Sets that haunt you
Jay Psi replied to nerdsforprez's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Since I got out of my Dark Age the one set I wanted more than any other was 8480. I remember seeing it at my friend's house (not realizing it had gone out of production) and doing some quick maths on how much the motor was geared down for the various functions. I stopped when I got to >400:1 and had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Then I asked my friend where he/his parents got it, only to hear the cursed reply, "Sorry mate, I got it a couple of years ago now. Lego don't sell the Space Shuttle anymore." I was already a year into my Dark Age at this point ('99-00), but this was the moment when I decided in typical surly teenage fashion that everything Lego could suck it - if I couldn't own this masterpiece then there was no point bothering with anything else. Thankfully it only took thirteen years for my attitude to turn around, and the Space Shuttle was the first out of production set I looked for. It was also the set that drove me to discover Bricklink, although I actually bought it from ebay (damaged box, but sealed bags for a couple of pounds more than I was going to pay at a BL store). -
Thanks for the confirmation from both of you (I checked Brickpicker as well and apparently the US price of 8421 hasn't moved much so I was starting to doubt myself). If someone had the time and know-how to reliably sell on the other 1800 parts, they could build up quite a collection of RC motors, pneumatic brackets and metal hooks just from buying 8421 sets on the cheap! Back to Rockbrick's original dilemma, if the only way I could get 42043 was to get rid of 8421 I'd do it. Even though I like the mobile crane a lot the Arocs is my most hotly anticipated flagship since I got out of my Dark Ages.

I'm not sure about that, at least not in the UK. Since 42009 has been widely available used the prices of 8421 sets have fallen quite a bit. Even last year I picked up two complete 8421s for less than the RRP of 42009 (£149.99 at the time). Maybe I'm just particularly good at scalping auction sites though... A quick check on Bricklink also shows that complete 8421s in good condition can be had for less than £100 (excluding P&P). Or are you referring to parting it out and getting the most value out of the pneumatic brackets, RC motor, 32-long axle, metal hook, etc? I'm still struggling to see how that could make the €230+ the Arocs will likely cost but I can understand that with some patience this would get more money overall. If I had to guess, the UK RRP would be £170 like 42030 was.

I'll add my name to the "oldest first" brigade (which would be 42025 in this case), not just for the reasons mentioned but also because outside of special offers, older sets that are still in production usually have larger discounts on them. So if your experience matches mine going for older sets first should work out a bit cheaper in the long run.

[C-MODEL] 42030 Telehandler
Jay Psi replied to MrTekneex's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Perfect timing MrTekneex - I bought 42030 this morning, just before I saw this thread! It looks and works just as well as your other C-Models too. -
Yes. Yes I do. I think the wing looks much better with the quarter ellipses flush with the panels, it gives the wing a sleeker (and more aerodynamic) look. I know it juts out at the bottom now but that doesn't spoil the top-side profile. Thanks for making the change.
-
I like it. While I do like the original more I think there's room for such an extensive modification, and crucially you've done a very good job with motorizing the model. The quarter-ellipse in the rear wing still looks off to me but that can't be helped, there's no way to attach it one stud lower (to the panels).

[NMOC] Pagani Huayra
Jay Psi replied to darksheep's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm pretty sure the HoF is only open to Eurobricks members. But there's no doubt that this Huayra is as good as anything in the Hall of Fame. I think Francisco Hartley has the wireframe, 8448-esque style of building bodywork down to a tee. -
Awwww yes. Many thanks to you Jeroen & to Legolijntje for getting the instructions out so quickly.

Someone else Most people would be able to answer this better than me but here it goes... Gearboxes aren't only necessary in motorized sets. In fact, many RC capable MOCs don't have a gearbox because it would add too much complexity or waste the power from the motor in driving gears that could be put towards propelling the MOCs As for gearboxes in non-RC MOCs, remember that one of the "aims" of the Technic line is authenticity - to replicate the functions of the original as accurately as possible, given the available parts. Real supercars have gearboxes, so it makes sense that Lego supercars should emulate this. In recent years the trend has moved away from transmission gearboxes to function gearboxes, presumably because the focus tests LEGO conduct show that there is more selling potential going down this route. But the best thing about Lego is that if you don't like what's available, you are free to do it your own way Edit - This is an excellent article to read if you want to know more about how the increasing use of motorization has impacted Technic sets and MOCs.

I'm only going to echo what's already been said, don't turn down the 8110! Apart from the steering (which can be fixed in a variety of ways depending on your needs) it's a brilliant set. Even as a parts pack it's worth the money but I think the size and number of functions it offers makes it one of the greatest sets of the "modern" Technic era. However, the ace-in-the-hole is the ease of which the Unimog can be modded - RC conversions, extra pneumatic functions, mechanical or linear actuator based add-ons, mostly thanks to the PPO/PPTO on both front and rear. And JB is on the money - if you can find one for a good enough price, 8455 is an absolute must for any pneumatics fan. I doubt we'll ever see another set with 10 (large) pneumatic cylinders...

Black is the new black, right? I really like the wheel covers of the Redator and I would prefer the rear wing to the original if the 3x5 thin ellipse liftarm could be moved down a stud so it sits more flush with the panels. I appreciate the exercise of making it flex axle-less but in this case I prefer the look with the flex axles.

The profile designer is exactly as I imagined it. Honestly the profile and connection issues (HTC One M7) made the app too annoying for me to use so the simplifications are welcome. Looking forward to giving the SBrick a proper go now. Edit - I seem to have come across the endless update loop that a lot of people are experiencing with their Sbricks. I don't mean this to be a complaint, but a heads-up that there are (obviously) still issues as this is a beta update.

42000 Grand Prix Racer Mod!
Jay Psi replied to Perry15's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Looking good actually. I have more faith in the strength of your MOC than I do in Honda's Indycar aerokit... -
I think this aspect of the MOC needs more praise. To be able to do as much as Nathaniel has with relatively common parts (so everyone can obtain them with less hassle) makes this MOC that much more impressive to me. I know it's not the same but I think it's similar to working under the part-based restrictions with LEGO - so I would assume it does in some way limit the options you have. I'd love to hear Nathaniel's thoughts on this and if/how it affected the design.
-
Having purchased the 42000C instructions last night I didn't exactly have to wait long - the details came pretty early this morning. No complaints here. Also, thanks for the bsx file. Just got to get my hands on a few more pieces and I'll be joining the rest of you! Edit - Jantujeh, I assume with the parts list available this will make its way onto Rebrickable soon, or does Nathaniel have to upload the files himself?

RC Hamster
Jay Psi replied to Sariel's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It's a typically brilliant MOC, but I'm still trying to figure out where you put the IR Receiver... Given the problems with the IR system in strong sunlight, did you perhaps put the receiver where the sun doesn't shine? -
You guys have got me so excited that I've just bought Nathaniel's 42000 C-Model instructions to tide myself over... With all the innovative features and techniques it sounds like this model is going to be a revolution in LEGO supercars.

Your Best Technic Bargains
Jay Psi replied to Kumbbl's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've not been able to match the bargains on here, but I did get 8653 & 8674 for £50 each. The seller had listed them both as incomplete because the Enzo's door mechanism and the F1's steering were both jammed. Five minutes later I'd attached the damped cylinders in the right place on 8653 and used 1/2 pins instead of 3/4 pins in the steering rack of 8674 and I had both sets complete and working having paid half their market value, without adding any pieces of my own. This one's not so much a bargain, it's more of a "got more than I paid for" - I paid £85 for a used 8461, built once by an adult collector and in excellent condition apart from a lack of stickers, but I was going to get custom-made replica stickers anyway. So imagine my surprise when I flick through the instructions only to find an untouched sticker sheet in perfect condition... -
They look like the hubs from the Dirt Crusher sets (or their supplementary wheel packs) but I haven't seen those tyres in orange before. Edit - Thanks to metulskie8 for the reference, the tyres (and presumably the wheels) come from the 8676 Sunset Cruiser

Which Porsche should i choose?
Jay Psi replied to jg711's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Personally I'd go for the Moby Dick racing version. Recreating the long tail would be an interesting exercise. But any 935 would be a good choice as long as it's got the classic Martini livery! -
Oh great, there's another set I'll have to buy in the summer! I am eagerly looking forward to instructions to both that C-Model and this 42008 one.

Little American Truck

That's really nice for a small scale MOC. I especially like the use of double split connectors as large (on this scale) mirrors!- 31 replies

I'm not Bricktrain but IIRC the individual parts aren't stored on Bricklink with the 4-digit numbers that the Lego shop gives them, so you have to do a little bit of digging. Having said that, all of those parts can be found in the various "Electric" categories as so: 8881 Battery Box 8882 XL Motor 8883 M Motor 8884 IR Receiver 8885 IR Remote 8886 Extension Wire Edit - I have been corrected (see above and below!). Well the links are there if you need them.

lego guitar concept
Jay Psi replied to PKW's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That's very good, it sounds for me to recognize it! At least, I hope I've got it right and I haven't just massively disappointed you...N.B. Don't click the link if you want to keep guessing Edit - No problems extracting or playing it here (W7 using foobar to play the mp3 file, so I can't speak for Mac users).
