Tantive IV Main Corridor with Airlock Doorway MOC
Kristof replied to TheCreatorr's topic in LEGO Star Wars
With a risk of coming out as a hypocrite (given that I also offer some building instructions that aren't free of charge), I feel like there is a growing tendency of posting purely sale-oriented topics. This really feels to me like product description (very much inspired by the official lego set descriptions) with the primary focus of promoting your shop :) I remember there used to be some moderation in this regard, perhaps even something in the forum rules, but maybe the tendency and preferences changed... I don't know. So I apologize in advance to everyone who disagrees and thinks that I am just creating a drama again, that's not my intention. Though frankly, if I may react to the only part of the post which seems to be exclusive to this forum and not just copied from the shop: I have to say that this looks exactly like the corridor segment of your previous Tantive IV diorama build with an extra front wall. I guess it may allow for some alternate views, perhaps quite interesting pictures... ultimately I don't see too many display or play options that would benefit from having the second wall. All in all, this is IMO a modification of the other MOC, possibly even a better choice for someone, but as it is it doesn't bring anything new or interesting in terms of creative design when compared to your other recent MOC post. Once again, apologies for not being unconditionally positive :) I know this isn't all nice and cheering, but it's my honest feedback. -
It looks spectacular!

Fun fact - these large bow pieces were one of the (admittedly minor) determining factors for this scale :) My munificent design never got past some crude dimensional mockups in LDD but these pieces were the first in place and it was clearly too good of a match to be turned down!

Looks pretty well crafted but I always like to see more pictures of the model, ideally physically built, before reading the advertising poster for the instructions (with pretty cool holograms, I like that touch!), particularly when the poster makes the actual model look kind of collateral next to all the graphics, logos and fonts. That's by no means an intended insult to your efforts. I just think that if your model is good (which it might), a set of decent pictures of it would present it much better than this ;)

I almost feel bad for how good this makes me feel to just see the finished model (given the overall state of things). But hey... there is nothing stopping me from getting excited when some model looks this cool! Fantastic job!

@MAG85 I tried some quick patch in your Studio file for the end caps. I first did one side with just modifying the attachment points so the round plate circles on the end could sit centered. I didn't spend much time optimizing it so there likely are things to improve but I think it's not too bad structurally and the properly round end looks better. Then just out of curiosity, I tried a different approach on the other side with the overhanging bows and inset end caps. It allows for some cool detail with that greeble thing that extends to the front but I am not a huge fan of how squarish it looks overall and I don't think it's a good fit for this modification - it has a different style than the rest of the model. Modified Studio file for the cockpit As for the 'height' of the whole front end, you only just pointed out for me that the issue is inherited from the official model... how weird they went for this. Anyway, I didn't attempt fixing that because I am not sure how the rest of the model goes together behind the 'neck' but I think your best shot is to force an extra 2 plate offset right where the neck connects to the body. I suspect there is some continuing sort of 'spine' from the sandwiched technic bricks though so it might be tricky to do that without violating the structure too much... but hey, it shouldn't be too much of a rocket science :) alternatively you would have to just offset the 'vanity' plating with the red stripe one stud up on these SNOT brackets and then deal with lifting the cockpit once again (2-3 plates seems like a proper amount), which would likely yield to sacrificing that long white bow piece that shapes the bottom of the neck. That part is IMHO quite poorly designed anyway as the piece just hangs in there with a bit of a gap... idk, not a spectacular design.

The shape is much better now and think the overall look improved by a lot! I still can't get rid of the feeling that it's low, though. You say you lifted it up 2 plates. but I think that the 'neck' which connects the cockpit to the body should be higher. The centerline of the cockpit cylinder should be level with the centerline of the greebles on the sides of the body. The red stripe that runs alongside the 'neck' should also be at the same hight. Meanwhile, I think it's 1 stud too low. Last, perhaps it has some structural reasons but I don't get why you extended these light grey round endcaps on the cockpit by that 1x6 plate in the middle. It's very visible that the shape isn't am perfect circle now and I think it looks a bit weird :)

@Midlife-crisis When you started this topic, I was expecting pretty slow going sort of LDD WIP topic that would be mildly exciting at best. Little did I know that in a month we would be looking at a nearly completed model which seems like a great and largely original design! I can only dream about having such determination and drive :) I'm looking forward to seeing the last few touchups in place. The cockpit is, frankly, not my cup of tea but that's entirely my problem of never fully accepting flex tubes and hoses as a satisfactory building technique. I totally appreciate the severe lack of other good options. Similarly with the engine intakes, where I would still like to see a different method for attaching the bows, but again, just my skewed preference. Other than that and overall I am just impressed.

@macaron35 You build your narrative very specifically for 'just giving a humble opinion': This sounds like TLG released the helmet sets *after* seeing the 'amazing BBB designs' and wanted to do something similar, which is a ridiculous claim. You might not have wanted to put it like that but that's how it sounds - almost a tabloid headline style of comment. Again, you are presenting your own (humble, I guess?) interpretation of events as bare facts. The fact that you let a number on the box seriously impact your perception of the set in such case speaks for itself, frankly. I often roll my eyes above discussion topics like this one where the point is some vague fabricated issue about a set and its 'worth' in the eyes of 'AFOLS', but I don't think I have ever seen one as pathetic as this one. Is it really so exciting to look for things to complain about and pin down as disappointing? Or maybe it is just some weird urge to create a topic but not having anything better to say? I apologize if I come as being rude to someone, but this is about as far from constructive and interesting hobby related discussion as it gets (unless, of course, you go off-topic completely).

@PusH I can answer the cheeseslope question - getting the smooth slope by using various half-plate offset techniques (such as the one I used) is not a problem and Martin could likely do it with ease. The issue is that it changes the angle of the resulting slope - it would be shallower (30 degrees in fact), and in fact very close to the angle of the second 'stage' of the slopes. That really kills the potential of this method for Martin's purpose, unfortunately. He needs the slope to be around 40 degrees. Btw using the half plate offset to get a smooth 45 degree slope is not trivial... in fact, I doubt it's possible with the standard pieces. All 45 degree slopes come in the 1x2 form which means you cant 'sink' the next slope 1/2 plate below the previous one. Well, technically, you can by using this part but you end up with odd 1 1/2 plate high gaps which would be a pain to fill. I wish this piece existed without the extra 1x1 plate :)

Neat! Looks to me like you got rid of all the obsolete parts!? Great job.
-
That might actually be mine MIDI Venator you are referring to :D But I agree the steps are a little bit of an eyesore here, I keep telling Mattin all the time. But in all fairness, it's very difficult to do anything about it and still keep the other details like the windows and such in place... I think what @PusH meant is that the very bottom of that vent looking bulgy thing in the back center of the tower is angled inwards, whereas you have it straight vertical.

^ This is so cool it gives me shivers :) You know how I am. The design is probably above 95% finished. Bricklink orders for some missing parts are pending tho - little time to manage that these days.

[MOC] Minifig Scale Clone Wars LAAT/i Republic Gunship
Kristof replied to IcarusBuilds's topic in LEGO Star Wars
How many more great Laat mocs are coming down the pipe :D There has been like 3 in last month! Wonderful rendition for sure, your execution of the rounded/tapered shape of the front fuselage is the best I have seen! I love it pretty much unconditionally, except two details - the tile work on the back edge of the sliding door makes for a nasty stepped edge. I would easily prefer studs over that minecrafty look :) Second, despite the slopes being decent approximation fo the rounded bodies of the top canons, it still looks kind of blocky. Both these places I think stand out quite a lot in comparison with everything else being wonderfully rounded and smooth. But anyway, great model, at least aesthetically :)- 26 replies

@Rustinidiel What a quick action! :D I like the changes. The combination of plates with rails and the grille tiles make up for a very cool effect, leaving just the one thin 'window' slot! Anyway, from my perspective, the new version looks much better.
-
* cool! Make sure to take my suggestions for what they are- just my personal opinions ;) I dont know about avoiding those rail plates, frankly. My poinr was that IMO having the trench which doesnt look very accurate might not be better than having no trench at all. But then again, my opinion only!
-
Some of the changes are improvements for sure, but some I think come at the expense of the authenticity of the overall shape and presence. The equator trench seems way too prominent here, being a full stud wide, especially because it's exaggerated by the use of plates with rails above and below. Therefore the whole middle 'band' of the model appears too 'slim' due to missing studs and overall give me more pokeball vibe :) I like the improved beam although the 6 wide dish seems a bit too large. 4 wide was a bit small on the other hand so I don't think there is a better choice between the two :) Last, I think I know where you were going with the dark grey texture using the jumper tiles and grilles, but I think at this scale it's just too aggressive. I feel like uniform color and surface represent the 'size' of the death star better and these little greebles make it look less believable.

[ MOC ] General Grievous Kinetic Sculpture
Kristof replied to cyberdyne systems's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Impressive :) Especially with the spinning lightsabers! It's just a bit unfortunate that there is a noticeable wobble in the upper body, but I can't see how that could be fixed. Btw don't you think his walk is a tad too slow? It looks to me like the pace of his gait is almost slo-mo compared to the blade spin. -
Im not sure if I am extatic or upset :D I always wanted to build this scaled ship and now it’s pointless because you did a perfect job! Then again knowing how slow my bucket list items actually get to the point of being picked up, letalone worked on and completed, I know very well that I’d likely have grandchildren before getting to it :D I dont think the dome piece looks out pf place for that rear armor plating. Overall I love the design and I am eagerly awaiting the physical build!!
-
@Brick-Wombat I know, right!? Frankly I don't think the intakes look bad as they are but sure the cleaner version would be better. One thing that goes to the lego design is that the longitudinal curvature is closer to the round slope they used than the 'almost' 90 degree circular curve created by the fender pieces. Anyway, the window piece seems to fit the cool model by Thomas Jenkins! I gotta say that my interest in the model in given scale increased by a lot now :)
-
Have you seen the lego set? I gotta say I quite like it :) The printed cockpit looks nice.

As simple as is this is actually pretty fantastic design! I wish lego made such set ;) -
It looks to me like your cockpit is too low. May be less than a brick... 2 plates possibly. But it still shows very much from all angles, particularly from the side view :) Looks like the Tantive is tired and its head is going down. I can imagine it should be possible to move it up a bit without much problems. And I agree with others that it’s just way too cylindrical - enlarging the midmost ‘ring’ may improve that a lot! Otherwise I like your changes a lot and I agree 100% that the stickers absolutely kill any appeal of that official one.
