  1. Don't worry - we know the feeling! Thanks again for another fun story - I'm beginning to feel like Matthias may as well be a Zepher NPC since he's been in so many of your recent quests!
  2. "Sungold Alliance?" Matthias looks puzzled; it's obvious that he's still not caught up on events since his journey to Etheria. "Are they a new House in the City?" The gnome rubbs his head confusedly until Ziegfried speaks up, then the memory arrives. "Ah, of course!" Fishing out the Toxic Hood from a pouch, Matthias extends it towards the imp. "Zeus charged me 200 gold. I had quite forgotten why I bought it."
  3. Zepher, can we get final stats?
  4. "Perhaps; perhaps we will only become as corrupt as the Old Gods themselves. In the meantime, well..." Even Matthias isn't sure what to do in the meantime, or even what 'the meantime' means to an immortal. "What's this about a Sungold store? Are you talking about that green knight Cedric? I am wondering where he collects his wares." Interrupted plesantly from his covetous eyeing of Ziegfried's order with Pretzel and dealings with Uq, Matthias looks sidelong to Hybros. He always enjoyed being able to look people in the eyes, rather than the knees. "Very commercial, I think. I managed to waste quite a bit of gold. How are things with you?"
  5. HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY
  6. "Centuries seems a long, long time, Master Arthur. A long, long time. What good is there for us to live so long? I am beginning to fear that I will only live to see all my good works destroyed."
  7. "Oh, nothing of terrible interest. The Court of Demons has taken residence in the Hovels; there are slavers kidnapping Orcs here in the city and dragging them to the High Kingdoms for sale. The usual." Even Matthias isn't sure if the sarcasm in his voice is true world-weariness, actual anger, or joking fun. "How have you been? Seen anything interesting lately?"
  8. Matthias groans comically at his table.
  9. Matthias wanders into the Hall, orders a cider, and sits at an empty table.
  10. Matthias accepts his etheral Opal back from Parvati. "Clearly none of us know enough about Zane to understand the danger he poses to all of us, and everyone else too. For your sake, I hope nothing more comes of any of his ambitions, and that he retires to a quiet life somewhere on the coast of nowhere. But I doubt it." Matthias is clearly troubled. "Peace to you, Lady Parvati." The gnome tips his hat, and heads for the gate of the hovels, fiddling with his Extraordinaire (Bearer of the Anvil, +1 WP) idly as he drags it along. Thanks for another fun quest Zepher!
  11. "Zane and I drank ...together... from the Fountain of Youth." Matthias fights the color he feels rising to his face and wonders why he is embarrased. "Apparently, neither of us is entirely certain of the effects, even now." Changing course in the conversation, Matthias anticipates his companions' further questions about Zane. "Zane holds a host of souls within him; it is anyone's guess what immortality, if not invulnerability, means to one like him. But he is powerful, as I said."
  12. Matthias hands a mead, smelling salt, and nostrum each to Darksten and Throlar, pocketing the third for himself. Cedric's already gotten a Mead, a Smelling Salts, a Mulled Wine, a Venom, two Remedies, and a Health Core; we'll spread the consumables back around. "How does it feel to be immortal, Zane? Your power seemed unmatched when last we met, and I cannot imagine it has waned since. What more have you learned from the gift of the waters?"
  13. Matthias nods curtly to the orc in jester's garb. "Zane." It takes him a moment to recognize the other newcomer, but it finally dawns and he tips his hat. "And peace to you, Lady Felix. I am surprised to meet you here."
  14. Maths, actually
  15. Catching Lane's bag of gold and gathering the loot from the slavers' remains, Matthias hands it out to the party, doing his best to make the division equal. Loot Distribution Cedric: Mead Darksten: 160 Gold Matthias: Trickster's Mask of the Human Loot So Far Cedric (≈ 335 gold, 4 exp) - Chicken Drumstick (270 gold and a trip to Etheria), 65 gold Darksten (≈ 325 gold, 3 exp) - Rusty Dagger (20 gold), 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), 225 gold Matthias (≈ 285 gold, 4 exp) - 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), Trickster's Mask of the Human (150 gold), 55 gold Throlar (≈ 415 gold, 2 exp) - City Watch Halberd (30 gold), Grating Stone (250 gold plus membership in the Crescent Union), 4x Shattering Arrow (4x20? gold), 65 gold MINUS Fire Bomb (5 gold), Lightning Bomb (5 gold) If anyone has heartburn with the loot divison, let me know. I tried to slightly favor Throlar, then Darksten due to their missing out on EXP. I am not counting the consumables that Cedric's been holding for the party; if anyone wants specific ones, ask him for them before we split up at the end. "Thank you, Sir Barkley," Matthias growls to the dog. "I very much appreciate it," the gnome notes. "Perhaps I will be able to become slightly better known among their number." "She sure is a hothead," Matthias remarks to Soliman. "Should we accompany you back to the clubhouse as well?"
  16. Matthias nods in subconscious agreement with Darksten's frustration. Smiling at the dwarf warden, the gnome continues nodding, then turns to Soliman, Parvati, and Medusa. "We are agreed. Will you abide by this decision?"
  17. "While I agree with the sentiment, Master Cedric, I think the dockmaster and our captain here would both tell you - as they earlier told me - that the Town Watch only has power because they report to the Bonapartes, and the other Houses. Getting all six Houses to come to some agreement about his punishment would be a dogged, political affair without result. The Bonapartes happily have several representatives here already, so it seems expedient that they handle the situation. As I understand it, naval personnel are not known for leniency."
  18. Matthias picks up the mask, wondering if it still holds any magic. "Perhaps that is so in the Wastes, or the orc lands of Baltarok. Lady Medusa, this Orc committed his crimes here, in Eubric - and they are crimes only because the Bonapartes and the other Houses say it is so. It is better that he be tried - and punished - here, so that those Houses will be reminded of the laws they have made and continue their enforcement. Otherwise, his ilk will just be back here, chaining up Orcs to sell to unscrupulous buyers everywhere. I know it is of little satisfaction to you, but Captain Lane is correct, he must be held here." Turning to the unmasked slaver Orc but still addressing Medusa, Matthias adds, "Although if he somehow escapes justice here and flees back to the Orc lands, I'm sure his fate is in his own hands...." The gnome's voice leaves no doubt as to what he believes that fate would be. He turns to the other Bonaparte captain. "And what do you have to say for yourself? I suppose you will say that your customers pay heavily for their privacy... does your conscience pay heavily for their privacy as well?"
  19. Content to let his comrades smash the surviving slaver around for the moment, Matthias quickly heals Soliman, then rushes to the stabbed Bonaparte captain, signalling Captain Lane to follow. Examining the man's wounds, the druid does his best to save the man's life. As he works, he speaks to Lane in a low voice. "Captain Lane, I hope the Bonapartes will not take well to the use of their port as a shelter for kidnappers and slavers? Perhaps an increase of inspections on the dock is in order? Perhaps I'm speaking out of turn, given my relative anonymity in your organization, but I would hate to see Eubric and the High Kingdoms alike descend further into the mire." Another thought hits the gnome as he finishes patching up his patient, and he calls out to Barkley. "Sir Barkely, can you smell any other kidnapping victims - or slaves - on this ship? Perhaps there are more who would appreciate freedom."
  20. Who's Cutcobra?
  21. Matthias shakes his head in frustration. "Of course, because who doesn't love slavery, so long as they profit?" Battle Order > Lane: Bombard (Lightning Bomb) Medusa: Spear v. Captain > Darksten: Bow v. Wermhiem (don't attack Captain) > Matthias: Heal v. Soliman Barkley: Bite Wermhiem Throlar, Cedric, Parvati, Soliman, Johnny: Wait Strategy discussion: The captain's attack is still threatening, depending on how Lane fares with the bombard. Better to keep this under control rather than get everyone hurt. If the captain summons a mob, we'll have another enemy next round.
  22. Yup. At least Darksten isn't KO'd, though; isn't it nice to have a Druid around?
  23. Looks like a copypasta error, happening fairly often with this cursed new editor. Also, sheesh, there can't possibly be any more Damage/Special Damage rolls left in your dice, Zeph! Speaking of rolls, did you roll for Barkley? No roll is listed, but Wermhiem isn't *Bleeding -6* and doesn't appear to have taken damage from the doggo. Marveling at the deadly fireworks display spraying from Lane's hands, Matthias decides he's got to figure out how to do that. "Captain Lane, keep it up! The rest of us will just sit back and watch the show!" The gnome laughs, but the mirth is strained by his exhaustion. Turning to the slaver captain, he cruelly parrots the man's lilted speech. "Big captain bad man. Make gnome big mad. If Orcs going to be sold, who going to buy?" Matthias motions to the others to collapse in on the two remaining enemies. "Lady Parvati, would you mind blinding our drunken sailor friend?" Battle Order > Lane: Bombard (Fire Bomb) > Parvati: Scroll of Blinding v. Wermhiem > Darksten: Bow v. Wermhiem Medusa: Spear v. Wermhiem Throlar: Mopagsaber v. Captain > Soliman: Spear v. Wermhiem > Cedric: Tonic v. Matthias > Matthias: Heal v. first injured party member; if none, Extraordinaire v. Captain > Johnny: Twiddle thumbs Barkley: Bite Wermhiem Lane Damage Calculation Lane Firebomb Shield = ((20 + 10) + 40 + 10) x 3 = 240 damage per enemy Lane Firebomb Great Bombard = (20 + 10) x 2 + 40 + 10 = 110 damage per enemy Lane Firebomb Bombard = (20 + 10) + 40 + 10 = 80 damage per enemy
