  1. I can't buy the Disney sets in NZ, woe!
  2. Do you think dwarves would be a new model? Like a smaller sized mini-doll? Then they could pass (without the beards!) for kids right, in the mini doll world? Cause that would rule. Ever since my 5yo discovered my old Bellville (replete with mother, child and baby) she's been on at me to somehow magically 'build' kids and babies from the minidoll. They'd be huge, huge sellers.
  3. Really? Can anyone confirm this? How do you know? (I'm genuinely curious so I can find out for myself in future, also, kicking myself as I ran out and bought 3185) I'm in NZ, so it may be different here, but every NZ stockist I've spoken to has said a) they are sold out of 3315 and b) they don't know (and some think it's unlikely) they'll get any more. Woe!
  4. Nice! The Friends new little set 'Mia's Lemonade Stand' has a pink helmet, if you ever wanted a pink power ranger to complete the set. I totally dig this kind of build - the 'adult' MOC's on EB are beautiful, but I kinda think they can get away with quite a bit cause they'll never really be played with. Building in the City style is tougher, areas have to be playable and accessible and this just makes me wanna go 'pew pew pew' everywhere!
  5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Princess My bad - they'll be 12 and 13. Yeah Freddy Bricker, I'd like to know more about the design process too.
  6. If only children thought in such subtle ways! They don't. They really don't - as I have said, they are very literal. While I agree as an AFOL I can make these figs either male or female, kids won't - they are dressed for stereotypical male roles, they are not wearing or displaying any feminine signs, ergo, they are men. (Part of this is a much deeper discussion on the 'standard' or 'male' vs the 'other' or 'female' - as in 'Junior Builders Basic Box' vs 'Junior Builders Pink Basic Box', but we can come to that another day.) While I agree stereotyping occurs when gender is distinguished in a minifig (lipstick and beards etc) I don't see why that is a bad thing, and now that is has begun it's unavoidable. "but only a fraction" is the issue I have here. While kids have one or two 'female identified' figs, all these neutral guys will be, well, guys. If there was no distinct female, or male (as in, the old days) then yes! Any fig could be anyone, and joyous it was, but the added detail to faces, career specific roles, curved waists(!) and so on have pretty much prevented younger kids from exploring that option. Don't get me wrong! I love the details. But the devil is in them, so to speak, and now that minifig men have taken over the City, perhaps some gender balancing isn't such a terrible idea?
  7. Thanks guys, sorry it was 12.30am when I posted that and I was so tired my brain had given up. I'm trying to just use what I have, and stick to using parts from the Summer Riding Camp or small sets/polybags/common parts, which is a great challenge. (The idea is to show people what Friends sets can do!) In the end I dissasembled the door on the Camper 3184 and used those two white hinges: http://brickset.com/parts/?part=383101 (and it's counterpart). They also come in Mia's Lemonade stand and heaps of other sets, so I'm hoping other PFOL's can find them. The whiteness is a bit stark against the tan but it fades into the background a bit over time. I think. But thanks!
  8. Hey all, just a quick one. Which hinge system is best to use for a large building MOC? I'm turning the Summer Riding Camp into an apartment building/bookshop, and it's hinged in the middle to make a 'compact playset' type of thing. In total it's 32x24 deep, with a hinge joining the 16x16 plates (8x16 plates at the back) and like Friends and City, is open at the back. I'm struggling to find a hinge system that sits the sides reasonably flush when closed. It'll be two storey with a terrace garden type roof. I'd appreciate your thoughts!
  9. Does anyone have any tips on getting KFOLs to be more organised with their Lego, or simple storage options for them? We just bought a 27 litre clear bin for the bulk bits, which has an inset tray divided into 4 parts (vehicle parts, minidolls/figs, 'specialty' parts that can only be what they are, like windows etc and a misc which is all the little 1x1 round plates she loves so much and other tiny bits) but the tray has a gap under the handle so some bits fall through, and she often spills it lifting it out of the bin and back again. We saw the massive Friends Lego storage system ($100 NZD! But possibly worth it knowing how much storage costs here the above ^ was on special for $30) and were wondering - does anyone use it? Does anyone use any official Lego storage? (The heads are a bit of a joke.)
  10. I've been wondering that too. I buy Friends and City, and often find polybags or other interesting bits online that you can't buy here. But then again, NZ generally sucks in terms of Lego!
  11. The two new princesses will be 'crowned' this year yes, as the 13th and 14th respectively. (Guess who'll be 13!) I haven't seen these sets in NZ yet but can't wait to get my hands on them. I'm surprised Belle isn't in this first wave - she's the most critically acclaimed princess, and her dolls are the most popular (in australasia at least). Cinderella is the modern 'leader' of the princesses, but Ariel and Belle have always been her right-hand girlz. Plus, you know, I want a library! And a book in any other shade but pink!
  12. Sharing is hard! I'm working on this apartment MOC and sometimes I find horses or minidolls or coloured bricks in strange places and I think "WHY?!" but then, of course, it's because it's fun! I find it fascinating watching the different way we build and what we care or don't care about {minifigs and dolls crammed into a car (sometimes lying down) is fine; doorway openings that should be proper doors are fine (like toilet doors); walls that are incomplete are fine; but stairs have to go all the way up to the next floor...} and every day we play with Lego and it's different and wonderful. (We also play Minecraft, just cause.) However, in saying all this, my parents have yet to arrive back from their holidays and are yet to see the massive set I bought myself - perhaps they won't realise? It'll be an apartment building by then, fingers crossed! Also, there are not enough birthdays in a year!
  13. Maybe Uni-kitty is just um, Uni? Anyways - love it! Love it to bits. My daughter (5) actually built a pretty neat SNOT rainbow by using those sloped 'cheese' shape kinda bricks, ya know what I mean right? Yeah, those. She kinda backed them on to each other and built up and across to get the curve - just a half rainbow mind. I was pretty blown away by it. Will try and get a pick. You get a lot of those bits as spares in Friends too.
  14. Sorry I missed your comment! I think that's a really fun looking MOC, as to how to integrate the ice cream truck, I say look to the cone. The cone is where it's at. ;)
  15. Congratulations! This was my favourite MOC and it sure deserved a win - so much detail and such a highly playable scene. Have fun with those calendars!
  16. Hey Darkdragon, did you ever get around to more minidoll customisation? I totally dig this ^ - when I saw the saddle I was like 'Neat! A brick-built saddle! (almost!) I think it's totally usable. And the non-moving legs really bug me with the minidoll, it makes no sense to me (why can't their skirts have a little gap, would that be so bad?) I found this on the down under forum I'm on, but she doesn't say how she modded the minidoll or anything, which is a tad annoying - but it's still impressive! http://aussielegofans.forummotion.com/t1045-olivia-s-workshop
  17. Thanks for this awesome review Pandora (was this the one you said you were working on? Good effort!) did you have a play and try the combined build? We always buy all 3, every time, and they are great 'incentives' and 'rewards'! I love the look of the Tiger, and the slide appealed to my 5yo, but interestingly her fave animal is the turtle, cause "my boy turtle is lonely." Aww! It's true when you're a kid, one of anything isn't any use. We'll probably pick up some the Friends Jungle sets so the tiger can integrate into play better, and with the new City Arctic sets perhaps there's a future home for the penguin too! Do you think TLG plans that on purpose? A mini Friends/City cross over?
  18. What great prizes, for such a great contest! Awesome to see such quality MOCs. I wonder what set Gazumpty will pick?
  19. This is a really interesting thread! I have to say however, that I disagree with the last two statements. As a Early Childhood Educator (Kindy teacher, but one with a degree!) I've learned it is crucially important for kids to see themselves represented across a wide variety of mediums. Kids are really really literal. If they only ever see men in one role, they will simply believe only men can be that role. (Which is why Gail the construction worker is so great!) And while perpetuating a stereotype isn't the greatest thing in the world, and I see your point 62Bricks, this is exactly what the TLG have been doing by limiting such a wide variety of roles to just male figs. I should be clear - I'm talking about City here. Men can do everything in City, women have a few, specific roles, if any. And they always smile!
  20. C.S. Lewis for the win! I bought myself the 'Summer Riding Camp' (Friends) for my birthday, and got to build 99% of it by all myself, and was even allowed to not apply the stickers! I'm going to use it as a base for an apartment building, but for now we're having fun learning about 'horsies'. Yay Lego!
  21. I love how much you've packed in to such a small space - I agree with everyone else, I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
  22. Totes magotes. I'm a tad confused with their choices, but then I guess TLC did their research. If this replaces the big flagship Summer Riding Camp, which is essentially a very girl-centred set, I'm not surprised they opted for 'girly' choices. (And a sports shop, cause balance.) All the jungle sets seem to be diversifying from super-girly themes. What will replace 3315? Is it being discontinued? I know the Beach House is out, but I assumed from piece count and price that that is the replacement for the Vet. Also, any news on new adults?!
  23. OMG! Get the heck out! Oh gosh! Are there enough adult women to actually get married in Heartlake? Are there any unmarried men?! Maybe it's a ball dress shop! Yay school ball!
  24. Can I ask how old your daughter is, and how she found the build on the Beach House? My daughter is 5 1/2 and is just starting larger builds - the Vet is her biggest so far - so I'm keen to hear how other kids go!
