Custom LDD bricks and fixes
SylvainLS replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@jester94 Oopsy, with 43045, I realized a few parts with variants already in LDD slipped through my sieves. I updated the candidates list and made an erratum list. Sorry for the inconvenience! -

Custom LDD bricks and fixes
SylvainLS replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Yes, it happens with LDD. It’s just that it makes two almost identical parts in LDD (one colourable with the correct number, the other not). Where one finds their fun is their business -

36036: underside is missing connectivity. 3671: typo in the list, it’s 367 for BL and LDraw, not 361. 18934, 20603, and 30329: why renumbering? why aren’t they modifications of 18932, 20601, 30327? (none are in LDraw anyway) -
Er, no, it’s the super computer that is the physical world that forces you, through its physical laws, to do it the correct way. The falling apple doesn’t know the laws of physics and doesn’t compute its way with mathematics, it just falls, and it bounces when another object is in the way. In the physical world, you actually do it by trial and error. You’re just guided by the laws of physics and your many senses and you can move several parts in several ways at the same time. In the simulation that a CAD is, you practically have only one sense: vision, and you can only move or rotate one piece (or one fixed group of pieces) at a time, so trial and error is way more frustrating.

Bottom tube connection? The skirt is missing its .g file. We talked about it a few days ago. 1997-1998. 2000 is a low and “creativity” explodes again in 2001-2004. No, but that doesn’t change much (I didn’t want to spam the topic with more and more graphs): The interesting bits in the graph is that green is almost nowhere (by definition, green ≥ yellow) and purple isn’t very visible either (purple ≥ blue), especially before 2002. As I said, there are errors and parts we are not interested in (Quatro…) but they don’t modify the trends much. Yes, as I said, I let them because I don’t want to decide (interestingly, they are the most “useful”). They are not that numerous (84) and rather simple. And if they can’t be added anyway, they are even less of a problem. -

Link corrected. Sorry there still are too many parts. I thought I shouldn’t force my views / needs and let you pick what you prefer to work on. -

Here is a CSV (separator ‘;’ (semi-colon), with headers) with the parts that: are not in LDD, are available in LDraw, have usage dates in BL. I tried to clean that long list (from 1011 to 672 parts): removed Quatro and Primo but left Duplo (some people use them as filler), removed assemblies (there’s a lot of them in BL: wheel + tyre for instance), removed subparts / incomplet parts, sometimes added assemblies instead. There might still be “strange” parts or I might have removed some I shouldn’t have. Also, some parts are not very well placed in this list because they didn’t appear in many sets but they could be very useful (e.g. Monorail! wink-wink-nudge-nudge). Anyway, that’s a good base to see if a part may be useful. -
A part, even if it’s an assembly of subparts, is fixed and immovable. The same can be said for submodels: on the level they are used in, they are seen as parts. The only difference with parts is that you can edit them in Studio. They then become the current model and their submodels and parts are immovable. It’s submodels all the way down, until you hit a “part” which you can only edit in PartDesigner. BUT, as it was a big problem for hinges, torsos…, Studio added a tool. If you use a standard torso (that comes with Studio), if you select the part and hover over the hand (looks like a wrench) icon, there’s a third icon on the right (the first two being translation and rotation). That icon is a hinge tool for these assemblies: you can edit the part and rotate the arms. BUT, you can’t make your own hingeable assemblies with PartDesigner, yet (we asked…). So, TL;DR, yes, for now, you have to make the minifigure in the correct pose in PD or create a decorated part for each subpart, and all the separated parts will appear in the BOMs.

Okay, correction then. A question for the list of useful parts: Can you do assemblies? Like the old hinge plates 3149ac01. The connector (313.dat) would be a new kind of connection/hinge, no? -

@jester94 You mean you corrected 20460 and 20461 which already are in LDD or did you make new ones? @Calabar Merging variants (as per BL info) doesn’t change the graphs much. (They are only 645 groups of variants, we go from 11210¹ parts to 10286.) (¹ Yeah, not 11169, I used an outdated list of parts IDs. Everything has been corrected since.) So I think listing the parts that exist in LDraw and sorting them by the number of sets they appear in will be a good start. Now, looking at these “useful” parts, I see that there are assemblies that parasite the data (e.g. complete torsos, used in many sets, not found in LDD but they actually ARE in LDD), so I need to cull them and I’ll give jester94 the list. He will be able to choose from there. -

Well, I could merge entries when IDs only differ by the end letters. 4081a would be merged with 4081b. Parts pack would be merged too but as they are parts pack, they should already have the same years and sets. But there are many variants that have different numbers altogether (e.g. 3794(ab) and 15573). So I need to make a proper list first (the data is there somewhere). That would be the “New parts” diagram with the same for “Not in LDD”: -

“Usefulness” = number of sets the parts introduced that year were used in. “Lost usefulness” = number of sets we can’t do in LDD because of the missing parts. Of course, I only have the number of sets each part is used in, not which sets (I’d need to have the entire BL inventories for that), so sets are counted many times. The peak is 1978 (minifigure parts?). @jester94 Vroom! -

Good idea. I have the number of sets the parts appear in. I’ve added them to the data (same links as above). (Not fun: when someone edits a post, you need to reload the entire page to see the modification, even if you post yourself. I hadn’t seen that remark though I posted twice.) -

4186 xml files in Primitives (so, roughly, the number of parts in LDD 2670) 5002 .dat files referenced in the latest (not yet published) ldraw.xml (old, obsolete files are importable, plus ~100 custom parts) 7738 parts not in LDD total, 3953 with a date range. 1307 parts not in LDD have a corresponding .dat file, of which 1012 have a date range. (Note: 1161 parts are in LDD and not in LDraw.) The list of BL parts with dates: CSV (separator “;”, with headers, columns: bl_id; alt_ids; first_year, last_year; nbr_sets). 301 out of 1622, yes. It’s cumulative of course (old parts still used in 2020 but not in LDD). 7024 parts with dates. -

First stats on the data: Data for active parts: years ranges of usage (in sets) as known by BrickLink. (Parts used in a set in 1950, then in 1952 is counted as active for 1951 too.) (Parts with a “p” or “stk” in their ID aren’t included.) Data for LDD: active parts that don’t have a corresponding ID in LDD (“Corresponding ID” = the BL ID, or its known alternates IDs, or the LDraw ID as used by Studio. “Not in LDD”: the ID doesn’t appear in ldraw.xml, Studio doesn’t have a match for LDD.) -

SylvainLS replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
It’s already taken care of: LDD-4081 is BL/LDraw 4081b, so the “good guys” made LDD-40811 to match BL/LDraw 4081a. They also did this for part packs (e.g. Batman emblems: numbered a to f for BL/LDraw and 1-6 for LDD). As for ldraw.xml, when there’s a choice, I generally use the latest variant in LDraw, so that it’ll cost less if you want to make a Wanted List and buy it. -

4081a / 40811 is thinner. The ring is half a plate. So one tile on each side = 1 stud wide. 4081’s ring is a full plate. So one tile on each side = 1 brick wide, too large for some old builds (there’s a Classic Space ship that uses that). -

SylvainLS replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Yes, I thought about Studio too: they match BL ids to LDraw ids. They also have LDD’s ids (for LXF import). Of course, and stickers too. It still leaves 11169 parts (just filtering on the ids, there might be special ids with a “p” or “stk” in them I won’t catch). It seems to me making the scripts to correctly fill a DB that will serve once or twice is as long (or even longer) than just making the scripts to arrange and query the data. I’m waiting for the data to be slowly and gently downloaded now….
