Interview with LEGO VP of Design Matthew James Ashton
Lyichir replied to The_Chosen_1's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It could refer to ones meant for release in the summer, like Benny's spaceship. Or it could refer to planned sets for one of these two waves that were cancelled (surely there must have been things put into the movie as potential sets that didn't test well with focus groups or had to be nixed for other reasons). But of course, there is the option for Lego to release further sets in future years. Whether or not the business case works will depend on a number of factors, not least of which is how sales of the existing sets hold up after the movie leaves theaters, is released on DVD, and on into the holiday season. -
Well, the lack of an evil lair (another staple of secret agent stories) is somewhat disappointing. But perhaps if this theme continues for another wave, we'll get one? I don't know. Normally I'm all for vehicle-heavy themes, but I do admit I loved the environmental features of the original Agents theme, including the entire Volcano Base but also the roadblock in 8634 Turbocar Chase as well as the floating platform in 8633 Speedboat Rescue. I'm not all that excited about this theme. With its lack of a unifying theme for the villains it feels more like the 2009 Agents 2.0 than the 2008 Agents sets, which were my favorites due to their overarching narrative. The sets this year are still great, and in a leaner year I'd be all for them, but with amazing lineups for Ninjago, Hero Factory, and The Lego Movie, it's going to be hard to find space in my budget for this theme.

Explain Hero Factory / action figures like I'm a total newbie
Lyichir replied to jFox's topic in LEGO Action Figures
The most useful parts (in my opinion) are the ones that most effectively allow you to connect beams and shells in to larger constructions in unique ways. 98590: The most compact torso piece. Loads of attachment points over a small area. With multiples and the requisite bone pieces, you can create larger or more unique torso designs. 98577: The most compact way to securely attach a shell to a Technic beam of any sort. 90634: Great for attaching additional beams, either to add limbs or to fill out the shape of a larger torso construction. 90630: Another part that's great for attaching additional beams to torsos or limbs. Bones and shells are of course necessary to use these parts to their maximum potential, but those are more common in sets. Pick sets with the sorts of colors you want to use, and take note of which sets have longer or shorter limbs so as to get the kind of beams and shells you need. Keep an eye out for 90622 in particular, as it's great for attaching multiple torso beams together. -
I'm pretty sure from the pictures that that's exactly what the cocoons are like. That way, like the Brains, the Technic connection on them can be firm and secure.

I think it's hilarious and especially fitting for his system counterpart (being a bigfig, he is literally hu-Mungus). It's bizarre that they would give such an imposing character such a comparably small Chi form, though. Why not just choose one of the smaller Mammoths?
-
It's the former. I was surprised when I skimmed through it while waiting for the raffle winners to be announced at the Toys R Us event and found that the movie's big twist was omitted entirely. On the one hand, it's good that they didn't spoil it in the novelisation, especially since it came out a good deal before the actual movie. On the other hand, it removes a lot of the movie's punch and makes Emmet's return seem awfully contrived.

Future The LEGO Movie Sets - Wishlist
Lyichir replied to Sir Brickalot's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The double-decker couch comes in the Sea Cow that releases for VIPs on the 17th of this month. Angry Kitty (normal scale, at least) comes with Emmet's Construct-o-mech, due out in August. There are still a few options for sets from this movie (such as the Super Secret Police Copper Chopper or another Western set with Bad Cop's "police horse"). But I fear that the summer sets will be the last we'll see of this movie until the sequel. And no telling what that might include (although if it keeps the same characters, maybe we might finally get a smile out of the reformed President Business). -

He's talking about set rereleases, not new versions of the same subject. For instance, you may see a Western fort if Lego ever makes a new Western theme, but it won't be Fort Legoredo. It'll be an entirely new design made to appeal to the kids of today. -
...and the windscreen. And the way the sides fold up. And the rotating side-mounted thrusters. And the prison cell. In fact, once you get past the general shape, you find that they're completely different sets! Who'd have thought?

LEGO parts made of Chinese plastic?
Lyichir replied to Henchmen4Hire's topic in General LEGO Discussion
They're not, and nothing we've seen suggests that. They are absolutely not closing all of their other worldwide factories. What they ARE doing is building their own factory there, to better provide for Asian markets, and to have a factory in China that they themselves own and operate. If anything that should mean better quality than the current Chinese production facilities, not worse. -
A decent start, but to make him truly movie-accurate he still needs some more changes. Most noticeably, you need to swap the gears on his shoulders for the crown gears used in the movie.

The "photocopying your butt" joke is an old one, and gains something in Lego due to the standardized butt all minifigures share. And if that wasn't enough, Metalbeard sealed the deal. I don't think that joke suffered at all from a lack of originality.

"Summer sets" and "Winter sets" are pretty much misnomers. They refer to the period in which the sets come out, not the period in which they are available. By the time summer sets come out in August, summer is almost over in the Northern Hemisphere, and they become the most reliably available sets in the lead-up to Christmas (and the first items on many kids' Christmas lists).

That I think is a key point of Friends. It's no less constructive or deep than other Lego themes. So why does the marketing make it seem as inane as things like Barbie? Because Lego is trying to appeal to the girls who don't already buy Lego—that is to say, the ones who head straight for the "pink aisle" when visiting the toy store, bypassing Lego altogether. It's a pragmatic approach; by dressing its toys up in the colors of stereotypical "girls' toys", Lego can infiltrate a market that they've had little luck in in the past and show them "the beauty of building". And so far it's worked magnificently, making Friends into one of Lego's top-selling themes. This is why I give little credence to criticisms of the Friends theme from non-FOL feminists. Social justice is important, but from a business perspective, revolutionary change is a recipe for poor sales—and an equality-based agenda in a toyline doesn't do girls any good if they don't buy the product. As an AFOL, I'm of the opinion that any Lego is a more educational and constructive toy for girls than typical dolls or "fashion toys", so if Lego has to make their toys look like these other products to get more girls to buy their products, I'm all for it.

I think it is an indoor mall. It just isn't completely enclosed in the set because it's easier to play with that way. Imagine a glass canopy (like an arcade) over the central bits and you'll get the picture.

It was extremely hard to tell the Micro Managers apart. In the first scene with one, it seemed to be different from any of the ones in sets (most similar to the one from Rescue Reinforcements, but bigger). Most other scenes had more than one, so without being able to pause or rewind it was hard to discern which ones matched which sets (if any).

I don't see why gender is so important for them. As far as I'm concerned, they're all weird monster things. I'd be just as happy if none of them used gendered pronouns.

Spoiler - Lego Movie sets and film comparison with spoilers
Lyichir replied to SMC's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I think I saw the Blacktron fan in The Coffee Chain early in the movie. That bothered me, too. He does so much evil laughing and the like in the movie, but there's no face in sets to represent that. It seems like a missed opportunity. -

The gears on his shoulders are also crown gears in the movie. And I think there's a third, smaller cannon on his cannon arm. -

The most significant version of a character that hasn't yet appeared "in the brick" is probably Vitruvius in his actual wizard garb, with an actual magic staff, before being blinded. I would not be surprised if he shows up as an exclusive fig for the DVD/Blu-Ray release. -
The fact that the leaf elements are angled in such a way to make the tree look more full and verdant than typical Lego trees (at least, those that typically appear in sets).

Lego Movie Western Emmet (Game Stop pre-order exclusive)
Lyichir replied to Solscud007's topic in Special LEGO Themes
"Bang bang! Shoot shoot! Bullet bullet bullet!" I got this fig today. Haven't opened him yet. -
I just played through the first level of the 3DS version and was pretty disappointed. In fact, I feel a little bit cheated, since the Gamestop employee who sold me on the preorder assured me that the handheld versions of the Lego video games were just as good as the home console versions these days—and unless my memory of games like Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman are clouded by nostalgia, this game clearly fails that test by being only slightly better than the Game Boy Advance or Nintendo DS Lego games. I'm going to see if I can make a return, but their returns policy explicitly states that they don't refund you for games that have been opened, so I don't have high hopes.
