  1. Hi, First, in Studio, it’s not LDD parts (or just a very few), it’s LDraw parts. Then, those parts are 1. simplified (and sometimes wrong), and 2. perfectly in-System. For instance, a 1xN brick is exactly 0.8cm x (Nx0.8)cm. A real LEGO brick is more 0.78cm x (Nx0.8-0.2)cm. IOW, there’s space left around the bricks, because if they were “perfect,” 1. you would need an hydraulic press to place bricks next to each others, 2. even if you managed it, the bricks would then fuse at the atomic level. Another example: in LDraw, clips and bars have the same diameter, 0.32cm, IRL, clips are 0.32cm and bars are 0.318cm.
  2. “Tools, not rules” rhymes too In Studio, all Technic pins have a stud connector. That allows them to connect to antistuds. When I asked about it, I was told it’s because AFOLs use this connection often… though it’s not something I noticed. (Note that it works on/for plates; on bricks, the pin doesn’t go all the way because the anti-stud is at the base of the bricks and the stud at the end of the pins.) I’m not sure I like that. But then again, missing connectors are less of a hassle in LDraw editors (Studio included) because you have simple tools to move parts around. In LDD, you need scaffolding (sometimes very complicated) and tricks to adjust movements (like using a clip on a 2540 to move by 2LDU).
  3. Not an e-mail notification, but some forums warn you (“Are you sure? There’s a new post.”) when you click the post/submit button that there’s a new post or it was edited. And maybe it’s you who didn’t see my post: I posted between the time you refreshed the page and the time you submitted your edit. Anyway, that’s just interesting as a “how does the forum work” question Yes. For the LDraw editors, as they started (or still are) without snapping or collision detection, the question didn’t arise and now that people are used to be able to do anything, I think the “opinion” is that snapping and collisions are tools, not rules, especially as they aren’t perfect or complete. At least it’s my opinion
  4. I wrote before you did it and, unless the forum let me post without warning me about it, I posted before too
  5. I was just commenting on LEGO’s rules and parts’ stress. People are free to what they want. (I also use some studs in Technic holes when necessary in my MOCs )
  6. @Garry_rocks For info, one stud in one Technic hole is illegal now. At least it was for the BrickLink Designer Program. The Technic hole is indeed smaller than an antistud and stresses the stud but it was considered acceptable before. The “7-year-old rule” made it totally unacceptable for more than one stud. Also remember that it’s not because LEGO did it once (or thrice), that it’s okay. Rules change. @Calabar Er , the only distance difference with Technic holes is that Technic holes on bricks are higher than side studs (by 0.12mm). The (horizontal) distance between two Technic holes is obviously the same as the distance between two studs, at least on the same Technic part (that is: it may not be the same for two parts side by side). Just look at a 1x16 Technic brick and try and devise a way to have the distance between the holes different than the distance between the studs to see why it’s obvious
  7. News: it’s actually almost fixed, you just need to refresh the palette, so: uncheck/recheck does it, but also starting a search or toggling the decorated filter… or simply pressing Tab!
  8. There’s a couple bugs associated to that checkbox. Notably when it’s checked at startup. You need to uncheck and recheck it and then it works.
  9. Hi, Please see the help page or the Parts FAQ for the usual reasons why you don’t find those parts.

  11. Hi, It’s a problem with the new installer in Studio 2.23.1(1). You need to reinstall 2.22.12(1) (and then refuse to update)… or wait for a fix. See this post on the dedicated Studio forum (needs a BrickLink account).
  12. Hi, You can use the Replace tool. Note though that it only works in the current submodel. So you’ll either need to do it for every submobel one by one. Or you can export to LDraw, edit the (text) file in an editor, and then re-import.

  14. Hi, I run Studio on Wine since the beginning (on a Debian Sid, so lots of versions of Wine & Studio during the years). The only problems I had with IM are: The missing fonts: texts show but you can’t grab them or the sizes are wrong / settings have no effect, callouts don’t appear. Just link the .ttf in drive_c/windows/Fonts and it works. (It’s because Studio directly reads the files (or tries to) to get their sizes, so if they aren’t where it looks for them, sizes are set to zero and that screws up a lot of things.) Outlines around the bricks are too thin when you export the instructions. No solution found yet. As for general problems, there’s the focus problem (problem 2 in OP), that can be solved with a virtual desktop or by disabling window management for Wine windows. Best solution depends on how you work: I use almost full screen windows in virtual desktops, not icons/reduced windows in a task manager, and mouse focus, so a virtual “sub-”desktop for Wine is best. There’s also the update dialog (where the patcher shows the changelog and its progress bar) that sometimes appears black. Solution is to just wait a few seconds and click on the bottom right (where the “launch” button would be). Be sure to have Mesa installed. It’s not easy to see when a lib is missing but tracing Wine can help.
  15. aFrInaTiOn said it all (thanks!). But beware of 2.22.11(1): Studio doesn’t start when you left it with the ‘Hide parts not available in the selected color’ box checked. And it has a lot of problems with editing submodels.
  16. Again, the .dat I’m talking about are already in Studio, so there’s no need to download them (well, except a few, see below). Official LDD part -> is either totally in Studio or there’s a .dat in Studio 2.0/ldraw/Unofficial/parts, it’s those files you need to import in PD as 3D models. As for files downloaded from the LDraw website, yes, they are .“dat”. Because that’s the extension for LDraw part files (not a great idea to use the overused .dat for a text format… but it was the 1990s). You need to download their subfiles and maybe new primitives… and that’s partly explained in the Parts FAQ. The thing is, .ldr, mpd, .dat, are the LDraw extensions and the native format for Studio parts (that’s how they’ll end up once exported from PD). Even PD’s .part format is just a slight extension to LDraw’s .dat. That means there’s no transformations when you import a .dat/.ldr/.mpd into PD (well, when you export to Studio, PD makes a few not really smart changes but it does not change the geometry). It’s on digital-bricks.de (direct link to the .dat). I forgot that: it’s was in one of the last updates of LDD and the .dat is not in Studio (Studio already existed at the time and didn’t update with LDD). Otherwise, look in Studio’s files. LDraw doesn’t want to include them as-is in the library, even in Unofficial. But they are sometimes used to start a new model (but there’s so many corrections to do, especially on ‘sculptures’ that the authors often start from scratch). And D-B.de has all of them… it’s just the navigation on the webstite that’s not easy. (Use the link above as a template: replace the ID in the URL and if the link answers, you get the .dat file. Otherwise, the model is not in LDD.)
  17. The parts I’m talking about are indeed not in LDraw but there’s an LDraw file for them. They have LDraw 3D models because there’s tools (digitalbricks.de) to convert LDD’s (and a few LEGO games’) parts into LDraw. They are not in LDraw because they are far from being acceptable (they are just a triangle mesh, they don’t use primitives, they are often wrong (LDD parts are not very good)). Those files are in Studio (generally in Studio 2.0\ldraw\Unofficial\parts ). For info, there’s about a thousand parts in this situtation (= in official LDD, but not on the LDraw website, but with an existing LDraw file). Simply put: in ldraw.xml, there’s all IDs of parts in LDD and their official/unofficial LDraw match if it exists. (To answer your other post in the Custom LDD bricks thread, the custom part are also there.) It’s just a matter of crossing that list (or those lists) with Studio’s StudioPartsDefinition2.txt (the parts Studio knows and has). Then you’ll have the list of LDraw files to import in PartDesigner. The doubts I have on going through Studio are: How do you know the parts the parts are not in Studio? you need to select and check the parts one by one, cumbersome How do you ‘send’ those parts to PD? you need to put them one by one in a file, cumbersome hopefully you’re using the LDraw format, not OBJ! Then, in PD, you need to import the files one by one. (That, unfortunately, is unavoidable.) Assemblies. Example: the faun legs. Even in LDD, it’s 3 parts/IDs ((standard) hips, left leg, right leg). If you don’t notice that in your click-clicks, you will end up with a monolithic part (un-poseable) in PD. Going with IDs, you won’t have a choice. Lots of clicks. Well, all that is in ldraw.xml. I’ll see if I can find time to help you. BTW, I hope you know about Cheenzo’s parts repository.
  18. Hi, Your process seems overly complicated and wasteful to me. I especially fear the method you use to “send the part to PartDesigner.” A few facts / a little context: — All the parts that are available in LDD have a(n ugly) LDraw version, a direct conversion. — All the ‘converted-from-LDD’ LDraw files that have not been refined (or remade from scratch) by LDraw are distributed along with Studio. Some of them are included in Studio’s Main palette. Some, as you found out, are not. But they are all still there. That’s why you can import any LXF and Studio will show them to you. What that means is that you can import those LDraw files directly in PartDesigner, without needless conversion and click-click-clicks. What you need is a list of the IDs that are in LDD and not in the Main palette. That can be easily obtained from StudioPartDefinition2.txt and the list of .dat files in Studio. Then you can copy the .dat files in a separate folder to more easily find/open them from PD. You also need a table matching LEGO IDs with BL IDs (they aren’t necessarily the same, and you’ll find many parts only exist decorated in the BL catalogue). And then you ‘just’ open one file at a time in PD and add connectivity and export it to Studio and pack the files…. You may also find my ldraw.xml file useful to know which parts are available in LDD (and if they have a good LDraw model or just an ugly one). (As an aside, Studio knows how to import some decors. lxf2ldr & lxf2ldr.html know how to do that too, and better than Studio )
  19. The application is extremely simple and does not modify the PNG at all. It always writes the same file, just changing the size of the rectangle on which the texture (= the PNG) is applied. The only job it does on the PNG is encode it in base64 to include it as a Studio/LDraw .dat file is all text. So if you give it a 100x10 image and ask for a 10x100 sticker, it’ll be all distorted
  20. Hi, 1. Changing the BOM: Nope, no can do. What you can do is make another ‘model’ (not built, just the parts laying around) with only the necessary parts and generate the instructions just for the BOM and then either export as PNG to import in the main model as images or use a PDF editor. 1’. Import a Wanted List: https://studiohelp.bricklink.com/hc/en-us/articles/6483161921303-Importing-a-Wanted-List Contrarily to Official sets, you can only import them as a palette. So you have to use the parts in a ‘model’ if you want them in the BOM. (Beware: you can use more parts than what is in a ‘counted’ palette, by copying them / changing their colours in the build…. So be careful while ‘building’.) 1”. Make a diff of Wanted List: not possible on BL itself. You need other tools, like Rebrickable.com or BrickStore (I’d go for BrickStore because it’s linked to the BL catalogue while Rebrickable has its own catalogue and there’s therefore a double conversion that may change some parts). 2. Mixing two models: nope. The instructions tell how to build the current model. Or maybe I didn’t understand what you’re wanting. 3. Stickers: PartDesigner allows you to put any image on (almost) any part, including tiles. As for the dimensions, PD used to scale up the images to 320 pixels per stud (1016 ppi), that’s more than necessary. I also made this small application that generates a custom part ‘sticker’ (= a thin rectangle with an image that you can place anywhere) for Studio: https://gitlab.com/sylvainls/png2studio_dat.html 3’. Printer: I don’t know.
  21. Hi, the button is next to the search box on the building palette. See the help page.
  22. Forgot to say: the culprit is the bounding box, not the position. (You can see the BBs by hitting 1, 2 or 3 in Developper mode.)
  23. It was already working that way in official LDD.
