I don't think so, as the 42070 is already motorised, and the 42065 is already both motorised and tracked. So, similar to the 42038-B? -

The depth may also be preliminary, the focus for now being on the front of the box. But, with 6 Xerion tyres, the model, and consequently the box, should indeed be quite large. -

Guys and gals, so far all we have is three names and one blurry preliminary picture. Isn't it a bit too early to pass judgement on the whole wave? Regarding what can be seen from the image, I'd really wish TLG would make up their minds about what shade of light blue to adopt. Regular blue, dark blue, medium blue, medium azure? IMHO just regular and dark would be enough. Also, the orange Power Functions bar on the box is currently quite bare, so I assume that the image of the controller is also a placeholder, and therefore the final product could have a 36T gear and/or come with two controllers. And, apart from the controller, nothing in the box says the PF version is the "old" 1.0... remember this year marks Power Functions' 10th anniversary, this would be a nice time to introduce PF 2.0 to Technic. [Edit] Oh, and the detail of the teddy bear is hilarious, nice touch! -

Well, on PLUG exhibitions we have a "trial" course for people to drive our 9398 in, and the crowds love it; so I definitely wouldn't really call it the worst set of the millennium... Sure, there are better sets, but there are worse ones, besides those I mentioned. But anyway, this thread is for the discussion of 2017 sets, so I'll end my digression. -

Sheesh, aren't we exaggerating a little? Worse than even 8433, or the polybags? -

It's a matter of taste, I guess. I like the 42008's design (only the tyres are too small, decently-sized tyres would only appear the following year) and I like this one's rugged design. -

Because kids aren't likely to see stormtroopers, AT-ATs or starfighters in real life. But I bet this subject has already been discussed to death on a zillion other threads around here, so no need to beat that dead horse again here. -

From Sariel's review, it appears the shovel can indeed touch the ground: Anyway, as with all LEGO sets, if you don't like some aspect you can always mod it. -

Also, could the fuselage shape constitute something resembling a lifting body? If so, the tiny wings would be a lot more "palatable". -

Maybe even easier at the front, like the Saab 37 Vigen or the Eurofighter Typhoon. But, given the set's size, price point and status as 1H flagship, I'd bet on elevons. -

Actually, the 42060 and the 42062 each contain one, although admittedly they contain a truck instead of being a truck. -

Agreed. I disliked the introduction of medium blue in the Hot Rod, as we already had normal and dark blues in Technic... then came azure in the Dragster, further worsening things. That's also why I didn't bother getting the 24 Hours Race Car and its bright green elements. -

But at least the 42066 is medium blue instead of azure, right? It's a bit ambiguous to me from the pictures. -

LEGO motors are able to work with greater voltages than the nominal 9V (see Philo's comparison page for details), but not by much, and that reduces their lifespan. I don't know if AA/AAA-sized lithium batteries have circuits in them to lower their intrinsic 3.7 V voltage to the 1.5 V a device expects from that battery size; at least they should have protection circuits since, unlike other battery chemistries, lithium-based can get very dangerous (fire/explosion hazard) of overcharged or overdischarged. If the battery doesn't have such a voltage reduction circuit, you should only use 1 lithium battery for every 3 "regular" ones, (1 x 3.7 ~= 3 x 1.2). -

Yes, at least in Atlantis submarines. -

In reality, LEGO has produced the 8275 and the 8043, which are both tracked and remote-controlled. But those are flagship sets, with a price tag to match. There was also a Mars Mission set (called "Crystal Reaper" or something like that), which contained instructions to add RC control. Now that I think about it, that one should give a good idea about the speed of the 42065, as I believe it also had M motors directly driving large sprocket wheels. Regarding batteries, LiPos can be quite small, such as this one, made for miniature quadcopters. For approximately the same capacity, a lithium rechargeable (3.7 V) is a lot lighter than three NiCd/NiMH batteries (3 x 1.2 V = 3.6 V). While there are indeed AA and AAA-sized lithium batteries, they can't be directly used instead of NiCd/NiMH due to providing more than triple the voltage. The comparison I made earlier is about a rechargeable Li-Ion PF battery being lighter than an AAA battery box (which is the same size). The 8275 is unrealistically quite fast, as it uses XL motors directly driving the sprockets. The 42065 should be even faster, as M motors put out more RPMs than XL. -

Actually, lithium batteries (Li-Ion and LiPo) are a lot lighter than NiCd or NiMH batteries of equivalent capacity, that's why they're the only choice for RC aircraft: just compare the weight of a PF rechargeable battery vs. a loaded PF AAA battery box. If the battery box of the 42065-B is located sufficiently towards the rear, it might counterbalance the cabin and the IR receiver. Still, it'll always be more wobbly than the A-model, which is longer and has a lower centre of gravity. What I'm concluding from this discussion is that, despite the fact that the 42065 is technically an extremely simplistic set (little more than a PF RC parts pack), it's good food for thought regarding the design of tracked vehicles. And, considering the Technic mission of teaching about and stimulating interest in mechanics, that's a good thing. -

It shouldn't be too hard to attach the lime L-beam (to which the two road wheels are connected) to a single point of articulation, centred on its "corner" pinhole. That way, the two wheels balance each other out, like the pendular axles on the 8284 and the 42030, and no springs would be needed. -

I see what you mean. It's a shame, though, as a rocking bogie wouldn't appear difficult to make. Still, at least the B-model is a complete rebuild, not just a variation of the body (hello 9398) or attachment (hello 8110 and 42054). In this case it's not possible, as the motors drive the tracks directly and the set only includes one size of track sprocket. The only thing that can be done is to change the track geometry (which was done), but that doesn't change its speed relative to the motor. -

Thanks for those images, I hadn't seen them yet. There's definitely a rocker bogie on each track, made by having the lime 3x5 beam (which holds two sets of road wheels) attached to the main frame using only a single pin. The strange part is that the black beam, to which the lime one is connected, also appears to be attached with a single pin... As for gearing, unfortunately I now see there is none, like on the A-model. This will surely hurt stability when starting/stopping. -

Returning to the sets' discussion... It appears that the B-model of the 42065 has rocker bogies for four of its road wheels (one bogie per track), which should make it as interesting to build as the A-model. However, given that it has a higher centre of gravity (taller tracks and body), it should topple over more easily than the A-model during sudden accelerations and stops... unless the set includes gears specifically for the B-model, to reduce speed and increase stability and power. -

Hmm yes, I see what you mean. Still, both the tread sprockets and the pulley wheels used as road wheels look darker than the white beams and panels for the body. I hope it's an effect of the photo, just like the brown 5L axles with stop look red in some images, instead of them being actually VLBG: it's frustrating to make something using the parts that came with my 8527.
