Heroica RPG - Quest #90: A Trip to the Circus
StickFig replied to Waterbrick Down's topic in The Heroica Archive
Matthias is at first ambivalent that Bastala has survived, decides that enough death has occurred today. He only hopes that she and Grishnod will find a way to live together. The sound of terms finally being offered is sweet to Matthias' ears; perhaps something good will come of all this. He wonders, though, if giving Raguel to the orcs is not just one more act of vengeance. Would it not be better if King Valentino were responsible for justice - be it a noose or freedom - for those in his nation? In the meantime, he continues to pile battle debris as neatly as possible for disposal and begins to push and pull orc bodies into peaceful, respectful positions where they lie, shuddering a little occasionally at the sight of blood pools and dead faces frozen in pain. -

Matthias arrives at the troupe's gathering point and wordlessly hands his borrowed bow back to Dreyrugr. -

"No, not metal, but a son. And hopefully not a fool either," Matthias begins, but is interrupted by Guts' rambling. Surprised by the raider's sudden change of demeanor, Matthias doesn't know what to say. Is this the same hero who moments earlier was ordering him and others to sacrifice themselves in battle? The same man who had so much vile anger towards the paladins? Matthias shakes his head, downcast. "We have worked and fought here," he looks to the circus troupe, "and across Baltarok for peace. The Orcs and the Kingdoms might both be in mourning or burning to the ground had not at least a few leaders on each side had that same dream. Let this bridge and this peace stand or tear it down - as you said, 'Many orcs died here', but the hand that drove them was not ours. For now, I can agree with Master Holla that it is time for us to leave. If you truly desire peace, we cannot provide it for you. I am sure Heroica might send diplomatic mediators, but we cannot give you a peace you do not want." With that, the gnome walks away from Valentino, Hoke, Guts, Nerwen, and Tarvalk, moving to help the circus troupe recover whatever was left of their wagon, livelihood, and lives. -

Matthias indicates King Valentino with a glance. "I would hope that it will be many years before David comes once again to power. King Valentino, who wants peace, will have those years to discipline his son. Raguel is the one responsible for the slaughter; the prince may be excused for Raguel's evil guidance." The gnome faces King Valentino, and looks again with Hoke for the Speros. "King Valentino, will you free all the orcs in your realm and return them to their clans? Will the other kingdoms do so as well?" -

I figured as much. Thanks for clarifying. Eyeing the growing pile of gold and weapons Lady Nerwen is heaping up at the base of the tower, Matthias' eyes widen. It's more riches than he's ever dreamed of owning... although he's sure his father has a stash somewhere - that gnome always has plenty. Matthias will take one of the "60g + Sword of the Red Lizard (WP:10, fire-elemental, longsword) + 1 [Grand Potion]" sets if no one else wants it, but he would only be taking the swords to sell to other players (or the Marketplace as a last resort). Otherwise he will take "120g + 1 [Grand Potion]". -

Matthias is filled with relief as the battle ends, and he's happy to see the king finally arrive. "Does anyone see Grishnod?" he wonders out loud, hoping that if the two more diplomatic leaders could see the bodies strewn about the bridge - which is still standing - they might be moved to create peace. Matthias will take the "60g + Sword of the Red Lizard (WP:10, fire-elemental, longsword) + Sword of the Red Lizard (WP:10, fire-elemental, longsword) + 1 [Grand Potion]" if no one else wants it, but he would only be taking the swords to sell to other players (or the Marketplace as a last resort). Otherwise he will take "120g + 1 [Grand Potion]". See edit here. The gnome realizes he's forgotten something important as Cinna helps Boris up, and runs forward to find Glup and Nelvyn. Thankfully, they're alive, but both badly wounded. Too small to carry either one of them, Matthias helps Glup to her feet and together they pull Nelvyn up. "Purpearl, can your healing staff help these two circus warriors?" he queries. -
TL;DR (just kidding! The whole Tippyverse is actually a pretty interesting read!) It's called Narrative Causality.

Nope, was just commiserating - sharing sorrow and a concern for our original party leader. "I don't have any either," the gnome agrees, "and I think the whole group is probably almost out of essences as well. We certainly didn't bring enough healers to this battle. I'm glad you had your staff or it might have been worse." Matthias sees the black knight stretching out and wonders if the vampire is callous by nature or has built cynicism as a result of many battles. Looking around, though, he realizes that it might not be either one - the battle is more or less under control and like himself and Purpearl, Dreyrugr simply knows that he can do no more against the paladins and has no healing powers to help his allies. While Dreyrugr seems content to sleep while others fight and Purpearl has shown restraint throughout the battle, keeping herself alive and helping as much as possible, it weighs heavily on Matthias' mind that he feels so useless, especially with Cinna, Glup, and the others lying in front of him. -

Matthias follows Tesni back across the bridge, stopping at the Eastern Front where Cinna, his party leader, lies. He makes eye contact with Purpearl and looks pointedly at Cinna, shaking his head and hoping that someone can heal her. The ranger looks across the border towards Cassandra and Raguel, but realizes there's naught for him to do but get in the way and get stomped on if he tries to help. I've been planning Warden since I signed up for Heroica but after this battle, Matthias is going Druid, definitely. -
Awesome. Welcome to Eurobricks! What do you like to build? What are your favorite LEGO themes?

Hearing Lady Nerwen's request, Heweyrt, pulls himself together and makes Nerwen lucky. If Glup is raised (i.e. someone uses an incense), she will move to the Central Tower. -
Concur.

If he is it isn't listed... but I'm trusting the QM! In any case, with the "let Hoke do it" strategy, it shouldn't be needed anyway. Heweyrt, disappointed in his repeated failures to bring Dreyrugr luck, decides to do nothing for a round to try and focus. See edit 2 here. -
The previous round wasn't that much better....

Matthias hears the cries of pain at the East end of the bridge and shudders as his optimism, so high minutes earlier, diminishes once again. "What will it take to kill those two paladins?!" he wonders, as he administers the essence to Tesni. Heweyrt, disappointed in his repeated failures to bring Dreyrugr luck, decides to make Dyric Rone lucky this time (assuming he attacks Cassandra/Raguel; Heweyrt will make Dreyrugr lucky otherwise), just to see if it works. See edit here. -
Ouch! Are we sure Cassandra isn't rolling loaded dice?!

Matthias, trotting towards the West end of the bridge, just catches Benji's comments.... He shakes his head, not impressed by the lack of unity among the party or the whining of some of the older heroes, and continues moving toward Tesni's inert form. "One day I'll be able to heal," he mutters, wishing there was some way he could get everyone to pull together. -

Unfortunately that's an error, and it should say this: "Cleric" refers to one of Cassandra's specials. -
As an expat living in South Korea, I need only look north to notice those drawbacks... From the Rules & FAQ thread: As soon as the Baltarok quests are over, I'm planning on trading for a new weapon for Matthias - finding something that's rotting in someone's inventory rather than making those Marketplace Merchant capitalist pig-dogs richer than they already are (I assume). In any case, I haven't seen much trading go on between players that would be made any easier by a special topic, but I am planning on having Matthias "post" a wanted ad next to the quest board in the hall. I hope that's not pushing the rules of what characters are allowed to do? P.S. - If anyone has any ranged weapons lying around gathering dust and wants to make a couple of hundred quid quick, send me a note!

Matthias imitates Thormanil's imitation of Guts and adds, "And I'm gonna kill that coward elf mage!" The gnome laughs heartily as he heads to the Western Border to revive Tesni. As he passes Purpearl in the Central Tower, the ranger smiles at her and rolls his eyes as if to say, 'That guy is a little much, huh?'. Heweyrt makes Dreyrugr lucky. I concur with this assessment. If Hoke wants to continue fighting from the back row, he should go to the Eastern Front and then cast a spell at Cassandra. -

Matthias, slightly surprised that he's finally been noticed but glad to have something worthwhile to do, accepts the essence from Benji, raising his crossbow in a quick salute before turning towards the West end of the bridge. Heweyrt attempts to make Dreyrugr lucky. -
If Hoke's a glass cannon most of the newbies are glass BB-guns.

That may be right, but it's the fact that he replied to someone asking if they needed to take two actions to move two sections away and he said "No" that makes me think otherwise. -

No, you can travel to any section that isn't currently occupied by or behind enemy lines. And so the mechanics change once again? Matthias continues to urge his companions on, but realizes he cannot affect the battle's outcome and so does nothing. -

Actually, I'm fairly certain we can move from any unoccupied section to any other unoccupied section in one turn. However, it would take three turns - one for Matthias to receive an essence, one for him to move, and one for him to revive Tesni. We can still try it if anyone wants to (and has an essence to hand Matthias - Benji and Dyric both have essences and are in the same section, although I think Benji needs both his actions to survive some free hits coming up...).
