I agree with all of these points. I avoid things like glue too, and try to make things as beautiful as I can while maximizing functionality and the features of Lego that I love. I feel the same way about photography too—some people post amazing pictures, with rendering, etc., and I just don't seem to have the skills or time to do so!

Incredible! I have a soft spot for Lego castle of course, surrounded by Lego nature. This is truly magnificent. It's a shame stuff like this isn't made available for all to buy through Lego, for obvious reasons. But we can all admire :D -
Any guesses who these minifigs are supposed to be?
ootkaman replied to ootkaman's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Thanks! Yeah, I can't say I was surprised when Disney threw out everything except for the main movies and TV cartoons, but it was still really sad. There were so many story lines waiting to be made into movies and great ideas, such as the Thrawn stuff, these Ewok movies, and Shadows of the Empire. But after investing that money, it makes sense that Disney wants as much creative license as possible with the many, many movies etc. they plan on doing. I have a feeling we will all feel overly inundated with Star Wars in 10 years, but who knows since it hasn't seemed to happen to Marvel Nice, Christopher Lee! Coincidence seeing you on here And since these movies are getting so old, you never know what the future holds . . . -

ootkaman replied to ootkaman's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Yeah, you got it! Battle for Endor is no longer considered canon by Disney, but I would love it if they would make minifigs for Noa, Teek, and Cindel. Teek is the most important, since he requires a modified head and a unique furry look with an apron. LDD also has its limitations, but I wanted to see how close I could come to the actual characters -
I made a few minifigs in LDD of characters that I wish Lego would produce, although there is very little chance it would ever happen. Any guesses as to who they are (other than Wicket, of course)?

Very interesting insights! I like to see how everyone sees it and i am glad that we get all kinds of MOCs. I agree with a lot of what has been said. For me personally, I very much admire the highly detailed and grand MOCs but when I build my priority is playability and making a playable locale for minifigures. I also lean on the side of building things durable and solid, and putting realism to the side to have fun with special pieces that Lego has created (such as secret walls, hinges, etc.). Because of that, I think a lot of people see something classic or old in what I build. It all is a trade-off, I suppose.

I have been wondering about something for a while, and someone can give me better terminology if they know it. I was just wondering whether people preferred MOCs that were more like what Lego tends to produce vs. what many MOCers and designers do. Although this is not always true, if I had to mention some trends between each group I would say: "Traditional" designers—Make sets with less illegal connections, emphasizing playability, minifigures, economy of parts, etc. "Artistic" designers—Make sets look more realistic and detailed, often grand in scope, with a wide variety of techniques that may not emphasize playability or minifigures Of course that is not always true on either side, but I was curious which type of set castle lovers tend to enjoy more as a whole (taking into account building, playing with, investing, displaying, etc.).

Like others have said, I'm waiting to see pictures to fully decide how I feel. That being said, I was also really hoping for classic castle including more rural settings, and even perhaps some Forest Men or Dark Forest-esque sets again. I don't know if that would sell as well as NInjago or Chima-like sets nowadays, but recapturing the magic of a good castle set would get a lot of people excited for sure. What I think would be a good move if you wanted to go that route would be to have some sets in a line that were purely castle, and then others that showed steampunk or tech or whatever that matched the line, and you could combine these sets to make the storyline work with that theme. A lot to ask for, but that way you could appeal to both groups

Thank you! It's nice sometimes to have something simple to compliment the main builds

This is my fourth and final MOC revolving around Robin Hood, featuring Will Scarlet and Gamble Gold at an outpost, along with one of Prince John's soldiers. This outpost features a fake rock wall in the back which can be raised up to reveal two crates of treasure and two small barrels of food. These merry men can also raise the ladder to prevent any intruders. As with my other three Robin Hood MOCs, any feedback is much appreciated. If there is enough interest in this and my other Robin Hood MOCs, there is one more set I am considering making. This MOC is also a project on Lego Ideas. Feel free to support it here if you like it: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/110260 You can also see these and additional pictures in higher res on Flickr at https://www.flickr.c...157655824432309

Thank you! I wanted to add as many additional features as I could, to make it sort of like the Robin Hood places that are depicted in movies

Thank you! You put all of that really well. I still may accessorize it some more for an update—let me know if you have any suggestions. I will probably just include a small baseplate for the tree and Marian, and then everyone could just stand on their own (like Lego leans toward more often now). For myself, I gotta have that baseplate, but I think it is less practical from a market perspective. I appreciate the compliments. I mainly had playability in mind, and would love to see a Robin Hood theme come to Lego. That way IMO Robin Hood fans could get some cool sets, and Forestmen of Dark Forest fans can add to their collection (or both).

What should or should not be on Lego Ideas?
ootkaman replied to Wodanis's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Very interesting discussion! I also like the idea of having to get 100 submissions in a month. That fits well into the scheme that Lego already has in place, and seems like a logical amount. I wonder how much that would cut the projects down? Probably by a lot. I also think it would be helpful if Lego Ideas had more searching and filtering options, to be able to discover projects in different ways. Perhaps you could have submitters include additional information when submitting via drop down boxes, such as approx. piece count (0-50, 50-100, 100-500, etc.) or whether it is a digital or physical design. Things like that would let users control more what they sift through. Other ways of helping projects get more votes could be "most supported in the last 30 days", "highest rate of support", and so forth. I am not so sure about the Kickstarter idea, since that would make people pay and then wait a long time to get refunds. It would also discourage voters, so Lego would probably have to drop the amount of supporters needed. -
Thank you for your feedback! I just might do that, since that is more in line with modern Lego sets. As a personal MOC, I prefer the baseplate since it enhances playability, but if Lego were to ever make it they would want it smaller than that for sure. I have made two other Robin Hood MOCs that are on Lego Ideas: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/108565 https://ideas.lego.com/projects/109893 Your input is helpful, and let me know if you have any comments about the other projects as well.

Here is my third MOC revolving around Robin Hood. This one is about Marian, and is a lot smaller than the first two. This set includes Marian, Wat O' the Crabstaff, and Prince John. Any feedback is much appreciated. This set is also a project on Lego Ideas, where you can read more details about the MOC: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/110035. I have posted a few pics below. Should new castles have (raised) blaseplates?
ootkaman replied to Artifex's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I find this topic fascinating! Count me on the side of those in favor of bringing back baseplates, with included stickers so that Lego could reuse the same baseplate in different sets. Of course, though, I am biased since I use them in MOCs too (as in the discussion at http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=112311). They are especially useful if they add playable terrain that would be difficult to create otherwise -
Thanks! You probably noticed, but there is a lever inside the lair that you can pull to make the bridge collapse

I just finished my second MOC revolving around Robin Hood, about Little John. This set includes a variety of Robin Hood-esque features and accessories, and 8 minifigs. Any feedback is much appreciated. This set is also a project on Lego Ideas, where you can read more details about the MOC: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/109893. I also figured this MOC could bring up some interesting discussions about BURPs and raised baseplates :) I have posted a few pics below.
