There are certain similarities. He's more like the product of Vezon aiming the Spear of Fusion at a Bota Magna-raptor and the Grinch.

Yeah. It looks so peaceful, which makes the spectacle seem a good deal less horrific than it otherwise would.

There is something bizarrely beautiful and moving about that photo, though I wouldn't want to stare at it for too long.

"Malum" is the Nominative Neuter form of the Latin adjective for "evil." Seeing as the character was released in the year which introduced the desert planet of Bara Magna, which was home to Metus (or "fear,") the Village of Vulcanus, and a number of characters with Latinate (but, as far as I can tell, meaningless) names, I'd say this was no accident. 2016 has its own Latin-derived name, in the form of "Terak," a pun on "Terra," the Latin word for "Earth."

Surely everyone does this sort of thing, with all manner of things? I can think of plenty of instances in which I was dubious of something, only to be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, it was in the epilogue. If memory serves, it was probably more jarring if you had read the serial. I seem to recall it and the book not quite matching up -
Methinks it's disproportionately large, with a crack that follows suite. It really doesn't blend with the rest of the model.

Hmmm... While I like what you were aiming for with this and while it has some rather nice innovations, it doesn't quite cohere. I think my complaints boil down to the posterior and the use of the claw/tooth pieces. The rump isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it looks quite comical, sabotaging the model's generally graceful appearance. The claw pieces in the torso are simply too angular. If you could somehow put them at 180 degrees opposite each other, they might work. The claw pieces in the leg form a nice construction, but they clash with the rest of it. They're too wide at one end, too thin on the other. That said, I wouldn't mind if you kept them and replaced the other leg-shells.

The winter wave is currently available on LEGO Shop Poland, which leads me to think that whomever told you that was wrong. The folks at shops are, in my experience, variably informed. I remember being told by a Toys R Us employee, in December of 2014, that BIONICLE was an old theme they didn't stock any more.

Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors
Quisoves Pugnat replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Makuta is trying to enslave the island. That's a bit more than petty jealously. Umarak might not be evil, though we don't know that for certain. Regardless, his mission brings him into conflict with the Toa. After all, the cybermen in Doctor Who aren't at all malicious, but their goal is still evil. -
While these are rather too indistinct to properly judge, they look rather more confident, overall, than the winter wave. The two most promising ones for me, right now, are Quake and Storm Beast. Lava Beast has weird legs, but it's hard to make out too much about him. Ekimu looks pretty cool, if somewhat generic and derivative of his previous form. The amount of trans blue is unexpected, but not necessarily bad. I don't see what the deal with Umarak the Destroyer is. Sure, he's not quite as striking as his Hunter form, but he looks rather promising to me. EDIT: Also, the leaks keep coming earlier and earlier, don't they?

Yeah. Not what one expects to find on a website promoting toys. I do hope that LEGO takes notice of whichever employee is writing them. -

Tahu vs. Preston Stormer draft
Quisoves Pugnat replied to Bigger Fish's topic in LEGO Action Figures
If nothing else, it's gloriously over the top. If you pull it of, I'll be quite impressed. I would, however, cut down on the dialogue. Stormer and Tahu are rather too chatty, seeing as they're trying to kill each other. "Yes, this is the right thing to do, beings like that are much too powerful to exist lest they go rouge." I'm reasonably certain that Tahu Mistika's armor was dark enough to be described as "rouge." =P -

To each his own, and all that, but they are supposed to be biomechanical. If nothing else, it gives them a unique feel.

From what I've read, they plan themes about a year in advance. So while 2016 is highly unlikely to be affected by 2015's reception, 2017 probably will, to some extent. Takua, for example, originated in Mata Nui Online Game, so his inclusion in 2003's sets and story wouldn't have been possible, if everything was set in stone two years beforehand.

I hope that the next constraction theme, whatever it is, strikes out on its own. Hero Factory suffered, in my opinion, for being a cut-price BIONICLE. I find it telling how much more natural the 2015 sets seemed, as if CCBS had been designed for them in the first place. I suspect that LEGO underestimated the extent to which folks would like the simplicity afforded BIONICLE by CCBS. Given the inherent greebliness of Gen1, I suppose that's not surprising. Hopefully, 2017 will take that element of last year's reception into account. Speaking of greebliness, what I find off-putting about the new armor-piece (which I admittedly don't have in hand) is the attempt to blend the CCBS shell-aesthetic with that of Gen1. Gen1's pieces had lots of gaps, which made the profusion of pistons work. They had an effect not unlike that of steampunk. The new piece lacks those gaps, which gives it a cluttered appearance.

It seems highly unlikely that the reception of the 2015 sets had any effects on the designs of those of 2016. LEGO designs its sets easily a year in advance. Pictures of the current wave leaked in September, after all. Also, you're making unfounded assertions about the designers' character. Doing a lousy job because you know a theme is ending would be extremely unprofessional. It would also be bizarre, when you consider that LEGO makes plenty of one-shot themes.

Bionicle 2016 Story Discussion & Rumors
Quisoves Pugnat replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
True, but seeing as the whole split mask-thing seems to stem from the appearance of G1's Vahi, down to the chap at Comic-Con calling it "half a mask," it's a safe bet. -

Quisoves Pugnat replied to VBBN's topic in LEGO Action Figures
Very interesting... This does seem to confirm that we'll get some sort of remake of the original Vahi. As for how this will play out, I imagine it will counteract the Mask of Ultimate Power. Perhaps it will restore Makuta to the way he was, prior to donning the MoUP. While we're on the subject, the preview for the first graphic novel suggests that the Mask of Time didn't speed up the planetary-alignment. Which begs the question, what did it do? -
Way cool! Thanks, Dorek! The art-style's a bit basic, but it's definitely more than passable. That shot of the Temple on the hill is gorgeous. And the dead Skull Spider looks adorable. Also, Vahi. Interesting. That at least explains the easter-eggs in the animations.
