TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff

Which sticker? @zephyr1934 sells stickers for custom containers on his BL store, (trainedbricks.com) including a Maersk set.- 578 replies

Or more useful to part out the set :)

Nice! But is the red vinyl really that far off from the brick or is it just the photo?

Le Tre Cime di Lavaredo - a big mountain with train tunnel
pirzyk replied to helos's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Wow! How do you trasport it? Does the mountain conform to MILS and is done that way? I would love to see photos if any exists. Really well done.- 20 replies

I probably will buy one freight to part out and maybe during an AFOL day.
-
interesting, I am not familar with the prototype. Are you working from a plan or a photo?
-
Physics will get in the way and you wind up having a shorter train. The more curves the train is in at the same time, the harder it is to pull. Or said another way, it is easier to pull a longer train on a straight than a curve, no matter how wide the curve is.
-
Yes, and i hear @Stash2Sixx is working on one as well.

I think the real reason LEGO went to rail powered is that battery technology was not good enough in the first place. I am not sure that is true anymore. No worries about the 'rant' :)
-
Longer trains! Better battery life. The SantaFe Superchief cars are quite heavy. Most of the time I can't pull all 5 cars with a single motor. I can pull 5 EN style cars with the aforementioned engine. The weight issue is also a big reason I have not gone to 8w, I like my really long trains (15+ cars). I am in the process of trying to rebuild all my shipping containers to use the corrugated wall panels instead of the 1x2 brick with groove, once LEGO produces them in more colors.

They don't last very long on their site. I think the original boxcar set was a run of 25 and may have sold out in 1 to 2 days before BW. Actually yes they are forced (contractually obligated) to commit to a certain number of sets produced *before* the movie is even created. If TLG balks at it, they may not get the next big Disney production (think Star Wars, etc). Remember the Lone Ranger was produced when Johnny Depp was printing monies for everyone with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
-
This probably has more to due with the influence Disney pushed on them and if the movie had not been a flop the the line would have sold better. i.e. out of LEGO's control in this one Not sure this isn't a case of them being to conservative in how well it is going to be received. You can also add several of the Ideas sets to this category; Mars Rover and Research Institute come to mind.

I would like to see if any third parties out there would start putting out [more] complete sets. I like BMR's sets but I do 6w so that doesn't really help me. Brickmania seems to have success with selling complete sets, it would be nice if BMR and Brickmania have a love child To get people to jump from the traditional train hobby to LEGO trains, we need high quality (aka Creator Expert level) sets. They can be a bit more expensive because we're pricing against what they know; the traditional train sets. I can see BMR/Brickmania filling this role but I think we need more content. To get people to jump into the train hobby itself, we need less expensive sets (maybe Creator 3in1) that work with and augment the LEGO city sets. Not sure who would do that. Maybe some of the clone brands instead of ripping off LEGO could co-exist nicely? </pipe-dream>

At this point we are glad to see new trains even if there are bank robbers. We can't afford to be picky :(

Not the white ones by chance? :)

I am unaware of any mods for LEGO produced switches that move the switch throw to the other side of the tracks. Most of the mods I know of are to make single crossovers that fit the existing 8 stud spacing and 16x alignment geometry.

I think the 2x and 4x have less of a need since LEGO track is useful enough. A ballasted plate of 4x straights would be 64 studs long. I could use the 2x straights but I currently have enough LEGO straight track. You can get a tool now built thar would be 20 inches long? I would concentrate on stuff we can't get elsewhere or is technically superior. Like 1/4x Straights, 1/2x Straights, R104 Switches, and R104 Double Crossovers :D Or what about a 90 degree cross? I'd think the tool would be smaller.

brickstuff sells a PF power adapter for their lights. that is how i get power to my maersk and CoNO lights.
-
Yes we will be in the gym. We are expecting 180' of track and 1,011 sqft of display space which maps to 1,491,968 studs! :)

NILTC is having their yearly Christmas show this coming weekend (9th and 10th of December). For those in the Chicago area, we have moved the show this year due to our regular venue (Cantigny Park) being under construction for remodeling. More info can be found at our website.

Not to quite derail this discussion, but NILTC will be having their Christmas show next weekend (Dec 9th and 10th). Details can be found on our website. We will be running our double loop of R104 and R120s curves and we have the prototype R104 Double Crossover to boot! Anyone in the Chicago area can come see them in action.

Define freezing. Does the motor make noise but does not rotate the shaft? Is the motor housing hot? Check also the it receiver. I wondering if something is overheating.
