  1. I generally build military models and cars, among other things, and haven't really made a construction vehicle before. Yet I have a family member who worked on Caterpillar vehicles for many years, so when I saw the 60074 Bulldozer set I thought it might provide a good base for modifying into a Cat D7 model as a gift. What a thought would be a minor mod eventually turned into a complete rebuild, retaining only the lower-level frame with technic pulley-wheel rollers, and the rear ripper design. I can update with photos when BrickLink parts are in. Until then, here is a render of the completed design. Photo update:
  2. I have to say, it looks a LOT better with the black-for-blue pin substitutions. If the set had been released like this and with Jetro's modularity mod and the much needed gearbox corrections, then I'd almost be able to overlook the inflated price—which itself could probably have been avoided by using normal BI and packaging, in which case it would have been a must buy for me. As it is, I think I'll still have to pass.
  3. You have to appreciate LEGO's commitment to technical accuracy here. I hear Porsche themselves are actually about to release an updated sequential 1-3-2-4 gearbox for the real 911 RS to give their racing drivers "a great driving and product experience". :P
  4. Thanks Jim for an outstanding and very detailed review. Typo? :) I have to disagree with this part though. The addition of Porsche information is not the only—or even the main—way in which these instructions seem unnecessarily inflated. From what I've seen there are very few parts added per step, and I suspect fully adequate instructions could have been produced (esp. considering the 16+ tag) at a fraction of the size, even including the additional Porsche info.
  5. It was the early Star Wars and Ferrari F1 ranges that brought me back to Lego, but more important for me was the discovery of LDraw and then BrickLink which took me beyond set collecting and into digital design and MOCing.
  6. Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. :)
  7. My 2009 Humvee design has remained virtually unchanged for a long time, but I've finally decided to upgrade it to a new version. The most significant change is the reduced wheelbase which greatly improves its overall proportions. While this involved removing the two seat pieces in the rear of the cabin, the model still fits four figures plus the gunner. Other improvements include a redesigned front hood, and removal of the black stripe that used to run along the sides under the roof. The design features opening doors, engine cover, and rear hatch, and the model is readily modifiable between regular (slope-backed) and command (square-backed) variants, each of which can be stripped down to Spec Ops configurations (with doors and hatches removed and smoke dispensers added). Instructions are available via the link in my signature. Click the images below for the full Flickr gallery.
  8. Role-play of conflict and violence is an important way for children to learn the social dynamics of conflict resolution, and I think LEGO have come to understand this. With the explosion of Star Wars models and superhero ranges I think it should be quite obvious that the capacity for violent play with LEGO has been significantly increased. However, they are clearly and quite consciously trying to strike a balance by allowing violent play in fantasy settings while avoiding the glamorization of real-world war and violence. It may seem a fine line at times, but I think the approach makes sense. I kind of respect LEGO for refraining from producing real world military models even when they know there is a market for them.
  9. At first I thought that was a typo. Actually seems accurate.
  10. I changed my name recently (via Mod PM) for consistency across forums. I am Spacemonkey in some places, but was BrickMonkey on all LEGO-related sites except this one. I only went with Spacemonkey when signing up because BrickMonkey was already taken by some non-active user. I was aware of the postcount requirement, but the staff here kindly waived that for me.
  11. Has anyone worked out what colours this can be built in (other than white and red)? Are sufficient panels and parts available in yellow or blue?
  12. Nice collection! What are the matching red and yellow models on the right side of the table?
  13. Thanks Paul! I appreciate the support.
  14. I've just finished setting up a new website for distributing instructions and would appreciate any constructive feedback members could offer, especially as relates to site content, navigation, typos, etc. Some instructions are free; others offered at a small cost. The goal is simply to cover the costs of maintaining the site. I haven't run a website before, so I imagine there is much that can be done to improve it. I know EB frowns on self-promotion, so other than a link in my signature this is the only time I will post about the site, yet it would be really useful to get some feedback from other Lego fans and builders as I launch this project. Thanks. www.bm-mocs.com
  15. Johnny-Five is brilliant, as is that midi-scale Imperial Shuttle. I'd buy either instantly. Anyone have a date or ballpark estimate on when we can expect Carl's Caterham to be released? Can we expect it to hit shelves in 2016?
  16. Thanks. I think the Ferrari is probably more accurate in overall shape than the McLaren. I'm not planning any more at the moment, but this is quite a fun scale to work at.
  17. Here's a shot of the two cars with a heavily tuned version of the 60113 Rally Car, which was also a large part of the inspiration for these builds.
  18. A piece I'd like to see would be a cross between these two grilles: I.e. a flat 1x2 tile with angled horizontal vents.
  19. This: NZ$600 / EUR 360 Have people really been asking for premium packaging with instruction books weighing as much as the model, and premium features like 'authentic' stickers and a handbag?
  20. I don't think it is fair to say that people are lacking in critical thinking just because they disagree with you on the importance of PPP as a comparison metric.
  21. Sorry, but the undeniable fact is that this is an expensive set, and people will be and are put off by a 300 Euro price tag. It has nothing to do with personal feel or gut reaction. Three hundred Euros is simply a lot of money for most people. And many are talking about the packaging and booklet because, while they are nice, it seems a lot of the cost has gone into these and the licensing rather than the actual set and functions. I'm not saying it's a bad set, or even that it is particularly bad value, but it is expensive and it could easily have been cheaper.
  22. The Porsche set is more expensive than any of these. That is why people are likely to be put off by the price. Price per part isn't really the point. The simple fact is that it is a very expensive set and doesn't offer that much in terms of technical features.
