Lego Mosaic Software
Lasse D replied to offsky's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I have first discovered this topic today, but want to weigh in on the research done on other software. I have also researched the software on the market and have come to a very different conclusion. If we take the four bullets from the previous post in particular. 1) Scale and Crop is supported in software like Bricktilism with live-updating of the final mosaic. It is, however, a function which I understand if users would like performed before importing into mosaic software. 2) "Posterize" is a central component in most mosaic software. You choose your colours on a palette (and most software supports discontinued colors) and the software makes the mosaic. I don't understand the obsession with discontinued colors. If you want to sell a product and ship bricks, then why focus on these colors at all? 3) Minimizing number of parts used is an interesting addition. I am currently working on this for my export to building instructions in my own software. 4) Software like Bricktilism exports to .ldr and .mpd files for building instructions. The main difference between your software and what you see elsewhere is that your competitors offer the software for free. I see now that the goal was not reached, and I'm sorry to see if that has put an end to the project. I just can't help but think that a more fair assessment of the currently available software might have resulted in a better approach to the project. -
" today I want to show what I had built outburst last night" You need to never stop that because this is excellent! Now. Can you make a "naked" one as well?

That was my first thought as well. Still. I will try to work out some alternative designs. So. The lower design is relative true to the boxing going on in the real model, while the upper version is way too simplistic. Using slopes on the sides of the lights (I have to purchase more blue slopes!) helps with the boxiness. It will now be easier to continue the relaxed surface up along the side of the front of the truck. I will keep trying alternatives. Edit Aug. 8 2014 I have rehosted the latest pictures on my private web page since Brickshelf seems to have problems. Now. I have tried a new type of grille. This one allows me to have all pieces in the front connected (some of the tiles were floating in the earlier versions). This one is my favorite yet. The top grille, however, is too wide while the "/"-logo is too slim (See the griddy picture for what the widths should be). I will try to change the dimensions. Update: August 26, 2014 Updates: - The logo is now 5 wide making the front more true to the original. - First attempt at motorizing: With two L-motors space is left between them allowing a lifting mechanism in the middle of the truck. - The Servo motor has been mounted but with additional spacing between the front axles compared to the MAN. Update: August 29, 2014 Updates: - Starting from scratch with the rear. The dual motor setup used too much space. - I have focused on finishing the cab. Currently the area underneath the windscreen seems a bit too slim. - Roof and especially mirrors will be a challenge. Update: August 31, 2014 Updates: - First version of full cab with interior. - New version of engine mount. Now only 2WD, but with lifting rear axle. - I prefer this grille design with the big square in the middle of the "/". Update: September 5, 2014 First attempts at making the lifting mechanism for the back. The rear axle is lowered when the arm goes down... perhaps I should make it work so that the axle is lifted instead? Update: September 6, 2014 The lifting mechanism now (almost) works and I have made the rear axle lift when the small wheels in the back are pushed down. Update: September 9, 2014 The lifting mechanism has been updated with larger wheels which create a better balance when the lifting mechanism interacts with the rear axle. I have also given an update to the sides and rear fitting so that the model reflects an actual truck which I see on a daily basis. The container is a very light construction. I am working on a more detailed container.

Well. Let's see how it goes. I have copied the frame of the MAN thanks to the building instructions so that I could get onto the front. The lower part is proving to be quite the challenge. Here is my first attempt at it: - I think I should change the headlights - both sides look wrong because of the white section. - The headlight section looks too blocky. I will try to use slopes on the sides, but this will also require a different headlight design. - This design doesn't allow for PF lights, which is a shame. - I should use black instead of DBG... or perhaps it will look better once I have built more. We will see. - The grilles, while being very true to the original, look to simplistic. Perhaps I should make them only 1 wide? Input is encouraged. I have barely begun :)

Model Team Definition

Honor. This time we were able to discuss this subject without any seemingly bad feelings. I say we did well :) -
Model Team Definition
Lasse D replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have a proposal for a definition of Model Team which I believe fits the sets that Lego has released in this line (excluding the dreamliner which is a misplaced sculpture set): A model team Model Team creations are: - Realistic large vehicles which are posable, but not scale models. This definition should make Model Team distinguishable from Creator... but also pretty much any "Model Team" MOC I have made since 2007... -
I for one sure hope it will be like that! The competition is completely free within the realm of Model Team which means that you can build any kind of vehicle. Given how creative people are at Eurobricks you can expect someone to come up with some truly creative models which allow the builder to go into depth with details, and thus really build what Model Team is all about. I will make a model which might be really, really close to the original visually, but it will be functionally equivalent to Technic models which seen in recent years, and based largely on the frame from my previous truck (The MAN TGS). I might come up with clever ideas for details, but the overall level of creativity will be rather low and the model will be bordering "have we not seen this 100 times before"? For purists like me it will be great to see a new Volvo FM in scale 1:25, but for the competition I expect more. I will personally vote for models which show a greater level of detail and creativity.

That is a good question. I have planned on using Power Functions for this model, but I could make a non-PF version to fit the competition rules. I will also have to shorten it considerably, but that is also no problem. To enter the competition with a normal 12 stud wide truck would probably not catch the attention of the voters, but then it will be awesome for the winners to say that they beat a veteran at his own game! I'm in!

Practise Posting Here!

Thanks, but then you should see the final version... which I will show right now. Here it is in the space layout of Klodsfest 2014 this weekend: As you can see, Sir Bugge is back as well! Side view. Here you can see how it is almost 10 base plates long! The last thing I got to add was a shield or tail for the rear section. The last profile shot before moving on to the details. A close-up of the battle in progress. Arya seems to have botched a certain famous strategy, The Iron Throne. The full command bridge. The antennae and detailing of the front. Here you can see how the rings line up. The frame had a straight hole through to the front. The repair droids landed on the floor more than once during set up. And finally a close-up of the side thrusters. This is it for now. I did not get to make a video, but I want to extend the ship for a 5 meter version with som new ideas. I will post new stuff in this thread once that work starts.

Thanks for the comments. I had to led you guys done for a while since I was too busy building, having to be done last Thursday. Here are the updates I did not get to put up in time: First I had the pods from the Eurobricks event mounted on a black frame for the front section. Lots of details to clear flat surfaces with studs. Then came the bridge, complete with an Iron Throne, Arya considering her battle plan and a large table with the battle currently going on. 4 pods of manoeuvring thrusters were added. I made the living quarters which will be used to hide the power supply. Unfortunately they require the frame to be flipped when being attached. Have you ever seen "The Core"? There was a plot point in something being stupidly designed because they didn't have time to do it properly... this is how I felt. And as a last update before going to the event. antennae and greeble was added to the front. I should do something with moving thrusters - I can do that on my next SHIP :D Up next: Pictures from the event of the final ship.

Scania Truck with crane
Lasse D replied to pihlbrick's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It is great to see my old Scania design still being used. I really like your models. If you want to update the cab, then I do have a new design (building instruction here: It should be easy to make the top flat instead of high. -
Thanks for the encouraging comments! I'm currently at the Eurobricks Event so I can't build as much as I want to. There is, however, still time to put some parts together. Here are the pods which are used for Helm, Navigation, etc. at the bridge: (Assembled in the chill-out area in Legoland Village, Billund... photo taken using my mobile potato) You are completely right. I will make a nice cover for the 9V power supply. It will become the living quarters and will be located below the bridge. The current plan is to: - Build/complete the bridge. I already have the part - I just have to put them together. - Build the living quarters/power supply cover. This I still have to design the details of. - Build a tail... which I still have to completely rethink! - Add details such as small boosters for small course changes, antennae, greeble, more fuel tanks, etc. And I have to be done by Thursday!

Thanks - I will keep up the updates. Here is what I managed to make today. First there is this little guy: Inspired by the set shown in the previous post he takes care of repairs and maintenance. This is a large ship, so I have two of these pods, each with 8 repair droids: The pods reside below the new solar panel section. This turned out to be a larger challenge than expected. As soon as the circles of bricks are not complete, the tension forces the structure apart. I had to come up with a less rigid way for constructing this section, and I have to rethink how to create the tail! Thanks. I would love to one day to build something like the Narada or a Klingon Bird of Prey.

One of my very first sets was 6830: Space Patroller It was a wonderful set where the two engines could turn into robots. I will use this kind of robots as repair droids for the SHIP. Coming soon, to a post in this thread: - Repair droids charging stations! - Even more solar panels! - First level of the command bridge. I can start working on this at 10PM tonight.

Yes. I got the shirt so that I could grow in it, or use it as a night gown. > lego911 Thanks. And congratulations to you too. Do you know which of your models you will be converting to a Legoland version?

Yesterday I finally got to mount the first engine: Update Today the work continues with detailing along the frame. I tend to choose the solutions that take the longest to complete... This detailing is expected to be done some time around 3AM or so. Update Decorating the frame continues. I have now finished decorating the aft section. Update I have finished the decoration of the frame primarily using 2x4 curved bricks. I had a bag of 500. Now I have 2 left. Update First try for adding fuel tanks. I can't find my white 4x4x6 panels, so I have to do with with these trans black until they turn up. These fuel tanks are, however, a bit too tall, so I have to find a more compact design. Update Sunday, May 4. This smaller and more rounded version of the fuel tanks turns out to work much better. Update It is time to mount the upper two engines. Here is a close-up of the detailing. Update This will be it for tonight. I have added shielding for the detailing shown in the previous update.

Well... I have been saving up for this for many years now. The idea started back in 2007 and I have been ordering white, black and trans blue parts ever since. Now it has simply become time for me to put those parts together. Next step was to copy the thruster: Here you can see how large they are compared to the ship: Now I just have to make their internal structure and mount them on the frame.

I am dedicating this topic to the slow progress of the construction of my first SHIP. It is a command vessel in the theme of Futuron. It will be roughly 10 base plates long and feature some moving parts. This ship is mainly a proof-of-concept. I'm trying to stress the bricks and see which kind of shapes look good in the scale. If you have ideas for input then please don't hold them back. Here is how it has progressed thus far in April 2014: The frame consists of a long triangle. This is hopefully strong enough for all the stuff I have planned to hang on it like a Christmas tree. Adding the slopes ot the side wing turned out to be too heavy for the connectors to hold up! I received an order of slopes to replace the rainbow of the front. The right wing was added and in this picture the "field generator" in the middle is actually spinning - similar to the botanical garden of my . The ring connecting the two wings has been added, completing the flow that starts from the front of the ship. The "FTL" drive rings have been added as well as the tail. The frame is getting decorated and I the pillars for the FTL drive rings are more sturdy with the additional decoration. I am currently working on the main thrusters. That is all for now. I will post further progress in the comments to come.

So you are telling me that with this set I can get 1x1 trans tiles for only 50DKK a piece!? That's great news!

As a computer scientist there are 10 figures in that series... I count in hexadecimals. As for the minifigures themselves: Sad Clown: He is lately known in the film "The Last Circus" which came out in 2010. Roman Commander: Decimation is originally from the Roman army. Bumblebee Girl: With six legs and four wings a bumblebee has a total of 10. Motorcycle Mechanic: Going back in history you will find one of the first companies to start motorcycle production on a non-prototype basis was Birmingham Small Arms Company which began motorbike production 1910. Grandpa: "When I was 10 years old I worked 10 jobs, each for 10 hours a week. Kids nowadays are wimps!" Revolutionary Soldier: The United States Bill of Rights of 1791 comprised the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. Baseball Fielder: The height of the pitcher's mound is 10 inches. Should I continue?
