I sent you a PM. :)

No need to apologize, rollermonkey. I understand scalping but I didn't understand the consumer as victim comment made earlier in this thread. I need to thank craiggrannell for the context when he mentioned the people boasting about 30 RIs. That was what I didn't know. How did they get those quantities? Customers at LEGO Stores were being (or supposed to be) politely denied the ability to buy more than the max per household (max started at two then was reduced to one). I know people can bend rules and use workarounds to get one or two extras over the max one or two per household limit. Yet If anyone had to work with the same limits and still managed to get 30, that must be a huge hassle unloading all of them, especially with that kind of profit. Just imagine being the guy who can't unload 30 $20 sets because they end up being manufactured and available for a few years. :)

Not yet. I was at an event over the weekend where I got to see different approaches to terrain. Regardless, I need to go on a parts quest. :)

Some are limited but not all. And some are limited not just in quantity but in region, too. I'd love a Shinkai set but they appear to be over $600 at the moment. Sometimes they do more runs, like with the Minecraft set I picked up a few weeks ago. I'm sorry if I missed this earlier. What would you propose? Please elaborate on who and in which way someone was victimized. I'm honestly trying to understand why someone feels this way. I did what I needed to do to get these recent Ideas sets. If I didn't, I wouldn't have them. I could try to buy them online, from local stores, and I could always call up friends in other cities or maybe even in a different country to see if they could help. I'd even strike a deal to make it worth their time. :)

In response to a thread about a loose part in the ExoSuit, someone referenced a post on reddit by Mark Stafford in which he wrote those parts were the last casts from an '80s CS mold for robot arms, that a new mold has been created, and yet he didn't know if it would be used if there is a second run of the ExoSuit (I read that as he didn't seem to know one way or another, but the mold was made). They can be used for other things of course, but it is still fun to speculate (for now :).

I see. That is very interesting. I wish them luck, though. A lot of consumers just don't know or care if their products are counterfeit.

No, thanks for posting that. I thought about it after I posted and was too slow to get back and edit it. :) I'm glad I had a chance to clarify it.

I edited that post just before you replied because I wasn't clear. :) I know about some parts. I meant the entire sets. I just think it will be sad if all manufacturing moves to China. I see that all the time with other companies and their products.

Custom graphics in ldd
m0dulo replied to Jordanbellamy's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
There is a lot of 3D software that is great for modeling but offers little or nothing in the way of rendering. rhino, sketchup, formz, solidworks, etc. Some can take plugins but others require separate renderers. I think LDD falls in this category, but a new user might not know or understand. One of the first questions I get asked after talking about modeling is, "How do I add my own custom pictures/materials/textures?" and I answer with, "well... you need a separate renderer for that." LOL I think there were misunderstandings all around. IMHO it sounded like he broke the rules and could get in trouble. I was actually scared to make that last post where I said I was confused. Glad to see it is all cleared up, though. -
I will always buy authentic LEGO, probably only from them or someone I trust. I avoid MIC whenever possible for many reasons. But I don't know what to think after I heard the LEGO CEO say they are going to begin manufacturing bricks in China.

You have a lot of nice builds in your photostream. I like your technique, but please tell me you don't ever use the Kragle. :)

I like them. Very interesting and I think you nailed it. :)

OK, that is a great video about a cool project, but what is the secret to that clean, empty room in your residence?

I'm really confused by this thread the more I read it. His question was a common (and expected) question for anyone learning new 3D software. I can't imagine anyone thinking that hacking the software (source or especially executable!) is a realistic option, especially to add something that is a basic feature of any decent renderer made in the past twenty years. It is often referred to as applying decals in the software. Do people often ask questions like that? That is like someone asking how to modify a watch when all they really want to know is if it possible to tell what time it is. I'm honestly sincere with my question. I'm trying to understand this forum and only curious about the what prompted that rule. -
I imagine this could be very good for a girl if the timing is right. I like the three vignettes. They represent three possible futures, and for me that is what makes it a complete whole. Personally, I'm more of an ExoSuit kind of guy but I like to pick up something different for $10-$20 every now and then and this fits that. My wife thinks it is a neat idea. On the other hand, she is not interested in it - she's into Friends. :)

I agree with this, too. My opinions above were about me and don't reflect what is probably best for LEGO's markets. What kept me from buying any of the cool Galaxy Squad sets and other themes is the inclusion of the enemies that I don't like, don't want, and don't have parts I can use for something else because of color or weird shapes. I don't know how successful this would be, but it would be cool if they created a classic space universe with different factions, all separate, allowing people to build their own scenarios. Like in a a Sci-Fi TV show, you get your spaceship, you explore worlds, you pick your battles, and it can be a different story every time. Like ugly aliens and robots? Get those sets. Don't like insects? Don't get those. Want to explore a tropical planet? Buy that planet set. But packaging a cool $25 mech made from cool LEGO parts with a $15 day-glo insect thing I don't like means I don't buy anything. Maybe kids do, but it sounds like that whole line didn't do so well. Space. Universe. Big. Modular. Options.

I'm not speaking for anyone else, but I think conflict has always been a part of everyone's culture. I just got off the phone with someone in their late 60's that was into everything you mentioned. GI Joe is 50 years old this year, after all. Now that I think about it, everything we talked about was conflict-related on some level. I think it is important for all of us to not romanticize "space exploration" from that time. It wasn't really about the altruistic benefits of science and exploration by and for mankind — it was the Space Race during the Cold War. The primary reason humans went into space was because two opposing superpowers with big military budgets were scared one was going to gain significant advantages over the other. As a kid during that time, it seemed we were always in direct competition with and comparing ourselves to them. Space Race + Cold War + USA Bicentennial (1976) = very important time to be smart, strong, and patriotic. Context is everything. If someone wasn't there, didn't experience it, wasn't taught it, or wasn't reminded about it, they wouldn't see any conflict among a classic space scene with astronauts all wearing suits and helmets in neat colors. (They definitely weren't an international group putting aside their differences to collaborate and share for a common goal for the benefit of everyone on Earth! That would be crazy talk. It was controversial when a non-American rode on the Space Shuttle for the first time.) Every friend that had a set would say red were USSR (cosmonauts like a bad word, not astronauts), and the USA and USSR were competing to be the first at something or at war. There is a chart in the Space Race article that illustrates the competition between both superpowers. (Note their use of blue and red to distinguish USA and USSR) I am implying nothing about LEGO in any way. This is all IMHO and about human beings creating their own stories on their own. Give them two pet rocks and they'd probably come up with something similar. It is just human nature. But I want to create my own stories. Space insects? Huh? Just give us spaceships and we will work out the rest. ;) I agree completely.

One of the wrists on mine was loose. I moved a few identical parts around and got a good match though. What I think should and could have been better is the greebling at the shoulders and shins. Whenever I move the arms, I worry that those pieces are going to come apart (because they usually do).

I love this! I was hoping to do something like this. My current parts inventory would dictate a beach and less greenery. ;)
