Heroica RPG - Quest #90: A Trip to the Circus

OoC: I'm assuming Matthias isn't actually asleep? Matthias repeats his attack, hoping that eventually the spores won't grow back. -

With the help of the remedy, Matthias fights through the effects of the sleeping spores and repeats his attack. -

Matthias, excited to see a hit but less excited to see the spores reappear, repeats. -

Matthias listens to Purpearl and then steps forward to attack from the front row. He puts a hand on Dreyrugr's side - as high as he can reach. He's visibly afraid of losing another member of the party. "Step back, you're too close!" -

Matthias, slightly miffed that Purpearl got all the credit for calling Ugroot and Vinnear the truth-tellers, forgets the slight as enemies appear. He points his crossbow at Spore Cluster from the back row and pulls the trigger. -

OoC: Just to be certain because I'm a newbie, Vinnier and Vinnear are the same? Matthias looks from messenger to messenger, bewilderment large on his small face. "Both Vinnear and Nevron have spoken well of Ugroot. Ugroot spoke well of Vinnear from the beginning. Might Ugroot and Vinnear be two who are speaking truth?" The gnome looks to Cinna for wisdom. -

OoC: Sorry, unforeseen loss of internet since my last post. Matthias is glad to hear Baradock agree to the proposed course of action - and he's glad to hear that there is still a way to complete their secondary? tertiary? mission of retrieving Valentino. "I'm with Cinna and Baradock. Let's do it." -
Matthias is surprised to have been addressed by name. "Goodbye," he manages, wondering what will happen next.
-
Matthias nods his agreement. The debate has gone on too long. He can't believe that the party seems about to split and come to blows once again. "Clan Irlaz gets Grishnod, we get Valentino and take him back to the Red Lizards, nobody goes to war. This should be easy."

"Not lately." Matthias mumbles.
-
Matthias looks sidelong at the assassin. "It's almost as if you read my mind." The gnome switches his focus to Guts. "What do we do now?"
-
Matthias is slightly buoyed by Alexandre's words, and slightly buoyed to see Baradock stand, despite misgivings about the big barbarian. On reflection, he decides he has misgivings enough about the entire Heroica idea and it's better to simply rest in the relief that they are still alive.
-
"PLEASE!" the gnome shouts, bursting. "Everyone is here, everyone is alive. We still have things to do - things we're being paid to do. Let's just shut up and get to work - I can't imagine the situation that led to the riot is any less volatile since we just killed a bunch of them." Matthias' glare passes over the group of heroes - all more experienced than he, and for the most part less battered - and he begins to take stock of their surroundings, looking especially for more rioters or threats and a place to rest in his bedroll. He can't understand the bickering, the divisions in the party - what is it Heroica stands for, he wonders?
-
Matthias comes back to awareness as Purpearl and Guts are arguing. He simply continues to lie on his back as his fellow heroes argue. What are they so worried about? When Guts finally flings a small pouch of coins and a bottle in his direction, Matthias sits up, pockets the items, and slowly climbs to his feet, pulling his crossbow out of the pile of roots, dirt, and fallen rioters with some difficulty. Thankfully it's still intact - which is more than can be said for the naive ideal of Heroican loyalty and virtue which had inspired him to become a "hero". He's no more than a mercenary, and he knows it now.
-
Matthias is vaguely aware of the noise of battle but is too incoherent to even struggle against the rioters' bodies fallen near and over his prostrate form.
-
Lately for Matthias it seems to be by killing (KO'ing?) all the challenging but short heroes...
-
We're doing our best - thanks for the compliment.
-
Matthias switches targets as the last dead root is cut away by Alexis' overpowering attack, but the rioters are too much for him, towering over his gnomish frame, and he goes down with a crunch in the press.
-
Matthias notices another hero fall as his next bolt slams into the dead root. He repeats his attack, grim determination but little hope on his face.
-
Matthias sees his bolt strike true and is momentarily satisfied, before he realizes that Guts, Purpearl, and the quiet barbarian have all fallen. As he takes in the scene, a horrible sound passes his lips - what passes for a gnomish primal scream. "NOOOO!" The tiny adventurer steps around Baradock and Purpearls' fallen forms, placing himself between them and the rioters, but he's too small to shield them. He reloads his bow and repeats his attack.
-
Matthias' foe is assassinated so he fires a wild shot towards another target. Gratified, he watches his bolt thud into a dead root... and he's relieved to see that the tendril assailing Baradock is cut down as well. He shakes off his feelings once again, though, and without a word reloads to attack Dead Root B from the back row.
-
Matthias watches the root attack Baradock, and while his first instinct is to help his party-mate escape the root, the memory of betrayal rises in his mind so he returns to his own target. Finally the gnome breaks his days of silence. "I've been attacked on this trip by everyone BUT the Orcs." He repeats his attack on Dead Root D from the back row.
-
Matthias nods approvingly, grateful that his leader is not barging into another awful fight. The gnome looks on in horror as Rusealote begins her attack, aghast at the prospect of heedless battle. He looks around for comfort, suddenly, in the presence of the heroes around him, but his eyes fall on Baradock and comfort is lost. Who might betray the party again? With sigh of resignation and a nod of agreement, Matthias attacks Dead Root C from the back row.
-
Planning on continuing to use that for a bit of character dev with Matthias - good opportunities should not be wasted! Hooray! Wait, does Matthias still count as a newbie after his first quest?
