I think that this thing can have its positive implications. It happens (and not rarely) that I decided to buy a set I was not particularly interested in, only after I've seen in some review or looking at the real set, discovering some element or functionality I found interesting. The digital instructions could highlight this kind of things to promote a set. I don't think that digital instructions will replace the physical booklets, probably in the future sets we will have a QR code on the box (and why not... on a single special brick!) that will allow your smartphone or tablet to immediately load the digital instructions for that set. Very useful to test sets in a toy store and to build sets at home without look for physical instructions.

LDD crashes over 40-50 thousand bricks
Calabar replied to milovan's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Four hours is not a long time for a render. Many builders here take up to "days" for a good render. If you want to save time obtaining a good result, you can use the bbqqq techinque of separate renderings. Take a look at here. -
It is not important what you can do, but the resources you need to do it. HTML5 + JS webapp solution is not much efficient. Surely not efficient as native code. Maybe in TLG already examined possibilities and decided that a Web App would not be adequate for this reason. Or maybe not. What I want to say is that you can't choose the platform without take account of performances, especially for this kind of devices.
-
I'm not so sure that a webapp would be a good idea. In this kind of applications, performances are critical. In this kind of devices, the use of resources is critical (a battery-draining application would be not a good result). HTML5 is often good, but in this cases native code could be the only available choice. Anyway I Agree, so few supported devices is a senseless choice. I hope that this is only an experiment, and the compatibility would be extended to all suitable devices (iOS, Android, WP/WinRT at least) soon.
-
I think that an official application where to find LEGO BI is a great idea, very comfortable when someone need to build his/her sets without search among papery booklets or search and download pdf or images. The bad thing is that is seems you can install the application only on certified devices. That's absolutely a senseless choice, because it drastically limits the number possible users. I was going to install it, but I discovered that my devices are not suitable for it.

Alignment of Technic pieces in MLCad

It seems that LD4DModeler is an old and outdated software, discontinued and deprecated by the author. It has been replaced by LD4DStudio. -
LDD hardware support
Calabar replied to Bojan Pavsic's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
About the configuration, another cheap solution could be to wait for the new AMD APU in January. Kaveri APU has steamroller cores and GNC GPU with HSA, Mantle and True Audio support. A good step ahead compared to the present APUs. For LDD it is surely enough, the first configuration is really oversized for the use you have described above. If your fear is to buy a PC that will not be longeval, you are true, this machine will be surely less longeval than the the previous one. But the cost is 1/3. That mean that you can use the extra budget to update the machine in a few years, saving some money and having a most up to date machine over years. @legolijntje 840 EVO is surely better than original 840, but at the same price you can buy an SSD with less cheap MLC. Even with its caches, the 840 EVO don't "shine" in some situations, and the TLC are a "new entry", no one really knows about their real endurance and problems. And I don't like to be a beta tester for Samsung! Given that any SSD, even cheaper ones, is a good choice for a modern machine, in the case of a over 1,5k dollars computer I think that the 840 pro is a better choice. I suggest the 840 evo, Crucial M4, Plextor M5S, etc... for a cheaper machine. -

Calabar replied to Bojan Pavsic's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The 840 is a good price/performance SSD, but it has its flaws and it uses TLC memories. As we are speaking about a 120/128 GB size, the 840 Pro (or another similar product) offers a better solution with a limited additional cost. About the RAM, frequencies and timings importance is getting smaller, except than in specific situations (for example with many AMD APU, where the memory controller need to supply the GPU, that is hungry of bandwidth). I think that the 1600Mhz ram he choose are good for his system, and it seems you agreed with me. Another thing. The Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP LGA uses a Z87 chipset, that will be not compatible with the next die shrink of this generation of Intel processors. We are very close to the release of a refresh version of haswell processors together with the series 9 chipsets. Maybe might be worth to wait for this update. -

@johnboy You are about to spend over 1,5k AUD for a PC, why economize buying a middle-range SSD and only 8GB of RAM? About the storage, maybe a Caviar Red or a Segate Video could be a better solution (slower, but certified for 24/7, silent and low power consumption). As legolijntje says, it is a good game machine, oversized for the use with LDD. -
@wipeoutzone Try removing the old (not cropped) image and then upload the new (cropped) one. Otherwise, try changing the filename before uploading. PS: the set is medium-size. When you will replace the image, remember to use an adequate size for it. A 320-384 pixel should be a good width for it. The "trick" is to crop and then resize the image, not vice-versa.

LDD Official Sets UPGRADE Report
Calabar replied to Calabar's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Index updated with informations reported until here. -
@kcoon Ok I'll remove the incomplete tag from all your entries. But... please remove the set you added and post it in a new post. @Vee These are errors. I've to update my sets and I think I'll fix them when I'll do that. About the engraved tiles, maybe I used the first suitable tiles I found! Tiles with groove has a little step on the bottom part.

I mean to communicate me NOW the list of the topic that you will update adding the minifigures, so I can index that as complete even before you update your post. For the new entry, remember to share it in a new post, not editing the old one.

@kcoon Thanks for the help. If the rule about cropping is not clear I can rewrite it. I'm not native English and not ever I realize of this kind of things. About the sets where you added minifigures, provide me an exaustive list (editing the post above). Today I will update the index in the post 3501, so I can index your sets as complete.

Not sure about what you mean. You have to crop the image removing all blank stripes (both horizontal and vertical) around the subjects. Anyway maybe you can find the answer in the guide I linked you some posts ago (this one). PS: you should crop the image before resizing it, or the final result could be too small.

@wipeoutzone Supposedly you used PowRay, and you are true, it is not a CAD software, it is used to render files created with CAD other software. I thought the rule was comprehensible (at start, the rule says that the image have to be a simple screenshot), but I will remove the word CAD to avoid further misunderstanding. Thanks for reading the guidelines. I've seen you already replaced the image, but it was not cropped. In the meantime I converted it again in a text link. PS: I'm going to update the index, if you are enough fast to fix your entry, it will be indexed.

@wipeoutzone The set is almost regular now, you should only replace the image. The answer is very simple: it violates the third rule about images in this topic (not read yet? ). You can provide the rendering as an extra using a text link. PS: note that the image as is now is not well cropped. I opened the file and it results made with LDD 4.3.6. The last version is 4.3.8. I told "maybe", because when I edited your post I removed some entries under "Errors", because these entries was meaningless. I thought you could have tried to add some other error without success. If the list is exhaustive with a single entry, there is nothing to change. PS: it should be better to identify the missing part with the Design ID instead than the Element ID, because the Design ID is easier to find in the parts database over Internet. In this case the part should be this one, whose Design ID is 89162 and colour Tr. Yellow.

It seems you don't want to read the rules in the first page of this topic. Please, do it, a little effort is required for all contributors. I'm available to help, but I need a bit of collaboration. The first way to see what's wrong in your post is to see other entries and look for the differences! In brief: Set's data are not clear and has not been highlighted. Theme has not been specified. The image is not a screenshot of your creation but a rendered image of the set taken somewhere. The image is oversized (I suggest no more than 320x pixel for this set). The image is not cropped (You should remove blank borders from the image) It seems you did confusion when you build the error list. I edited it, but maybe the list have to be completed. Your set has not been build with the last version of LDD, then you have to report the version you have used. I added this information when I edited your post. NOTE: for a good quality screenshots you can follow this guide.

Hi wipeoutzone, welcome in the LDD Official Set topic. It seems it is a period rich of new entries! About your question, you have to use an external file hosting. The most used here is brickshelf, that allows to host both LEGO related images and cad files and to hotlink them. Don't forget to read the rules in the first page before adding a new entry here!

@kcoon Welcome in the LDD Official Sets topic. You did an huge work with these Star Wars sets. Very impressive, as introduction! Your post need only few fixes: - Images are not cropped, you should remove both vertical and horizontal blank stripes. - As the sets are so big, I think they deserve the maximum allowed size: 512x pixel. - You should add the theme to the set's data.

Brickset gather parts informations directly from TLG database, so it should be reliable. Thanks for fixing quickly your entry. As Brickset reports a set's number, I'll edit it again to add that this info. What abut official building instructions?

Odd error, any ideas on how to fix?
Calabar replied to Xan326's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
You can find the folder containing the shortcuts related to the tiles in the Start Screen in For all users %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ For your user %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
