detail in the background for all the walls. The wonky setting of the walls gives a feeling of a disrepaired, maybe unusual rounded setting that works very nicely. Sometimes the story is so complex as to be confusing, but a re-read helps. Well done!

Great build! I will echo what others have said, and agree that the house itself is fantastic. I wouldn't change anything. Love the detail in the tudor work with the curved tiles and the varied color walls of tan and white. The stone work looks good for the building, and the roof is spot-on. The main road looks good, and I think the color choice is good as well. The dark green looks good for areas that are shaded, but for the large leaf plants, you could go with less grass, or even some olive green to signify the grass struggling there under the shade of the plants. As Bas said, the large leafy plants kind of look too big for figures, but, if you do something like what en_zoo did in his latest build, you can add large flowers (en used colored radar dishes) to them and then it just looks like a large leafy, flowering plant and it appears to be more proportional in my opinion. Hard to critique this, though, as it's very good!

This is a very cool build. I like the clean lines and especially the interiors. The dark and light grey colors are great, and they work well with the dark red roof. I like the use of the slope pieces as well, as I have always preferred them for roofs that are meant to be well maintained. The raised porch with stairs looks great, and the interiors are a lot of fun. If you were to improve on this, you could get rid of the vertical lines by overlapping the brick facade bricks, although this would necessitate putting non-facade bricks on the end or somewhere in the middle. The olive green vines up the side of the building are great, though, and I think really help tie the levels together. Great job!

Really nice work! I like the details int he stonework, the many spectators, and the racers themselves. The color choices of the dark orange and white work well, too. The story is good: clear and concise, easy to follow. I look forward to more builds and stories from you!

This is quite the story! I have been reading along. Kind of dark in parts, and glad you didn't build that, but the builds are very nice. There's a lot of detail there and great use of the printed bricks from the old adventurer's sets. Great job!

Book III Challenge II - Bread, Water and Drums
Grover replied to en_zoo's topic in Guilds of Historica
Really great work! There are so many great details here: the person swimming in the water, the key and the saw above the doors denoting the shops, the detail of the doors, the awesome blues you use in your tudor designs, the wagon with supplies, the foliage near the well with some great flower work (which is color coordinated), and the minis being posed. The roof texturing is awesome, too. The only part I'm unconvinced of is the color choice on the roof. The dark green seems unusual to me by comparison to the browns. I don't know if it's meant to be like moss or something, but it's the only part I'm not totally in love with. What a great build! Keep up the great work!- 22 replies

Love all the little details with the canopy, the snake head, all the painted skies with the clouds, etc. as the background! The candles, tree, and stone benches make a believable but clean scene. Nice work!

Very nice work! I love the detail that went into the interior walls, the hinge pieces for cabinet doors, and the grill pieces around the fireplace that help give texture to the brown bricks. The plates stacked with the jumpers to give a brickwork effect on the quay is fantastic. It really lends to texture that's believable on the stone. The entire housefront there looks very good and the color choices are bold, yet not outlandish. Excellent work!

What a fun build! I like the minotaur cave--it seems very natural. The snow hanging in spots around it looks good, and the larger snow bank near the trees looks nice as well. The trees are great, and you make good use of that building technique. Very nice job all around, with a good story to boot. I look forward to more!

Varlyrio Guild Challenge 2E: Spring of Styx
Grover replied to MaasEffekt's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is a pretty build with a nice use of colors. I'm assuming that the tree is kind of dormant or half-dead, otherwise may benefit from more foliage as others have said. I like the dark color choice and the bright blue opposed to that. While small, there is a nice level of detail and I really enjoy the story! Great job!- 9 replies

Prelude: Always Be Ready To Lend a Helping Shove
Grover replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice work! I like all the details that make the MOC seems very Varlaryian: the small columns, inclusions of gold decoration, the nice railings around the stone harbor... well done! I appreciate the work and time that goes into taking closeups for conversations as well; it is a lot of work but sometimes helps clarify who's speaking, and adds something of a movie-like or comic-book feel to the story, keeping the reader moving along. Great job! -
Your tudor style is great! Roof, wall texture, the plaster and lathe work on the walls, plus the old-school shutters are my favorite! Love the snow on the tree and the star on top as well. Great work with the flags on a string (I may borrow that at some point) and the many peasants. I like the snow on the ground, although I don't think it looks quite as natural as your last build, but it may just be that the peasants have trampled it down. Excellent work!

[Freebuild - Mitgardia] Abandoned Kirk
Grover replied to Spud The Viking's topic in Guilds of Historica
I agree with some of the others, the up top perspective shot is actually the best of all your pictures. The roof is great, especially with the hole, and the overall design is nice. The stones up front seem a little plain to me, but not bad; it might benefit from a little decoration, although if it's an older church with small windows, it may have less decoration. I like the priest out front as well. Nice work! -
Another simple, elegant build that looks great! Love the use of the SW planet as a dome. As usual, your color choice really looks good, and I get a mediterranean vibe from the build. I'm enjoying seeing how these builds fit together in your city!
-
I really like this. The forced perspective looks great, and I don't see many of these. The small size in no way detracts from the build, and I really love it as a vig for moving the story along with some perspective shots to give the reader an idea of the beauty of the land. Great job!

Gnomish Warehouse of Kashgar [VAR - Freebuild]
Grover replied to narbilu's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice build! I like how it's clean, yet with the color choice and the details, it looks very well done and well thought out. I really love that you keep adding to your city, too, rather than tearing down each MOC and reusing all the pieces--gives the city a cohesive look. Well done!
