Heroica RPG - Quest #90: A Trip to the Circus
Scorpiox replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
Haldor tosses a remedy to Thormanil and moves forwards to tackle skirmisher K. "Get yourself back in the game, we need to start knocking these guys off or we'll be overrun." -

Haldor roars a victorious cry and continued hacking through the lines of kingdom soldiers. He draws near to skirmishers j and k and engages them both. -

"This is it. Let's hold the line." Haldor waits until the foes draw near before breaking into a charge, he closes in on skirmishers D and E from the front row. -

"If we let the orcs win, they're gonna club every human they can reach. The kingdoms will burn, every man will die. Fighting off both sides is the lesser of two evils, and it's the option we have to take." -

"So what do we do now, eh? There's no way off this bridge without a fight, and if we go along with you and let the armies clash: well, we might as well hurl ourselves into the river and drown. You signed up for this quest as much as any of us, so if you'd rather run than do your job, you're welcome to leave headfirst into the rapids. I care about what happens to these people, I'm not about to give up now." -

"Glad I'm not the only one who actually seems to care more about preventing this cataclysm than just saving their skin. Times like this, I can really appreciate the calm thinking of an elf. Suggestion for you, perhaps you ought to decide a subordinate to manage each flank closely whilst you're taking care of the bigger picture?" What I'm suggesting is this: it would be easier for a deputy leader on each side of the battle to choose actions for inactive heroes as they will likely be following the events of that particular skirmish more closely. He nodded to Nerwen respectfully and began checking all of his equipment. Haldor reached a hand inside his shirt and felt for an old charm that he'd been hanging onto for half of his life. The more time passed, he feared for his life less and less, but his will to succeed flared only greater. -

"Of course, take what you like. If it keeps you up longer, then we're all better off." -

I think that Haldor can equip four artefacts at his level, correct? "Some of you are gonna have to fight for the kingdoms, so make that decision pretty bloody fast! You, greenhorns" He indicates to the newer heroes. "You're welcome to borrow anything I'm not using, including weapons and artefacts." Haldor pulls on his pugilist's gloves and adopts a battle position at the front of the rank, his dualis sceptres held defensively out in front of him. He wasn't feeling nervous now, only strangely excited. The nord stood there, almost trembling with anticipation as the ordered ranks of the High Kingdoms closed in. Even if he didn't make it out of here alive, this would make a damn good story for the others to tell. -

Haldor takes a smelling salts and smashes the empty bottle onto the bridge. "I'll take the Eastern flank - who's with me?" "Help yourselves to my artefacts, folks." -

"Heck, why not? Besides Wren, this is the biggest shit any one of us has ever been involved in. I don't know about you, but there's pretty much nothing for me waiting back in Eubric. Friends, drink, a comfortable home... but what's the point? I've been thinking long and hard, I'd like to see this one through. Appreciate the communal concern, but I'm not fussed about how this one ends up. This is something worthwhile, something to kick the bucket for. I like these orcs, I want to sort things out or get sorted out myself. I've needed a purpose for some time, and if you'll excuse the crap I'm letting run, this is it. I'm bored." He looked out across the bridge and shut his eyes for a moment. "I've made my peace with my gods, I'd like to make my peace with all of you too." "If we're going to our deaths, it might as well be you running at the front. I support you, as leader of our motley crew." -

"So I guess that a catastrophic massacre ain't really your problem either. You realise that a lot of people will die if we don't stand here until we're done, don't you? I'd also reckon that the millions are a damn sight more important than the score of us sell-swords from an arrogant isle. Of course, I'd love not to get mangled, but this is about everything other than Heroicans making it out alive." -

"Mate, I think you may have got the wrong end of the stick. We're holding this bridge against both sides, stopping everything that comes near until everyone gets the picture... or the bridge collapses with us underneath." -

"I side with the orcs, hell, if we last even ten minutes out there I'll be pretty bloody pleased. If this works, then great, if not - then we're all dead. What could possibly go wrong?" "It's over, mate. We ain't got a hope in hell of a diplomatic solution. Even if the clan generals themselves wanted to end this, it's too late to pull back - we're pretty much committed right now. If anyone's got a tearful goodbye to say, now's the time." -

"Shut up. This is blatantly not the time for you, or any others, to act like little girls." He turns to others. "I'm going to cut to the chase. We were just milling around the orcish lands, trying to avoid a situation like this occurring through rash action when these kingdoms that you're working for decided that it was time for some bloodshed. Times like these, you've got to use your head and pick the right side. The kingdoms started this war, and great pain has already been dealt on both sides. Clearly, we're beyond hope of a diplomatic solution, so if you want to support the right side in this war, that'd be the one that's now currently under threat from invasion. Cross over to our bank, before it's too late - undo the wrongs inflicted by the side you find yourself on." Haldor extended a hand, noticing a certain elf standing amongst the opposite rank. "Jess, come with me. I need you to trust me, and pretty bloody soon. We've seen first-hand what the kingdoms will do if they manage to punch a hole in the orc forces, this has to end." -
"We're here to do what we're bloody well told. The point is, you had better be prepared to do your job."
-
"If the heroes march in the kingdoms' ranks out of chance rather than choice, they will back down when we ask them to. Either way, we now have a war on our hands, so that other party is going to have to get out of the way. It's not a question of ensuring peace - we here to hold off an invasion."
-
The only interesting thing about Ditto are its possible links to Mew/Mewtwo.
-
"This is bigger than a group of sell-swords with righteous-complexes holding personal friendships. We're part of the fight, now, we have to do what we can to prop-up the good guys. This war spells the fate of more people than all of us together have ever known. The others, they picked the wrong side, they chose to fight for the aggressors. When the time comes... you don't know those people."
-
The reward descriptions are hardly an accurate summary of the actual rewards that one may receive during the quest anyhow, so most of the time I don't pay any attention to them.

Haldor strained his eyes through the half-darkness, trying to get a better look at the figures on the bridge. "Heroes, they're bound to be. If it turns out one of the other parties is holding that bridge, we'd better take a shot at talking them down before go in fighting." He turns to survey the faces of the others nearby, not betraying a hint of nervousness that had crept into his heart whilst they waited. Haldor drinks a tonic and a mead, and heals Olmstyr.
-
"Never fought in a war before - this should be interesting. I hope you have all made peace with your gods."
-
"Someone who as far as we know kills our ally isn't a bloody innocent. Maybe if it were you getting dragged off you'd be more likely to give a toss than you do about Olmstyr."
-
"Confused girl who pissed off with our contact, probably doing him untold harm and injury. Yeah, I'm fine with killing her. This is serious stuff, we can't have misguided girls trying to kill our operatives. "
-
"Next time we see that freak, we kill her."
