  1. I've been looking at this a little more trying to grasp why I feel the model is not accurate. But I think I know why; the hood is much too long compared too the front window. In the real model the front window is more curved and surpasses the front wheel axes. That makes the hood look much shorter than in your replica.
  2. This has turned into something very creative! As for the housing, you could make it even more steam punk. Perhaps also add something that makes more noise.
  3. I don't agree. Maybe most mechanical functions have been done, but they always can be done better.
  4. Nice! Simple, but very flowing !
  5. Thanks! I don't.know exactly, but going by the 1m:32s I filmed it makes about 50 LEGO minutes, 10 LEGO hours and 5 clock cycles (2.5 LEGO days) in 18 minutes. Thanks Ludo! My father also has a (wooden) clock with only a face and no house, which is where the inspiration comes from. Correct!
  6. Hanging on a wall with a longer and lighter pendulum. Autonomy now is 18 minutes.
  7. This does not amaze me. This forum has a very social vibe. Even my some what harsh OP results in a very sophisticated discussion.
  8. Btw, some responses are about recognition. I may have sounded annoyed in the OP, but for me that has nothing to do with recognition. I feel very much recognized. I have been referenced by famous builders in their latest MOCs, which is about the biggest compliment I can think of.
  9. I actually completely agree with you and practically feel the same way. I enjoy this forum and it's diversity very much. Only every now and than this feeling pops up that I somehow long back to the old school Technic days and wish the entire community would go back there with me. Maybe it's just me getting old. I'm sorry if my OP was discriminating or offending in any way. I think it was a bit of an unkind way of sharing this uncomfortable feeling I sometimes get. I don't know if it was a wise thing to share it here. It does on the other hand give a lot of interesting responses that all make sense. You are right about the vs. connotation. I rephrased the topic name. Like I said, my OP was maybe a bit of an unkind way of sharing a feeling of disappointment or longing back. I wouldn't want to open the dark door you are referring too any further than I might have done.
  10. This has triggered quite some response, which I think is good. I didn't read everything yet, but I sure will later. My OP sure reflects some annoyance. Using the term showing-off maybe was a bit harsh; it refers to the extreme side of the spectrum. I was triggered by the Holes in Technic MOCs topic, which made me wonder, how did we diverge from the core Technic theme so much. I wanted to express that I sometimes feel disappointed when I see the discussion is about aesthetics rather than Technic more and more. I wanted to trigger some discussion about this tendency. However, my personal disappointment is no reason to change anything. I did say I sometimes wish showing MOCs would be in a different forum, but apparently there is a need for both aspects in a single forum and that's perfectly okay. This is how the forum has grown on the community.
  11. In general I have the impression that the majority of members active on the Technic forum judge models by their looks rather than by their build quality and technical quality. A pity in my opinion. I see people cheering at models with opposite Ackermann geometry. Shame on them. This forum actually has two types of audiences: one with leaders and followers and one with people trying to discuss and discover how things work or how they can get things to work. Over time I have come to ignore the mere showing-off posts, with every time the same people cheering, more and more.. I sometimes wish their would be two forums, one for presenting end-results, MOCs, and one for WIPs, technical discussion and questions. Another aspect of the showing-off-side of this forum is that apparently Technic models are only front-paged when they look awesome. Why not front-page a great working gearbox? Or a game-changing proof of concept. This is a Technic forum after all. I'm curious what others think about this.
  12. If minimizing holes comes at the price of bodywork that comes apart easily and relies on flimsy connections than I rather look at holes. Don't forget that for LEGO-outsiders even the best-looking models look like insects, so it's all kind of relative.
  13. Looking very promising! The only thing I don't really like is the engine bed, I personally like to see it more open.
  14. I like the black one the most too. Makes a nice contrast with the pendulum bob and the clock face.
  15. I built a prototype of the clock face to check how well it keeps its shape. I had to reinforce it with axles for the half minute indicators, but that seems to look quite good actually. I will order the white parts now.
  16. Thanks @Appie, @Victor Imaginator, @TechnicRCRacer, @JonathanM, @mocbuild101 and @agrof! This is why I like having a WIP topic, it pushes me further. I think I understand. I moved the pins with pinhole to the outside. Is this better:
  17. I thought I was decided, but the ridiculous amount of clock house parts and @Appie's comments made me doubt. So I started designing a clock face instead. The (LEGO) time system of this clock is 4 LEGO hours in a LEGO day (2 in a clock cycle), 5 LEGO minutes in a LEGO hour and 30 LEGO seconds in a LEGO minute. I wanted to do something with the 5 minutes in an hour, so I took the challenge to make a regular pentagon with 5 black minute indicators. Every time the second hand makes a cycle, the minute hand moves to the next black indicator. Halfway every two indicators their are small indicators that indicate half minutes and half hours. The face consist of two pentagons. The distance between the pentagons is practically 6 studs. Please let me know what you think.
  18. Aha. It's not a 6L liftarm, but a 9L bent liftarm (or actually 48 of them ):
  19. I made some renders of all variations on Crowkillers frame I know of. Varying from the simple version to versions that enclose a gear (8t/12t, 16t/20t, 24t) to drive the engine. Note that the variations from left to right in the first image correspond to the variations from right to left in the second image. Never seen that one before. It's great! The half pins on one side are quite essential.
  20. Aha, my mistake. But even then I wouldn't build an engine that relies on it's own crankshaft to stick together. It would incline unnecessary friction to the crankshaft.
  21. Relies on gravity, if I'm not mistaken. I would use a better secured option.
  22. First seen in Crowkillers models. Or slightly different with a 12t gear enclosed:
  23. True, although I am sensitive to what others think of it. We'll see how this turns out. Thanks, that was my idea too. Well, the minute hand is longer than the hour hand and for the second hand both longer and shorter hands are common.
