  1. I bought mine for a pretty good price, ive already made a deal to move it on for that same price, so at least im not losing any money. Ill be more critical of sets like these in the future though, i can see myself bothering with all sorts of rebuilds and fixes for the Sian, but im not buying big sets just for the technic build without serious vetting, it seems like these 2000+ part monsters are really stretching the limits on technic, and for some reason tend to always contain some flaws which just shouldnt be there.
  2. @thekoRngear Dont worry too much about it, i bought the set because i expected a porsche/bugatti level complexity build, and wanted to experience that. I dont really care much for the final result, as im very much a supercar guy, not an ofroad guy. Thinking about that yesterday made me realize that if i want a good build, the defender isnt that out of the box, i enjoyed the rear axle and gearbox (the gearchance is excellent), but the front axle and rest of the drivetrain is just poorly designed. I realize i can complete the build, but the rest of the build is just cosmetics, and in the case of a defender, cosmetics i dont care for. @agrof I considered that, and the driveline looks a lot better, but in the end i probably wont put the defender on display, i already have more pieces for that than i can actually show of. I dont feel like putting more effort and money (for the extra parts) into fixing a fundamentally flawed design.
  3. yeah, my conclusion right now is that the final bit of drivetrain, the engine and the monstrous amount of gears right in front of it, just have too much friction for the front of the drivetrain to handle it with a high ratio on the gearbox in the middle. Im not sure why there is too much friction, i dont see any obvious errors on my part, but fixing this would require me to tear down and rebuild the front half of the chassis, im definitely not happy about that, my mind keeps wandering off to selling the bloody thing and forgetting about the lambo.
  4. @thekoRngear Ive also seen people mention the drivetrain behaving differently once the body is built on, right now ive got a bare chassis with relatively low rigidity, so perhaps the extra bodywork and bracing might solve it, then again, ill ve even more pissed off when it is still broken after finishing it. Ive done some investigating, and from what i can tell, it is the tan gear/LBG gear mesh which sits left of the two U-joints in the middle of the car which skips if i really force it through its resistance. KBalage mentions this mesh in his fix video due to the connector perhaps not holding the tan gear down enough, but for me it is 100% in place. Ive also checked the U-joint allignments on the two driveshafts, and even alligned the U joints with the CV joints on the wheel driveshafts. I think the blockage is in the place of gears right behind the engine, but im not sure just yet, i think some kind of flex in the structure is also a factor, since without load it all rotates relatively freely. Im really torn here, i dont want to complete the build and find out the thing is still broken, and i dont like the drivetrain design from a technical standpoint either, but scrapping it all and starting over kida sucks too.
  5. Well, another notch in the "driveline problems" column for me :( Im nearing the end up step 2, and ive got the driveline finished, but in some gears the damn thing is a reverse pullback racer, while others work fine-ish (still some kracking, but no extreme resistance). Personally i think that while the driveline complexity is extremely impressive, selling a set like this, where a builder will frequently experience issues with the core functions is a bit iffy on lego's side. Us AFOLs can discus this stuff, but someone who isnt familiar with the community will just get frustrated. I think ill put a halt on construction for now, see if i can get it running smoothly, or just go for the alternative driveline from the pimp my defender project
  6. discussion about whether it is or isnt a military vehicle aside, i think this looks really cool. I just hope it doesnt require a smartphone app to run. (im looking for a bigish complex technic set to build together with my 9 year old kid, she doesnt, and wont in the near future, own a smartphone.)
  7. yeah, the part count is quite high, and there is sooo much more detail and extra function compared to 42036, which went for 40 bucks MSRP Which reminds me, off to bricklink to see if the parts are listed already, my 42036 will need some upgrades to keep up with the real Duc
  8. quite, honestly i dont care tbh, this set is cheap enough that im not bothering with waiting for a substantial discount, anything above 100 euros i will wait for 20% off at least, this though.. no point in waiting for months just for a few euros.
  9. Well, i was expecting it to take a while before i could get my hands on it, turns out our amazon equivalent had it for sale already, and with a tasty 4 euro discount no less! Should be delivered to my door tomorrow even!
  10. Man, you guys live on the other side of the globe from denmark and can pick this thing up in your local supermarket (or is K mart more of a walmart type thing?), and here i am, less then 1000km from billund and i know ill have to wait probably another two weeks before i can buy this thing, lego is weird man.
  11. Buy it, build it, then mod it to suit your taste, job jobbed. I do appreciate that there is no easy way to make your own accurate gearbox internals (i doubt 3 printing has come far enough in terms of tolerances), but you could easily build a new driveline more suited to motorisation, you could even make it RWD only TBH, or this might be an interesting case to see if Sariels 4 speed torque sensing auto works for getting a big heavy car moving for instance. Im not trying to say you should spend huge amounts of money on something you dont like, but with these big technic sets, IMHO, the way it comes out of the box is just the starting point for the next phase of AFOL set ownership, modding it, tweaking it, and making it so that it ends up the way you like it.
  12. Well, without sounding pedantic, what did you expect? minor problems aside, the Chirons layout was correct, and considering the drivetrain on the Chiron and Sian are pretty much the same (mid rear engine, AWD), you would end up with the same sort of chassis. Now if lego has managed to work out some of the backlash and fix the sagging suspension, that is about as much as anyone could hope for, short of them designing a while slew of new bespoke gearbox internals solely for this car. Im trying not to delve into too much of the details, to keep my mind semi unspoiled for when i build it, but chassis/driveline wise, if it is indeed pretty much a tweaked chiron underneath, the only complaint i would have is a lack of some sort of hybrid system.
  13. more details and more complex features, the Chiron has 4 extra gears, a more finished interior and i think the exterior is built up out of more smaller parts. The Chirons back end (axle, gearbox and engine) felt incredibly dense when building it, more so then the porsche
  14. 3599 for the chiron vs 3696 for the Sian The porsche was somewhere around 2700 i think, but that was a lot cheaper
  15. Regarding the price, im positively surprised that over here it is "only" 379, the porsche and bugatti both got a 30 euro pricebump compared to germany I think around 300 is going to be my "buy now" price, that is what i got the Chiron for, and waiting for lower will eventually pan out, but it will take a long time. This thing is going to look amazing on display, i fear the Chiron might end up looking a bit pedestrian next to this lime-green viper of a hypercar
  16. The same thing can be said about tons of previous technic sets, pretty much every set has something it builds on, and is only a marginal step up from in terms of features. If they fixed the suspension setup in this design, and reduced the gearbox backlash significantly, ill be one happy camper, even if there are no real new featues (and honestly, its not like the chiron was a revolutionary design) The sheer amount of work of building the chiron out of one big pile is part of what is keeping me from pimping it, i did the porsche in pimp spec straight away, and honestly, i like it better then the chiron currently, as the features work better, and it has more detail. Im stuck with the same dilemma on the defender...
  17. Am i the only one who is terribly amused by the fact they made the carbon fibre x brace on top of the engine out of freaking flex axles? Otherwise it all looks good, should be an entertaining build and one hell of a display piece
  18. That leaked pic looks good, the colour makes me wonder if someone will do a Huracan B-model, the Huracan looks the business in "verde mantis" Im quite curious about what features etc.. they packed in there
  19. I havent really paid much attention to the volvo, as i dont really care to much about that kind of machinery, but it is kind of odd dragging likeness to licensed machines into a "i dont like modern technic" argument, considering that just a few years ago, licensed sets pretty much didnt happen, we couldnt complain about how a set like 42000 didnt have the right front wing for an F1 Ferrari, because it was a generic racecar, not licensed. So this is a new issue caused by all the licensed sets, not because TLG is paying less attention to design then they used to, we finally have a real thing to compare to. Either way, i try to take a more relaxed stance these days, TLC does what they do for their own reasons, and they probably have a better view on their market then we do, and if that takes technic into a direction where i dont like it anymore, then either ill veer off into MOCs, or just focus on another hobby. (and without trying to patronize anyone, i think a lot of people could benefit from mellowing out a bit, in the end lego is a hobby, and especially lego isnt limited by what TLC decides to put into a box, so find your own joy, and try not to worry too much about it, stress isnt good for the humand body/mind, and some ABS bricks arent worth getting worked up over)
  20. Cool, just two more days! (am i the only one here more excited about the ducati launching soon? I know the lambo will ultimately be much cooler, but with a 400 euro plus pricetag ill be waiting a bit for a deal, a 60 euro ducati though.. no point waiting for just ten bucks off)
  21. A study of how not to design a functional aeroplane? :P i kid, i just cant see past the missing elevators on that set, or rather, lake of functional wings, given that the wings are so far back and are small enough to give an F104 delusions of magnum sized wings. The creator blue power jet was a pretty example as well, everyone with half a brain will think "F-35" when looking at that set. Personally i dont think the osprey being military is a big deal, it isnt a weapon system, just a transport, and things like the Unimog and Space Shuttle have been used by the military as well (in non direct combat roles)
  22. The polybag is the same car as the huracan in the speed champiions lambo set, and was already known about long ago. Also, i think it is already 100% sure the new big technic car is indeed a lambo, the doubt some people express here is about the leaked Sian pics. So imho, the polybag adds nothing to the discussion. That said, ill keep an eye out for the top gear mag, if they have the same promo over here, ill pick it up, might be nice to read it again some time, and the polybag is a cool little thing too.
  23. regarding pushrod suspension, i dont think the "but the real car has it, so now they have to" argument holds water, there are soooo many technical inaccuracies on the GT3RS and Chiron that i dont expect any new feature to be included because the real lambo has anything.
  24. Hmm, maybe the leaker in question only had one unguarded moment for a quick shot? Maybe the rest of the box isnt all that interesting?
  25. Personally i rather like the yellow pistons over the old DG ones, the yellow flashing to the surface of the black kind of mimicks the cylinder firing.
