I've said this twice before but if TLG didn't **** themselves so hard by developing a 4-port smart hub and instead went for 6 ports, it could be done with five motors, each with a two position gearbox. That way gives you two modes of operation - drive and backhoe: Motor 1 - drive wheels or backhoe boom Motor 2 - MLA steering or backhoe knuckle Motor 3 - lift arm or backhoe stick Motor 4: bucket tilt or backhoe swing Motor 5: gearbox and stabilizers But nope, now we're stuck with four ports forever...

I think playability was prioritised for this over realism. I wonder whether we're clutching pearls over a name -
No, I stand by what I said. I think the way you've expressed your criticism of the set is ridiculous to the point of absurdity, especially the "I would not buy this, even for kids" bit. You'd deny a child the joy of playing with a toy and learning about its other parts, like rear wheel steering, or the moving spout, or the raising attachment, because one of the details spins the wrong way. If you're willing to express your opinion so intensely in a public forum and break down the moment it's challenged, that's on you.

The shock at the rear axle -
I can't read this with a straight face, what you've said is so hilariously ridiculous. It's a toy. If you're complaining about education, then what's important here is that the parts spin, not which direction they spin in this specific model by this specific manufacturer. You're complaining about trivia, not education.

Plaster probably not, but buy some white clay and reinforce it with steel mesh, then oven bake it. I dunno the details but I assume it'd work pretty well. Also don't use lead, but pewter. It's a not as dense as lead (~7 vs 11 g/cm3) but the melting point is much lower (~200 vs 327 C) and it's far less toxic and more durable. Alternatively (and likely cheaper) make a silicone mould and then cast some resin counterweights with a bunch of lead shot, then paint over the finished pieces.
