Good additions. Perhaps the light bley arch on the magic shop could be replaced a reddish brown alternative? That may make it a bit more consistent.

Check out Brickstruct.com. You can buy instructions for a Helm's Deep MOC and Golden Hall of Meduseld. However, they're both huge so might not be for everyone.

[MOC] WIP ~20,000 piece Battle at Helm's Deep
Laphroag replied to samiam391's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I'm building this myself and it's cool to see it with minifigs. I know there are no more instructions for the next sections (deeping wall, inner keep etc) yet. Do you plan on waiting for the next instructions from Brickstruct or will you do the rest yourself?- 20 replies

My biggest concern is not the potential mix of "classic" castle and sci-fi, because that can result in some cool parts, colors and designs. But it might seem that it's only vehicles and figure packs. Something which i personally have zero interest in as I already have too many Uruk-hai ballistas

3x Uruk Hai Army. Love to find those small shops that have some random sets stacked away.

Mines of Moria at 40% off retail price. An online toy store was probably clearing out old sets before the holidays.

Do you always try to have a backlog of sets to build?
Laphroag replied to BirdOPrey5's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Like some others I don't really try to have a backlog. But I do have two sets at the moment and for some reason it is very nice to know they're at my disposal at any time. -
There are great MOCs, there are fantastic MOCs, and there is this. Simply a whole new level of awesome.

The MMV is waiting for me at the post office. In a sealed box.

Forestmen. I loved them when I was a kid and with the new techniques and overall better design of sets of today I think it could be......awesome.

My very personal opinion is that the tower does not fit in with your city. To me it just looks awkward due to it's size compared to the rest of your buildings. But I do understand that you want it there since it's a great (and currently highly valued) building. Have you tried a set-up without it?

Found the 6754 Family Home at 20% off retail price at a local toy shop. MISB Now, do I build it or sell it....

Interesting discussion, but this basically sums up my own view of it. Sure, there will probably always be those who try to artificially increase prizes and fraudulent resellers. But that's the prize you pay for the opportunity of getting retired sets. This is not different from any other hobby that includes buying collectibles (I think, I don't collect anything else really).

Here's a great tip to how you stop yourself from over spending money: Keep track of much you've spent. That way your guilty conscience will tell you when it's too much. At least it works for me.

For building my own creations: Space (80's era). I built and rebuilt so many vulgar spaceships. It was all about size, maximum amount of trans-bricks and antennas/discs everywhere. For playing: Castle. And especially the forestmen faction. I only had one set of forestmen (6054 - Forestmen Hideout) but it was awesome. Honorable mention: Pirates. I went into my dark ages in the early 90s so I only saw a few sets of pirates. But I'm pretty sure Pirates would have become my favorite theme if I hadn't entered the dark ages.

News LEGO Juniors 2014 News & Discussion
Laphroag replied to just2good's topic in Special LEGO Themes
At least the smallest ones will be. I "tested" it on my oldest son (soon to be 4). Bought him the Spiderman set and he managed to build it with some help. I picked out the pieces for each step and he put them together. He ended up MODing it a bit, but that is what Lego is for. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Laphroag replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
That may be a reason for good sales. But my impression is also that GE is very popular to modify into larger versions, meaning people buy more than one set. It doesn't seem that common with any of the other modulars. -
The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion

I hate Benny's SSS. Because when I got back from my dark ages I promised myself I'll only buy Creator and City/Town sets. Now the SSS will ruin that plan (and my economy).- 2,626 replies

MOC: Helm's deep extensions with Mines of Moria only + Layout
Laphroag replied to Skystorm87's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Looks good. But perhaps try to make the tower taller. Unfortunately I'm too much of a noob to figure out how myself -
I sometimes let my 3-year-old play with the set and even he just throws away the tree.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Laphroag replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I decided to go for town hall based on the rumors it will be next to get discontinued. I base my decision on my personal opinion that I can totally see both GE and PS selling better and be more popular. If they do however pull GE first it seems to me that it will be easily available outside Lego stores for a good amount of time due to it's popularity. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Laphroag replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Absolutely. I can buy all the current modulars but my significant other might object to that kind of spending. I was lucky enough to get the fire brigade about a month ago at retail price. The price has already increased by 20-25% since. That's why I want to focus on the next modular to go so I don't have to spend more money than necessary on it later. -
I came out of my dark ages not long ago and recently picked up 60031 City Corner on discount at TRU. The bus is awesome and the buildings are nice. Overall a good and cheap set to start off a town.
-
I was counting on Lego to retire the modulars in the same order as they were released (as they have done to the first ones). But it wouldn't surprise me if TH (and maybe PC?) goes before GE and PS. Personally I like GE and PS better than the two others and I can imagine they sell better. It doesn't take an MBA to understand why they would do that then. Now, how do I scrape together money fast enough to buy them all before they're retired....

I'm in the same position as the topic starter. Just getting into Lego again after 20+ years and I want to build a city. Personally I am going for the modulars, even though the price means it will take some time to get them all (not counting the discontinued ones). I got two reasons for that: First, they are awesome. Second, I think they are a good way of "learning" lego again. A lot has happened in the last 20+ years. Lots of new pieces that make way for new and interesting building techniques, and as far as I know the modulars are full of these techniques. As I go along with the modulars I might add in some smaller sets (like vehicles) and minifigs. And I'm on the constant look-out for bargains.
