AoM: House Phase 1: Summer Mountain Hut
Henjin_Quilones replied to Ayrlego's topic in Guilds of Historica
This is an excellent first build in the guilds, I must say! I have nothing to critique, since I like the bricks for the base, as a refreshing change from the norm, and unlike Titus, I think the roof looks great in comparison to the ground, since they should be the same (why would different grasses and plants grow on the roof than on the ground three feet away?). All of the texture on the wall gives a great feel for a rough stone construction, which is appropriate for a mountain hut. Looks good, and welcome to the guilds! -

@dalle, welcome to the Guilds! I look forward to seeing some builds, and I am glad to have you in Avalonia. I'll add you to the list of members soon! -
Call them orcs and put it in the western foothills of the Varlyrian mountains! I like the shaping and the interesting use of colors in the landscape, but I would suggest not being so precise with the color groupings in the terrain. Color blocking is good, since it keeps it from being busy, but being too clean with it makes it look unnatural. As for the building, the blockiness of the walls and the heftiness of the look are great for the inhabitants, I must say. Good work!

Book III - Varlyrio: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Henjin_Quilones replied to Rogue Angel's topic in Guilds of Historica
It applies to all Historicans, so yes, it is relevant to Varlyrio. And we're working on getting it back up and flowing again - you could be the first new post in a while! I don't know how you Varlyrians want to do it, but it is the way to get settlements recognized in Avalonia now. -

Is there really a significant difference between mercenary and treasure holder? That is what a mercenary wants to be, at least, and the only reason he fights for one side over the other; all I am saying is that we're willing to pay more for top-notch talent than the other guys. -

@Zilmrud, great to have you in the Guild! I will get you added to the member list shortly. @TitusV, looking good! Nobody else can pay you as much as the treasury of Avalonia has been authorized to transfer to Arthur's account, so don't bother looking around. The gold taken from the Drow after they were soundly defeated at the Battle of Green Leaf Pass is quite the pile... -
Very nice ship, dG! I like how Avalonian it is. It looks period appropriate, and the SNOT log bricks in the sides make for a nice detail. I only wish Lord de Gothia's stay in Mesozoic had lasted longer! (Though he apparently aged quite a bit while away...)

More dinos please! I hope you are not fully done turning Dinotopia into GoH LEGO builds, because I absolutely love those books, and your builds are doing them justice. The forced perspective through the arches is probably my favorite detail, since it is so well done (better even than in your A Safe Haven challenge entry). I love the gates, the tower, the trees, and the randomly staggered windows (that make it look old and lived in). Also, that bay window with the gold dome and window flowers is excellent. My one critique is that the square seems oddly empty of people and activity in general.

I really like the manor proper, but I find myself turned off by the sand green walls all around. I do approve of the non-conventional color choices for the rocks and trees, and I even like the idea of the sand green, but visually it takes up too much of the picture, I think, especially being relatively unadorned as it is. That said, the Mitgardian details of the manor are great, especially those horns on the ridgeline, the axes at the end, the tower, the diamonds along the walls, and all of the small windows (I too got the Great Hall, and love the rectangular windows from it!).
-
As SK said, everything being brown makes the detail of the background get lost. However, that does allow all of the attention to be on the fig and avoids distractions from any extraneous details. I like the rafters and the use of the quarter circle tiles on the back wall, though my favorite detail is probably the cheese windows.

A Visit to Kaliphlin - The Lion's Eye Chapter 1 - Freebuild
Henjin_Quilones replied to mccoyed's topic in Guilds of Historica
I really like the white and gold as the frosting on the tan/dark tan cake, so to speak. They are appropriate accent colors that make the structure pop. I like that you included interiors, too. And please, reference Bandari and Mwamba all you like! There are indeed cat-people in the city of Bandari and Mwamba in general, though they call them aelfcats there rather than lionells. I imagine they are the same thing, however. Bandarian aelfcats:- 24 replies

I am personally not a huge fan of the comic style, though I have nothing against it per se. If you like it, go for it! I do like the story, and the goat's contributions to the conversation are the best. I really like the way you have mixed the two bleys in the rockwork, and the various SNOT portions look good, too! I look forward to seeing the next chapter soon.

The landscape is very nice, dG! I love the way you have made it chaotic like a real forest without it being too busy and cluttered visually. It makes a very good backdrop for the scene in the corner. Hopefully Lena will be rescued soon!

AoM Storehouse Phase 2: Sorgheim Stores
Henjin_Quilones replied to The Stad's topic in Guilds of Historica
The way the building is built into the hill is great, and I especially love the thick stone columns up front. The way you SNOTed the log bricks into the wall to look like horizontally laid logs is also very nice. The picture quality is not the greatest, as Gideon was saying, but the build is pretty great. The tree in the back is also probably the best birch tree I have seen in LEGO, with a good proportion between the trunk and canopy. I can't wait to see the modules hooked up! -
Book III - Avalonia: Guild sign-up and Discussion

@AilhbeA settlement needs to meet at very least the hamlet requirements, though of course villages, towns, and cities are even better! A town would definitely get you on the map. And de Gothia's Book II builds, at least, can be found here, if you scroll down to his name. I don't know if he has kept a running log of all of his builds ever, though that would certainly be impressive to behold if he has. You could also click on his avatar and go to his profile, and then look at his content, filtering for the topics he has created - though it it is four pages long! -

@de Gothia and @MiloNelsiano, your settlements have been added. A few others ( @Simon_S, @Kerntechniker, and @Bregir) who built their settlements up to be officially registered have also been added, even though the builders may or may not be active in the Guilds any more. dG, I don't think you need to re-do the tasks; you are an official Avalonian, and one of high status, to boot. Now, you might want to re-do the tasks, as a way to introduce your next generation of figs, or to develop a new settlement somewhere else, or build a bigger, better castle that keeps you on the couch for months due to your blown budget, but that is all up to you. -

@Ailhbe, some of the rivers have been named, but they flow through so many lands that I imagine that every one of them has multiple names depending on whom you ask. If you say, "the locals call it _____" you can't go wrong! @de Gothia Benoic is still a realm, we just made the borders ambiguous. Where exactly is Sionnach, by the way? You have built it up enough it deserves to be marked on the official map. @kahir88 It takes more than a build or two to make a settlement. I would read the Task 4 description to see what you need to qualify as a hamlet, village, town, and city. A single builder can have multiple settlements, but it takes some serious effort to get them built up so I am not sure anyone has really built more than one. -
Nocturnus still exists, obviously, but it is no longer a playable guild. It is a lawless, chaotic mess in the east that your character could visit at his peril... But yes, you could still build something there, just like you could build something in Varlyrio, Kaliphlin, or Mitgardia, despite being an Avalonian. You just cannot choose to live there anymore.

Henjin_Quilones replied to Henjin_Quilones's topic in Guilds of Historica
Avalonia will now be like the other guilds, in that we will no longer be claiming territory on the map with discrete borders; this does not mean that your land no longer exists, however. Now, if you want it get a city from your land on the official map of the Guild, I suggest you start churning out builds for Task 4! -
I was more speaking for freebuilds, since Challenge builds generally have their own rules, but you are correct.
-
Yes, that is fine! You just need to join a guild for titular purposes: to accrue points for a guild and to have a side for Challenges, and such things. But your character could in theory live or travel or spend all of his or her time elsewhere. So you could be a member of Kaliphlin, but build only in Nocty, or a member of Mitgardia, Avalonia, or Varlyrio but build only in Nocty. But really, Nocty-type architecture could be seen in many places, especially western Varlyrio, northeastern Kali, or various places in western Avalonia (i.e. Enchanted Forest or Mystic Isles).

If you guys don't win I will be extraordinarily surprised! These are fantastic.

The elves of Hesperia in the far west of Avalonia must have at least some Kolgari blood in them, to judge by the hair colors... Looks like a great new guild! Glad it is finally playable. -

Wolfpack was my childhood, typically allied with the Foresters, though sometimes with the Black Falcons; they were always against the Black Knights, who are still my largest knight faction even today. Good to see some sigfig pics rolling in! -
@Brickwolf Great to see you over in GoH, and I love the idea of the Knights of Octan - the company is indeed ancient! Too bad you're building in Kali though... Sorry for missing your intro earlier, welcome! @Windusky Great to have you back!
