Is this a drag racer?
-
Although this build was inspired by a Series 12 CMF, I think it fits best in the town forum. It can be driven by other figures, and it is actually based on a classic town model, the van from 6350 'Pizza To Go' (called 'Mama's Pizzeria' in Britain). "Did the Special order a special" I have always assumed that the 6350 van was a Lego representation of a Japanese 'kei' van, a very small type of vehicle most common in Japan (where their very small dimensions and engine size allow for tax advantages) but also occasionally seen in Britain and Europe on very light duties (though they are less common than they used to be). The front-end has been extended and restyled, inspired by early 'kei' vehicles, and also old British forward control vans like the Commer PB. The roof has been raised to make up for the absence of an opening roof, and the 'Pizza Delivery Guy's' printed box forms the sign on the roof (there is no other branding of any kind). The original 6350 van's walkie-talkie has been replaced by a smart phone, a custom printed 'iBrickphone' from Fire Star Toys (pure Lego alternatives are available). The biggest changes are at the rear. Rear lights have been added, and the load bay has been enlarged, taking advantage of the raised roof. While the 6350 van could only just hold four pizzas, this van carries four in the lower compartment alone. The upper compartment can only hold one, and carries the most special pizza, the very spicy brown crusted Pizza of Resistance! "Jeff, don't! It has cheese!" It is just possible to wedge another pizza into the top of the lower compartment, increasing the van's capacity to 6, but this is not recommended. The large lower compartment can also carry other loads, like paaaaaaaaants! Power comes from a small underfloor engine, accessible by lifting up the drivers hinged plate seat. In the absence of an opening roof, the hinge also provides a novel way to get the driver in. While this van is based on a classic town model (which I never owned) I believe that, as a 'kei' van, it also fits into a modern 'City' scene, as it is supposed to be smaller than the other vehicles.

Lego worst failures by Lego Designer Mark Stafford

What was the purpose of the micromotors in the fibre optic sets? Can any owners enlighten me? -
Great video. 'The Coffee Chain' is straight out of 'The Lego Movie.' I like the use of diving masks from the 1997 range and the CMFs. Could the sunken ship be one of the early '90s range come to grief? One error, though; the Chinook's blades rotate in the same direction. They should rotate in opposite directions.

Thank you for the feedback, 'lightningtiger' and 'Eggyslav.' I been working on the car. It now has two 1 x 6 plates to cover the gaping holes in the chassis. I think these improve the car's aggressive stance. It's amazing what just one plate can do in this scale. I also added another plate to the front, taking the opportunity to add some style at the same time. Yes, I suppose most of my Lego vehicles would now count as retro-builds. In fact, I first built in consciously retro-style in the late 90s. I always has a longing for the 80s sets that I missed. I built several private cars, the simple reason that, in the mid to late 90s, TLG seemed to shy away from them (yes, that's an old problem). Another retro-build coming right up, if all goes well.

Armaments? Doesn't the real coast guard focus on rescuing people, rather than shooting bad guys? Anyway, have you tested this boat on real water?

MOC: roadster California (real convertable!)
Bornin1980something replied to solta's topic in LEGO Town
This is what I like, almost every possible working feature in a small space. I remember the irony of Lego 'convertibles' which were actually always open! The only thing it seems to be missing is an accessible engine. I think the secret is studless interior seating. This allows for more use of the available space. I used jumper plates for seating in a six wide truck I am building. This pushes each minifig half a stud away from the centre, allowing two aside seating. -
Alexander Dennis ENVIRO 500 MMC Hybrid Bus in Hong Kong
Bornin1980something replied to Gaultier's topic in LEGO Town
Wow. Amazing detail for a 10 stud wide, minifig compatible vehicle. It is rare for any minifig scale vehicles to be based on actual prototypes. It is even rarer for them to be unmistakable. I assume you custom printed all the decals on these models. Also, how many minifigures would each one actually take. I love it that you paid tribute to Alexander Dennis by name in the forum title. That company is now the biggest all British vehicle maker of any kind, and yet it is a very unsung hero of British industry. There is still a widespread belief that Britain doesn't make anything of note, even though almost everyone in Britain has been on an Alexander Dennis bus without realising it was British. As a non-driver, I know them quite well. -
This question is mainly for the administrators. I am a little concerned about my use of the site http://lego.brickinstructions.com/. I understand its use of the word Lego in its URL (but not in its actual title) might be against 'fair play' rules. My biggest concern, however, regards the sites very purpose, which is making Lego set instructions from the 1960s to the very newest sets available for free online. Even though Lego does this themselves for sets going back to 2002, Brick Instructions is not endorsed by them, and is more easily viewable. So far, I have used Brick Instructions in several buying decisions, as the basis for at least two MOCs, and to recreate the old set in my avatar. Have I actually been using pirated instructions? And are MOC's based (partly) on online instructions for sets I never actually bought acceptable on this site? Also, I have some custom printed bricks from FireStar Toys. Are these acceptable in MOC's on this site, or would the use of them get the MOCs moved to the Community forum?

Will you be filling this garage with Speed Champions Ferraris when they arrive in stores?

If you didn't mean to make a statement, then maybe the best satire is unconscious satire, because this is hilarious! All it needs now is the Octan logo - Lord Business would love it! It also reminds me of Chicken Run. Where are those yellow gemstones originally from? Because they make perfect fries! I actually have a fast food themed set (6329 Truck Stop from 1998). It's sign advertises burgers, sausages, and fries, but the only food item was a pizza. I thought it would be impossible to recreate fries in LEGO. you nailed it.

picture uploading not working?
Bornin1980something replied to 9v system's topic in Forum Information and Help
Are you using internet explorer? Because this is exactly what happened when I first tried to deeplink images. My computer also has Google chrome, so I switched to that browser for this site. Since then, I have had no problems with images. -
Both that and 'Typo's pictures look like leaks. I mean, they are not stamped or blurry, but an official picture will be much better exposed.

Help me improve a school Lego collection!
Bornin1980something replied to ficbot's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Does your Lego store have a 'build-a-figure' assembly point, where you can assemble and buy your own minifigures from parts? In my Lego store, I could buy three such figures for the price of two collectible minifigures. These accessory packs (available online, at least) may also provide some good figures. -
Maybe a moderator could change it.

Oops, l wasn't asking for actual interior shots. I was just commenting on how the model conveyed a sense of mystery (as an artwork). That said, other exterior detail shots and an old caravan interior (perhaps a separate model) would be interesting. I look forward to your next scene. By the way, it seems your attempt to rename the thread didn't work.

^ Thankyou, 'lightningtiger.' This is actually the first time I have ever posted a MOC in a pubic forum. More are on the way.

This is the first MOC I completed since coming out of my dark age. All parts are from my 90s Lego collection. The base is from a 1999 Shell promotional set, which used the 1996 style Formula One cars. A 2 x 2 plate above the rear bearing gives the car its aggressive slanted stance. That, and the long rear section, mark this car out as a mid-engined supercar. Like the exterior, the interior is all red, including the steering column. Access is via the traditional hinged roof. The leather jacketed driver is probably from a Town Jr set. I call him Quentin. The front-end was built as low as possible for aerodynamics. Styling is rather plain, but the wide racing wheels (also from the Shell promotional) make a bigger impression. The huge rear section is the car's powerhouse. Opening the rear hinged plate reveals the V8 engine (I usually assume two cylinders per stud). It too has a red colour scheme. The radio antenna and the lack of a spoiler mark this vehicle out as a roadgoing supercar, turning heads wherever it goes. At times, I have considered adding modern, specialised elements to make this car look more like a supercar, but I prefer it as it is, full of classic town atmosphere even though it was built in 2014! The only part I am unsure about is the radio antenna, a staple of classic town vehicles, but in this case it may spoil the vehicle's lines. What do other members think? The car was completed before I heard of the upcoming Speed Champions supercar line, which I am now really looking forward to. For a parting shot, here is the car with both hinges proudly open. The hinge is dead, long live the hinge!

Wow! This is the most atmospheric Lego image I have seen since the catalogues of the early 90s. Every time I look at your image I discover something new. Incredible use of force perspective, down to the use of small cones to represent an entire town. The caravan itself reminds me of a 1970-something caravan I stayed in at church youth camps between 2004 and 2006. The orange and brown curtain in the rear window really gives the caravan a 70s feel, and also gives it a sense of mystery; just what is inside this old vehicle? Do you have a photograph the actual caravan you based this model on to show us?
