My intuition says that it's rolled for each member of a mob independently... my experience with Heroica rules says that my intuition is probably wrong, it's probably rolled only once per mob but only kills one member, not the entire mob. Zeph, I also just realized (been reading through Matthias' history) that Matthias shouldn't have any plain Opals, so the one he lent Parvati must be an Ethereal Opal, and that the Fireball Extraordinaire should be Ice elemental in addition to its other properties.

Matthias gets right to the point. "Charge!" Battle Order > Lane: Bombard (Doomsday Bomb) Medusa: Spear v. Mob D Throlar: Mopagsaber v. Captain > Soliman: Spear v. Mob B > Darksten: Bow v. Wermhiem > Darksten: Bow v. Mob C > Parvati: Spell (Diamond) v. Mob A > Matthias: Heal v. first injured party member; if none, Extraordinaire v. Mob A > Cedric: Untie any tied-up party member; if none, wait > Johnny: Untie any tied-up party member; if none, wait Barkley: Bite Wermhiem Strategy Discussion Lane starts with Bombard, which doesn't count as targetting anyone (so he can't be hurt) but may take out a significant chunk of our enemies if he rolls well (if he rolls a Shield, we're done here*; really we should have used the Nostrum on him). As a cannoneer, he belongs in the back row. Medusa goes next, enraged so she has to stay in the front row, but her health and SP mean she'll be able to take the hit from the Captain if Throlar rolls poorly. Throlar goes between Medusa and Soliman; they'll all be able to weather his Special if it is rolled. Soliman should be able to take a hit from Mob B even if the Captain hits him, as long as he's in the back row. Darksten is high on drugs, so he has two good hits; a Shield doesn't help us with the Captain or Wermhiem, but might thin out the mobs; a Critical Hit will be good against Wermhiem though and Darksten doesn't take double damage from him. Parvati does low damage and has low health, so she takes the least powerful mob. Neither of her weather spells are particularly helpful. Matthias bats "clean up" so that we get max benefit if he rolls Shield. If no one is hurt, he attacks the first mob standing because his cannon will also hit Wermhiem. Cedric and Johnny untie anyone that the mobs manage to tie up (including Matthias, which is why they're after him in the battle order); Barkley bites Wermhiem because the Captain is immune to negative effects. *Lane Damage Calculation: Cannoneer Shield = (WP + Level + Bomb Damage) x 3 Cannoneer Great Bombard = WP x 2 + Level + Bomb Damage Cannoneer Bombard = WP + Level + Bomb Damage Cannoneer Sash: WP = WP + Bomb Damage Lane Doomsday Shield = ((20 + 99) + 40 + 99) x 3 = 774 damage per enemy Lane Doomsday Great Bombard = (20 + 99) x 2 + 40 + 99 = 377 damage per enemy Lane Doomsday Bombard = (20 + 99) + 40 + 99 = 258 damage per enemy

"Others may make better use of them than I. Master Darksten, especially with his luck already assured, is deadly when hastened as well, though many of our enemies may be able to dodge his killing blows, and any one of us could use the ability to hit harder... save those; you can deploy them as needed as the battle unfolds."

"You're right, of course, although it didn't look like he was still kicking to me - I hope we can save him," Matthias remarks with an uncharacteristic frown as he pulls ether from the wind to heal Soliman, Darksten, Throlar, and himself before downing another tonic. The druid's surprised to find Medusa in perfect health despite her having been nailed to the wall. "Glad to have you two reunited," he notes to the sisters. "Let's patch up, down a few performance enhancing substances, and get after 'em again. Master Cedric, nice job you and our friend there getting everyone united. If you would be so kind, Master Darksten and I could use those Nostrums, and you may be able to make use of these." The gnome hands 8 Bones, 2 Elixirs, 4 Remedys, and 2 Tonics to Cedric, then passes the Doomsday Bomb to Lane. "I also recommend anyone else with essences or the like in their packs hands 'em off to Master Cedric, and if you have extra bombs, so much the better for Captain Lane. Make your preparations; we're heading back in because I'm not letting slavers away and I want to know who in the High Kingdoms is behind this." Just a reminder, Zeph, that Throlar has his weapons back.

If anyone has other ideas, I'm open, but this should complete our objective without us getting killed, and if Zeph allows it (no idea why he wouldn't) we can buff up (now that we have everyone untied and available) and go back in for the EXP and loot.

Matthias watches the slaver captain's cannon decimate his party and decides to change tack completely. "New plan: everyone untie Medusa, quick!" Battle Order > Throlar: Untie v. Medusa (Tied up x4) > Darksten: Untie v. Medusa (Tied up x3) > Parvati: Untie v. Medusa (Tied up x2) > Soliman: Untie v. Medusa (Tied up) > Cedric: Untie v. Lane (Tied up) > Johnny Everyman: Untie v. Lane (Untied!) > Lane: Untie v. Medusa (Untied!) > Matthias: Smoke Bomb Barkley: Bite anyone who tries to stop us

You might be right! Matthias, grumbling in a bass voice that seems too low to come from a tiny gnomish frame, gives his cannon a shake. "Fire, darn you!" He looks up to see Barkley ineffectually nipping at the slaver captain. "Sir Barkley, perhaps he's not your best target - try that foul-smelling drunken sailor!" Battle Order Barkley: Bite Wermheim Cedric: Untie v. Parvati Johnny Everyman: Untie v. Parvati > Parvati: Spell (Diamond) v. Mob B Lane: Untie v. Self Soliman: Spear v. Mob C Throlar: Mopagsaber v. Captain > Darksten: Bow v. Wermheim > Matthias: Extraordinaire v. Mob A Medusa: Wait Glancing towards Medusa, still chained to the wall, Matthias' regret is plain to see. "Hold on, Lady Medusa, we'll get to you as quick as we can!"

I'm so confused. Did Darksten and Matthias lose their turns somehow? How did Wermheim and Mob A get free hits?

Yeah, good thinking. I'm kinda hoping we get lucky with some of Matthias' rolls and it doesn't come to that.

I figured that, since you specified something similar for the "tied up" party members, you must have just forgotten to do so for Everyman and Barkley. But Barkley also can't "target enemies" according to your post above. Also, Cedric should still be carrying the Doomsday Bomb, which may become important later....

Matthias sighs, resigned to the inevitable battle, and fires at Slaver Mob A. "Watch their leader - he's got a cannon like mine! Good thinking, Master Cedric - the faster you can get them all free the better!" Switching languages for the first time in what seems like forever, Matthias calls out to Barkley. "Sir Barkley, good to see you! Mind biting that ugly guy with the cannon?" Battle Order, suggested actions (and strategy discussion) > Lane: Cannon (Bombard) v. Mob B (Lane can suvive the Captian's hits; Zepher, this counts as targetting Mob B, right? If not, no bombard)[/color] Throlar: Mopagsaber v. Slavers Captain (Soliman, Throlar, Darksten, Matthias, and Lane are the only ones who can take the Captain's hit; Throlar should have his Mopagsaber back since Cedric returned it after the last battle) > Darksten: Composite Bow v. Wermheim (Darksten can take the Captain's hit and also doesn't take double damage from Wermheim) > Matthias: Extraordinaire v. Mob A (Matthias' cannon will do quadruple damage to Wermheim, A, and B in this position) Barkley: Bite v. Captain > Cedric: Untie v. Soliman > Johnny Everyman: Untie v. Soliman (Soliman is first priority to untie since he has high health to tank the Captain) > Soliman: Untie v. self (He'll be free at this point and ready to join next round) > Parvati: Untie v. self (2 actions until untied) > Medusa: Untie v. self (4 actions until untied)

Hearing Darksten's comment, Matthias fishes out his own Magic Compass as they walk and asks it to point first to Medusa, then to the slavers that bought her, and finally to any ambush ahead of the party, watching distrustfully.

"I am certain none of them know me well; I am but a wee free man and largely beneath their notice," Matthias laughs, "but I daresay I must know someone they'd recognize. My name is Matthias, Captain Lane, though I don't fault you for not remembering." Matthias nods, but his face makes it clear he is not convinced. "It's too easy. If that captain knew of something crazy going on, he would have resisted even Captain Lane's search. No, I think either we're about to be ambushed, or the Bonapartes are in on the slaving, or both," he laments quietly, so that only Parvati can hear. "I pray Orrik your instincts are correct and not mine."

Matthias mostly fears that it's all for nothing - that no matter how much good Heroica does, no matter what they change in the world, the world will still just be the world.
-
Matthias wonders if he should just let Wineghilm continue to do the talking, since the dwarf had done so well with the dockmaster, but senses that the ambassador card had not played well. "Our organization is well-known to the Bonapartes; perhaps they would not be pleased to find slavers operating out of their harbor," he says evenly, addressing both captains. "An Orc girl is missing, sold to slavers who have passage booked for the High Kingdoms. This ship is the only one which fits those conditions...." he lets the words hang in the air, hoping to gain some insight based on their reactions to a few key words. Sorry all, went to visit family in rural Appalachia (no cell service) for the weekend and their internet went down - perfect! Nice job finishing the harbormaster.

"You might be right," Matthias nods quietly to Cedric, "but if so, we'll have to check every ship in the harbor. That could take weeks, and it'll certainly be too late." "So give us a list of ships headed to the High Kingdoms, or we'll have the City Watch in here to rifle through all your paperwork for evidence you're a part of the slavers' conspiracy. Who knows what they might find? And then the destruction they'll levae in their wake - some friends of mine in the City Watch, but you can't say they're very ...circumspect or careful in their duties. Come to think of it, neither are we, and we're here already." Doing his best to keep up an intimidating front, the tiny hero decides to press his demands with the inebriated harbormaster. "How about you just hurry up with a list, and we'll amuse ourselves in the meantime by perusing that book you're covering." Oh snap! Did this just turn into a quest about the re-introduction of Orc slavery in the High Kingdoms? Matthias will be pissed!

"Suit yourself," Matthias winks "although 'some people' might consider what you're doing kidnapping." "You tell us - are you drunk at your station? We're looking for an Orc girl, or the slavers that have taken her, or a ship rushing for the High Kingdoms... seen any of those?"

Zeph, did you give Matthias his 20 gold for KOs this battle (Tubbs and Melissa)? Matthias nods to Bert and tosses each guard a pouch of 20 gold. "Your share of the loot, gentlemen - working with Heroica can have its benefits. Now we're off!" Tossing Soliman, Cedric, Darksten, and Wineghilm each another pouch of gold (and keeping one for himself), the undersized party leader doles out the rest of the loot. He glances towards Soliman and Pavati to confirm their intent. "To the docks!" Almost before his shots find their target, Matthias is wrapping ether into nurturing torques around Throlar, Darksten, and Soliman. Only when he is satisfied that everyone among the frailty is back on their feet does he uncork a tonic for himself, then turn to the groaning harvest of their labor. "Watchman Andrew, Private Bert, thank you for your assistance. I believe you will want to haul whichever of these still live away, but first I want to know," he looks hard at their vanquished foes, "where is the Orc girl? Where is she 'long gone' to? You are beaten, doombringer. What do you know of the girl?" He glances back towards the others, especially Parvati and Soliman, to see if they have more specific questions.
