NEW LDD Brickset out - 1392
Lyichir replied to Lyichir's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I have experience but can't give you a lot of advice. Working with those sorts of hinges is hell in LDD and a lot of it (for me at least) has been trial and error, at least when I'm working with complex angles. I can suggest you try the up and down arrow buttons next to the angle values; while these still run into the issues you're mentioning, they allow for fine-tuning of complex angles by about one degree at a time. -
NEW LDD Brickset out - 1392

I don't think so. There aren't a lot of new torso decorations from what I can tell, apart from indexing the CMF decorations to the part so they can be selected in the program. Unless there are new unindexed decorations, but I have no way of knowing that. I wouldn't hold out for a single-set licensed torso anyway, given the history of new decorations in past updates. I think they try to stick to more universally-applicable designs, and we've only gotten a few licensed decorations at all. -
NEW LDD Brickset out - 1392
Lyichir replied to Lyichir's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
For reference, it's actually the same version of LDD, but a new brick version (1392). I shared this on Facebook and have had to explain why it wasn't working for some people, which was already frustrating because I don't know, and it wasn't helped by my little brother spamming stuff from an old, hacked LDD version that he had glitched out, confusing everyone further. All I can say is I hope the rest of you get it by tomorrow! -
NEW LDD Brickset out - 1392

Okay, one last note on the update. While I'm not sure what sort of new decorations there are and am not about to check every part to find out, I can confirm that all three types of Mixels eyes (1x1 round, 2x2 round, and Bionicle ball joint) are there! -
My LDD is updating as we speak! For some reason, my brother's isn't, though. Will edit this post once I have some idea of what the update contains! EDIT: I don't have LDD Manager so I can't tell all of what's new, but so far I have some old Bionicle parts, some new Hero Factory parts, and the Mixels joints! EDIT 2: New hair galore—Lego Movie, Ninja Turtles, The Hobbit, Disney Princess, and more! EDIT 3: Headgear too—Hero Factory, Star Wars, Ninjago, Super Heroes, Chima, Lego Movie, Hobbit, maybe others I missed. EDIT 4: HF Minifig parts! Lego Movie beards and moustaches! EDIT 5: Accessories—Princess, Lego Movie, Chima, City, and probably more! EDIT 6: Firing blasters and old magnets! EDIT 7: Mixels teeth, Unikitty tail, new plants, and Metalbeard's metal beard! EDIT 8: Loads of new Technic! EV3! EDIT 9: Juniors parts! EDIT 10: For Gnac: No new wheels other than the Princess ones to my knowledge, but the Vespa, HF cylinders, and EV3 rubber tread attachments are all in the wheels category. EDIT 11: Round tiles with holes! Bowls! EDIT 12: Corner tiles! Cross plates! Juniors bases! EDIT 13: 2x2x2/3 curved slopes! 4x8x2/3 curved slopes! EDIT 14: And last but not least, the piece of resistance, 1x4 masonry bricks, and a bunch of large '90s brick bases!

Something happening, or is it just me?
Lyichir replied to Lyichir's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Well, it's back to normal now, so I guess it was nothing. This topic can probably be closed now. -
Hey all. I know it may or may not be anything important, but my LDD hasn't been able to connect to the internet all afternoon. Has this been the case for anyone else? My heart hopes that it's a sign that an LDD update is imminent, but for all I know it's just a problem that affects only myself (although if it is, not sure what could've caused it; I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary on LDD or the internet today, and my other programs seem to connect just fine). Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

A closer look at Emmets apartment building
Lyichir replied to Super Goblin's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Part of what I was trying to do was make it different from the Town Hall (since initially I was hoping to put it on Cuusoo). The way I had it laid out if I kept the Town Hall's elevator it would have cut into valuable living room/kitchen space. -
If you're talking about this train, they weren't. That was a snake version of the Emerald Night that was built solely to conceptualize how regular vehicles would turn into snake versions (and was shown at a Lego convention, not a toy fair). While it's possible that the mobile fortress from the show was based on this, I doubt it since this model is clearly a steam engine, and regardless of whether there's a connection, this model was never intended to become a set in the first place. Back to the topic of discussion... While I seriously doubt Lego is going to go back and make old Ninjago subjects into sets unless they have a prominent role in the proposed movie, there's still the chance that we could see some more sets based on locations from this year if there are unannounced Ninjago store exclusives or a Direct to Consumer set. The latter's what I'm hoping for—specifically, I want a set of Borg Tower, which featured plenty of interesting scenes (like the falling elevator, the Nindroid factory, and of course Cyrus Borg's office). It'd also be an ideal set for including Nya's new costume (which is a unique design but hasn't appeared yet in sets) and possibly Cyrus Borg's pre-Overlord design. I'd also love a Ninjago Minifigures series to tie in with the movie, which could easily feature old secondary characters like the Mailman, Captain Soto, or Misako if they have so much as a cameo in the movie. I don't follow the Chima show so I can't make any suggestions in regard to that.

A closer look at Emmets apartment building
Lyichir replied to Super Goblin's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I got stuck/lost interest about when I got to where I had to add the bathroom. I could conceivably fit it into the building but doing so would eliminate too much of the space I had allocated for the stairs. And while it would be possible to relocate some things to other floors, I think doing so would stretch suspension of disbelief (after all, despite not knowing what other apartments would be like, if they're not there it would lose the impression of an apartment building). It's also hard to make some rooms look right–for instance, the bedroom as I have it currently has a window behind the bed (on the back of the building), which shouldn't be there. And its placement means that unless I make a false wall blocking the window, the wall behind the bed is also the wrong color. I don't have much in the way of furnishings yet, apart from a few shelves and a single-decker couch. I would like to see what you have, though, so that I can see if any of what I have could benefit your design! -
That's a throwing arm from the Throwbots (US)/Slizers (EU) theme, which predated Bionicle. This particular color comes in 8504 Jet (Judge Slizer in countries other than the U.S.). Here's the Bricklink page for that part.

That's already out, actually, and wasn't originally used as female hair—it's Sensei Garmadon's hairpiece from this year's Ninjago sets, which itself is just a slightly redesigned version of the old Clone Wars Anakin hairpiece. Still, I can't complain—there are too few gray hairpieces suitable for both genders, and too few dark gray hairpieces whatsoever. I spent the better part of this morning building part of this set on LDD (the truck with the mixer) and am very impressed. The mixer is a fantastic build (being based on a triangular axis rather than a square one helps), and the truck is quite impressive as well (the inclusion of a sleeper elevated it from just being a decent truck model at a scale large enough to carry the mixer to being perhaps one of the coziest big rigs we've had in a set). From the designer video, the other parts look great too—the inclusion of a dunk tank and strongman is brilliant, but the fact that they both work like they would in real life only makes them that much cooler. I agree with some others that visually, it's less impressive visually than the Grand Carousel, but that's no surprise—a temporary ride such as this would typically look much more barebones than a permanent or semi-permanent carousel like the Grand Carousel in real life as well.

The only question of yours I can answer is the first. I don't think there are any other sets like that yet, but Benny's Spaceship, due out in June, will have a code plate according to official images, and I can only assume it will be used with the game.

Will "Bulk Bricks" packs ever come back?
Lyichir replied to Inzane's topic in General LEGO Discussion
While I don't foresee such packs ever coming back, if they did I would definitely hope for some of the new Friends colors. What I would do with hundreds of Medium Lavender bricks and plates... unfortunately for me, while a lot of sets have the parts none of them have both the variety and the quantity I'd need to effectively use them as parts packs. -
Winterfell? That's an AWESOME name. Why would you call it the north when you could call it winterfell?

My bad, I forgot. Oh well. As much as I would love to, my only computer is a Macbook and unfortunately, LDD2POVRay doesn't exist for Mac (nor does POVRay itself, for that matter. And LDD still hasn't updated with the new Ninja costumes (complete with new hair and masks) for that matter. In any case, I'm just about ready to close the book on this project. The new rules for Lego Ideas (the successor to Lego Cuusoo) include deleting any projects that fail to reach the threshold in a year, and there's no way this will make it in time. The good news is that if I decide to redesign the project afterward, I could tailor it to the current year's sets instead of keeping it vague (although again, that possibility is predicated on getting access to higher-level rendering software, having LDD update with new parts in a timely manner instead of waiting until almost summer for parts from first quarter sets, and other considerations I haven't even gotten to a state to bother with yet).

What's your favorite Hero Factory XL set ?
Lyichir replied to Legofan225's topic in LEGO Action Figures
If we're limiting our scope to just sets with XL in the name... Evo XL Machine for sure. While not a traditional "XL" hero, it's a great deal more creative and unique than Furno XL, Rocka XL, or even Stormer XL, and it looks great to boot. If we're including all larger-than-medium-sized sets... probably a toss-up between Evo XL Machine, Witch Doctor, and Dragon Bolt. Furno and Rocka XL were both somewhat underwhelming, Fire Lord's color scheme was all over the place, Jet Rocka had a decent jetpack but an underwhelming figure, and I really can't judge the two larger summer sets this year yet. -
Best computer spec?
Lyichir replied to grum64's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I've been working with LDD on my MacBook, and have generally been satisfied. It easily runs LDD on the highest graphics settings, although I haven't made any models large enough to push the polygon limit so no idea how big I can build on it. It does sometimes run a little hot when I'm running LDD alongside another CPU heavy task like watching internet videos (such as looking at upcoming set videos from Toy Fair and trying to build on LDD), and I have had LDD crash on occasion when I try to use a complex tool like the flex tool or hinge-align tool on a larger model, or when I don't allow the brick palettes time to load before trying to move a part. The biggest drawback, as someone else stated, is the inability to extend the use of LDD with programs such as LDD2PovRAY. Very few fan-created Lego programs are developed for Mac, unfortunately. -
LEGO® CUUSOO 空想 - Turn your model wishes into reality
Lyichir replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Well, I doubt the Lego movie sequel will focus on one theme any more than the first movie did, and Warner Bros. is technically only signed for one sequel (although if they wanted to make it a trilogy they've still got plenty of time to extend the license). I do think that the Lego Movie sequel would make a more compelling case for a remolded Classic Space helmet (since it's true that we might see some of Benny's friends and family), but I wouldn't put money on a full Classic Space reboot, or even a retooled helmet, just yet. While this Cuusoo proposal shows promise, we haven't even seen what elements of it have made it to the final model yet, so it's too early to tell what ideas will be discarded and what ideas could be expanded into a full theme. -
I've been working on one of those on LDD too! It's much harder though. The setting is less conducive to holiday imagery (with more of a tropical flavor to the plants, and less humanlike architecture and customs), it's more difficult to split days between at least five completely different tribes, and scaling down animal-like vehicles is much harder to do while making them recognizeable. Currently I've got six figures (Laval, Cragger, Eris, Razar, Worriz, and Gorzan), each with a sort of "shrine" that stores their signature weapon. I've also tried to make a distinctly-Chima tree for day 24, but while I have an idea of which parts I want to use (the 1x1 plate with horizontal tooth in lime and dark green for foliage and a golden Chi crystal on top), actualizing the design has proven much more challenging. It's probably better that I focus on the Ninjago one anyway; it's at 70 supports, and it'd be great if I could get it to at least 100 so I can get some official Cuusoo feedback.

Most wanted bricks for next LDD update
Lyichir replied to Superkalle's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The part number to search for is 64727. It's in the last category (animal parts) of LDD extended mode. It's also available in several colors in basic LDD mode, but Nougat is not one of them. -
Where do you see The LEGO Group in the future?
Lyichir replied to Creatorman's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It doesn't currently, and even once the technology is capable of matching Lego's quality, there's no telling whether fan-designed or printed bricks will necessarily reflect the quality and safety standards Lego aims for in their own bricks. It'll be interesting to see what effects there will be on the secondhand Lego market when 3D printing becomes available to the majority of consumers. -
List the Female Minifigure Leaders
Lyichir replied to Mister Phes's topic in General LEGO Discussion
This is a common argument and one that I think deserves a refutation. Yes, Lego is a creative medium and one that is easily customizable. But Lego puts an awful lot of work into the stories behind their themes, and it's for a reason—the theme's pre-packaged story and characters are a jumping-off point for builders (especially kids) to draw inspiration from for their own creations. Yet, as this topic is revealing, these pre-formed stories only rarely include female figs in leadership roles (at least compared to their male counterparts). And girls and boys alike often want figs that they can relate to. Yes, a girl can swap Brickbeard's head with that of the female Pirate crewmate if she wants the captain to be a girl like her—but why should she be forced to change her figs around while a boy doesn't have to change a thing? The importance of diversity in Lego's themes only becomes more important in themes like Ninjago which have a heavy media component. A girl can put Nya's head on one of the Ninja, but that doesn't change what the Ninja look or act like in the TV show or graphic novels. In themes such as these, minifigures represent discrete characters, so while crafting your own characters and story is still possible it can put your story at odds with the one your classmates and friends are watching on TV and discussing at recess. There's absolutely nothing wrong with disassembling your figs and creating your own characters. But there's nothing wrong with leaving your figs together as the characters they were designed to be either. For this reason it's worth considering whether Lego's female fans are given as much choice between the two, or whether they're unfairly forced to do the former just to represent themselves in the themes they like most.
