I think Captain Grog meant the lighter spots of the same color as the piece is almost going to white. They seem to be marks of machines - like places where plastic comes out of the molding machine and is than cut of later. just like if you bend plastic things. I have quite some such parts from the newer sets but never noticed anything like that on the older parts. I think the overall quality has been quite worse lately.

I knew I couldn't sleep some time for this one! I can't stand the updates with still having the gap in your model :P The magical number is 11 (or 9 if someone prefers it)! Which means if the hallway is 9 studs wide ( 11 with the wall) and if the smaller pentagon towers sides are 11 studs long and the angles are right, it can be done without any gaps! All the angles are the same - inside of an pentagon = 108, meaning the hinge needs to be bent for 72 degrees. Sam for the ones being used for big and small pentagons as the ones connecting the tower to the main wall. But enough talk, here's the picture: I did play a bit to figure out how to make nicer tower corners and any other ideas are appreciated. I also played with the warehouse a bit and different towers interior entrances. Anyone feel free to use this template. I wonder when I'll have some more time to continue this build ... I'm looking forward for some great creations, hope someone does it out of real bricks! Here's the lxf!

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
MstrOfPppts replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
Every theme has its end when it's exhausted. POTC is far from it after just a year and 8 sets from 4 movies. I can't say that TLG lacks ideas so I would love to see at least one more wave. If they produce 2 ships each time, they've got material for at least 3 more waves if we only count the most important ships. Also there's a big lack of figures from the movies. I miss all the pirate lords, the Spaniards the Honk Kong people Tia Dalma and so on and on ... As for the classic pirates, I do agree they should reappear but I'd prefer it after another wave of POTC (Come on, I just got used to the fleshies :D). And they should go a bit more civilian and ports way rather than producing a new generic ship and smugglers islands every wave of classic Pirates. -
That's a cool figure! I really need to come up with my sigfig, but never find time to experiment and try out different combination. And I'm to picky to go just with the first thing I put together ... Interesting note on the flags, have to check my out.

General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
MstrOfPppts replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
So are there any rumors around what LEGO is doing with this fine line? Any statistics about the sales and how satisfied TLG is with it? I really hope we do see another wave after the Black Pearl in September! -
You painted that with a brush, right? It's clearly seen from pictures that there's too much paint on it - at least the layer surface is not even. I gues it's from painting white over black, which is quite hard to cover. Using an airbrush would make a better result I think. From far the hats look very nice!

Elizabethan Privateer The Princess Ceinwyn
MstrOfPppts replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Pirate MOCs
Hey this is an amazing ship! I really like the detail. However I'm not too fond of glueing LEGO but I totaly understand you. With all the clips there would be far too many gaps and the model wouldn't be so smooth! It's just my collection is not big enough to simply use some items to glue them on a model and never disassemble it. LEGO is far too precious ... May I only add that I'd relly like to see it with some crewmembers added. It would make the ship alive and there would be something happening in the model. Never the less it's still one big masterpiece! -
Yap, that is the best reason I can think of. But what do you mean they don't go well with the older ones. I really like different shades of brown for MOCs. It makes the world more colorful and realistic. Wooden things are rarely exactly the same color.

Congratulations to all participants and especially to all the winners, which I think are really well deserved! PoTC is one of my favourite movies and therefor I'm really glad for this contest. Also thanks to the organizers for it!

Hey, I didn't know wether to write this here or in the specials theme and decided to do it here. I have a Fabuland postman dog and wonder if there is any safe way of removing its hat without braking something or injuring either the hat or head. The mould does seem to be of two pieces but are prertty tight together. Is it glued? Thanks for any advice.

Pirates of the Caribbean Contest - Mailing List Division Voting
MstrOfPppts replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
Damn I hate reading :D I have finally break through all the entries and will share some feelings here (doubt someone will read them, but still). First of all thanks for a great contest it was much fun and many promising entries were written. The idea of the constructive critics was also nice and the entrants posting their stories as WIPs helped to improve them even more. Though I am a bit disappointed with the amount of voters. Only a few days left and not even on the second page yet! I wish the community would share some more respect to the entrants. Anyway, here are my votes: 2 points for Duke - Brabossa's Ballad (I think this was the most unique and the best entry. Writing a poem was a great idea and also the realization was very appealing.) 2 points for greg3 - The Veteran (Also a unique entry, probably the only (serious) one not having problems with the word limit for setting the base completely different.) 1 point for Macoco - "Where's all the rum then" (This one really made me laugh. The jokes and the references are awesome!) 1 point for operrier - Rescue on the Imperial Flagship (This one also had some funny lines with great references as well.) 1 point for blackpyre - Jack Sparrow can't escape the Classics (Nice usage of words, though not making it to complicated (for a foreigner) and an interesting ending.) I regret I didn't have time to write some more reviews or comments lately. First the holidays and then too much work. Can't be at all the places at once ... Good luck to everyone! -
I too found this scene quite boring. I just watched the movie recently and I'm glad I did. Else I'd be giving wrong comments since I had the civil crowd in mind, but that was from the first movie in a similar situation. The scene is really well captured and I agree that the floor need repairing to be more even. I presume you build the wall and tower in black because of lack of bricks, but it'd really look better in dark or light gray. I also find the people too colorful especially the red in the soldiers legs and mixing redcoats and bluecoats. Also since the gallows is the main object in the scene I'd put a bit more detail into it in your place. The top bar should be thinner, adding the stairs and some trap doors would really improve the look of it. Also I miss the executioner that was present in the movies!

Good job, though as already mentioned I'm not too fond of LDD MOCs especially as competition entries. I also do not like the head from behind. It only looks as a mouth holder and does not give the squid-ish long body look. As mentioned the LDD gives you far greater possibilities regarding the piece count so I'd make the MOC a bit bigger, lengthen the head-body and make longer tentacles - since you're not limited with the bricks! The design of the mouth is nice and also the detail of the ship interior is done nicely but the prior has two more problems. You were not the first, and it really misses the "WAW" factor it would get if it was a real MOC. As said everyone would be amazed at the amount of the teeth pieces! But all in all it's a great MOC clearly representing the scene, which was the contests main goal!

Interesting build! I just couldn't sleep for your connectivity problem so I gave myself a try: my attempt at pentagon Of course I only did the inner rim 30 studs long. I used the flat bending object and adjusted it's angle to 108 degrees or 72 or with minus - whatever the position is and then added the 30 stud long wall. I used the hinge only on one side and then copied that whole thing 4 times and it automatically aligned in the end ... Not sure how to do the outer tower pentagons, but it should be doable. Just some more calculations would be needed how wide the walls need to be, so everything aligns in the end! There's quite a lot of possibilities in LDD it's just so stubborn sometimes and you have to build things in a different way you imagined ...

My vessel is magnificent, and fierce, and huge-ish, and…gone. Why is
MstrOfPppts replied to Lego lover's topic in Pirate MOCs
I presume this was the last minute entry but anyway the lack of detail is quite disturbing. If this was the real LEGO creation it would be acceptable by having in mind you might not have enough pieces. But making it in LDD gives you far greater possibilities especially for the unlimited pieces you can use. Even for a LDD beginner this entry looks pretty rushed and somehow unfinished though it clearly represents the scene from the movie. The idea on the contrary to the MOC is brilliant! Anyway you made quite a few smile if not laugh (including me) and that might have been the purpose in the first place. Also the Black Pearl is a nice detail and stands out a lot! I also welcome your courage to enter and display this little creation, I think it's goal was reached. Take all the previous critics into consideration and start creating some real good MOCs. I know it takes a lot of time, but it's fun and the feelings after finishing and showing one are very pleasant. Happy MOCing! -
Another interesting entry. The lack of original POTC figures does really not matter a lot here, since the custom made ones are pretty accurate! I especially like Sao Feng and the ladies behind him. Though one's hair is a bit displaced ... The floor is nicely done and the bucket and captured Will is by my opinion the cherry on the top. however I'd change the walls especially the ones behind Sao. The wall made of stones did not have any gaps, only through the roof one could see outside. I think using some dark plates behind the walls just for taking the images would help and would not make this MOC look so WIPy ... Don't get me wrong, the way the walls are done really add to the detail of this MOC and the techniques are admirable. It's just that one can see the sky through the walls that bothers me.

Hey, I finally have some time after my holiday to do some reviews of the later entries. Sorry I couldn't have done it earlier, since this can't help you improve the build. But anyway, this is an interesting entry and very one of a kind. I rally didn't expect any large scale models appearing here. I've been building some of large scale minifigs when I was younger, so I really know how painful it is to build something that huge without running out of bricks. Especially if your collection is not huge! Therefore I will not talk about colors of the clothes which are obviously off, but are still recognizable. I must say I like the way you build this model and I especially like the mast and the flag! However I'm not too fond of the head, since it looks too much like the cube dudes LEGO does. Have in mind that those figures are much smaller and therefore lack the detail. This on however I think could be done better if you started with a flat face and point out the nose and then surround it with hair and some other facial detail. I also miss the hat which Jack hasn't lost by the time yet! Anyway, good luck in the remaining days of voting!

Small LDD contest - [FINAL RESULTS]
MstrOfPppts replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
This is a cool contest. I am always amazed at what some people can come up with so limited amount and shape of pieces! So I decided to give it a go and created: Deep Jungle Totem And the .lxf file Hope you like it and good luck to everyone! -
@Aanchir: Sorry mate, I can still not agree with you. And don't go mixing two different things. Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece and therefor you can't say a ten years old kid could have done it. But sadly that is not the case of this set. Anyway for example if we change the kid to 15 years, is that still humiliating? I remember myself putting together more complicated things than this when I was that age, although it was my dark ages. The thing is I really do understand that the set creators have a lot of experience and education. Therefor even more is expected from them. The least thing they could do is the set to look attractive. I understand that caricaturization of an actual thing is required to build in the minifig scale but it can still be done better. The QAR is a great example. For example actual QAR has far less bones and none of them are actually white. But the creator of this set really has put a lot of effort into it. He made it completely different from the actual ship in color scheme and in some shapes. But look, the ship is still recognizable and on top of that looks good. For my taste it's the best LEGO ship ever! It also has the best figure composition possible that fits the movies and gives you enough people to be able to sail the ship. There could of course be more, but we really don't expect that from LEGO ... But I do agree on the note of price range and things concerning the piece count. Still my thoughts are, it could have been done better. Your saying that the BBs back isn't detailed. It might not be the best, but 5 colors, bigger windows, golden studs, crossed cutlasses and a flag does make it a lot more impressive then the Black Pearls plain black stern. Take this picture for example and you'll clearly see at least 3 mayor mistakes in the set. I'm not talking about the windows count, because I'll take that as a part of caricaturization. But still LEGO could have done some new molds since these windows clearly don't fit this set. The only way to make them fit is to use the arcs which disables them of being less then two studs apart! But the mayor problem is the height of the cabin. In the picture it's clearly seen how far from water the cabin starts. Also the supporters for windows could be a really nice touch but with the cabin so low, there is no space for them. Last but not least, the greenish top is a very nice detail on this ship, which completely makes it not so black only. It could easily be done with some green colored feathers as by imperial flag ship. Also it's LEGO's own fault they didn't want to make an extra mold for the back of the new ships and in this case it hurts them a lot. but even using the second black piece under the cabin to make it similar to QAR, plus all the above mentioned changes would not increase the piece count by more then 20, but would significantly change the look of the ship and add to recognition! Because of the low cabin, for me it still looks like an old western engine with sails instead of wheels. At the end of the day this really is a toy, but I think LEGO should listen to the AFOL community a bit more. After all we're the ones spending a lot more money and some for over 50 years, compared to children, who get a few sets a year and only for about 10 years. For example in a past year when I restarted collecting LEGO I almost doubled my collection and was getting a quite some LEGO as a kid. And even for kids, it's not like anything they'd produce is good for them! Of course opinions have to be said for something to change and this is, I think, the best place to place them. I am a LEGO Pirate fan and will still buy this ship. After all it has quite some interesting pieces in black, the sails and of course the minifigs! But sadly it will not stand displayed as the other ships are, but will get modded or just brought to pieces used for MOCing.

Saying that the design is similar to a 10 year old boys MOC is not as insulting as it is critical! Otherwise it is insulting for a 10 year old boy as well. Who sais that those MOCs can't be good - maybe even better than this ship. Just look at the most recent pictures from the back - who can't build that? A straight black wall with no whatsoever decoration or detail! I'm afraid to look even lower, where the mast touches the water. I think they're using new little arcs instead of the bigger ones (same piece count) and it looks bulky, unfinished and rushed at edges. At least from the perspectives we get in current images. As already mentioned plenty of times I'm really afraid there's no second wave and that the ship was just designed for beeing announced earlier. The reasons to me are unknown but I still believe they had plenty of better solutions. From using more pieces, delaying the arrival of the set to postponing it to next year and making the interceptor istead! That way you get a 90ish € ship this year and the same size as QAR BP next year! The comment that makes me bitter is a protective comment for a thing that is clearly bad. I mean look at all the 18 pages thread out of which 90% are criticism and disagreeings with this set. I know that noone is perfect and also LEGO can't do everything right but one thing is a fact: they f***ed up with this one ... I mean we all are adults here and we all understand what is meant by each word even if sometimes they are too harsh, noone is insulting nobody or wishing anyone any bad! The problem of this set is that LEGO rarely makes mistakes and all of other POTC sets were designed so cool, that noone can go past this set without getting a grim expression on his face. This is just like Blizzard would create an average or even worse game after so many hits they have!

Pirates of the Caribbean Contest - MOC Forum Division Voting
MstrOfPppts replied to Mister Phes's topic in Pirate MOCs
I finally found some time to go through all the entries and post my votes, so here they are: 3 points for Matn - Tia Dalma's Shack 2 points for Fat Tony - Where's the rest of the crew? 1 point for Yatkuu - Encounter at the blacksmith workshop 1 point for hammelgeier - Attack of the Kraken Of course there's quite some more interesting entries, but these four stand out for my taste. Good luck everyone in the competition! -
I have no idea what you are talking about. Apart from this image being of higher resolution and with no white printing on it, the ship looks exactly the same and still dissapointing. As I've said before, this is about how much sets change from preliminary pictures to the actual set ...
