Transitioning to Stud.io
Shroud replied to Shroud's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I’m probably doing something wrong but I can’t seem to get the minifig legs to hinge at the hip. Think I’m missing something and just imported the legs in from LDD in the meantime. That was ok for a work around. -
Transitioning to Stud.io

Does it not work on other graphics cards? -
Hi all, I thought I would share my experience using Stud.io during the AFOL designer program. I’ve been a huge follower of LDD for many years, through its start and the days of opening up all its bricks to its current form. I’ve had POV ray setup rendering highly detailed Mocs and blueprint to make the instructions (great program). Unlike stud.io V1.0, the new version is smoother with less bugs and after a few hours of use I’m finding it easier to build with. Once you know what headers the parts are under it’s very easy to find what you’re looking for. The manipulation of the MoC is smoother including the placement of parts. The inbuilt rendering can be changed from its native one to POV ray at a click. The native rendering however uses your graphics card...finally and doesn’t have issues with transparent parts. The renders are so so so much faster and looks amazing, I run just a GeForce 780ti. The instruction section is of a high quality with the ability to rotate the view freely and choose background colours. It also exports to PDF now and lets you add pages from external sources. You can now add your amazing cover page/render. Then uploading the MoC to your “my studio” is easy and create a wanted list of the parts. There’s also a buy all option. You can even import your lxfs. So in short Stud.io combines LDD, POV ray, blueprint and BrickLink in a higher quality whilst using your graphics card with faster render times. It looks a lot more professional and I’m looking forward to it’s future. It’s taken me a while to come around to it but I’m sold, it’s almost like it’s developers have been listening to us! If you haven’t tried it yet I would seriously recommend it. Any of your own thoughts and experiences are of course welcome. Shroud

Help to build a norwegian tram
Shroud replied to bilet's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I would suggest try the build in stud.io 2.0 as you can select just the colours available and upload to your baseplate in Bricklink from the program. From there create a wanted list and click buy all. You could make it in LDD first and import it though as that works well too. -
AFOL designer program

Yea there is still some bugs with importing I found the same and any 1x1 tile in general. I’ve reported the bugs on their bug forum. -
So far it’s very impressive but still lacks the workflow and smoothness of LDD in terms of building. Making instructions in blueprint is easier so far but the quality and customisation of stud.io is better. The images are a higher res, you can alter the view of the model in 3D and I think it even saves the layout of the final product. You have to keep regenerating the layout in blueprint.

Studio 2.0 "Photorealistic" Renders

It’s awesome that this is inbuilt, POV ray wasn’t the easiest to setup up for a lot of ppl -
MLCad - How to get better renders?
Shroud replied to Frostbricks's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I still prefer LDD for building then importing into stud.io for the final touches...it renders in pov ray as well and uploads to your baseplate so you can buy the bricks. I'm playing with its instruction builder atm and its very high quality. -
Trouble with Building Instructions
Shroud replied to keiththelegokid's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Blueprint is by far the best instruction maker I've used so far but you do need to use it with LDD. There is no option to export directly to LDD from stud.io as you know but you can export to Ldraw like you tried and use programs like Lpub 3d for instructions. If you can export to Ldraw from stud.io without missing parts this would be the way to import to LDD: https://wiki.ldraw.org/wiki/LDraw_to_LDD_conversion Also the updated Ldraw conversion file can be found in this forum above: EDIT> Ok the new Stud.io beta 2.0 has a new instruction builder app inbuilt that looks similar to blueprint and you can export to PNG or PDF if you want to..Im gonna be trying this! -
AFOL designer program

Would be amazing if it was a way ppl could buy your instructions and the bricks to go with it in one click. Kind of like the LEGO store available only online. A shared design by me type of idea. Maybe an option to choose pick a bricks along side Bricklink stores -
Hi all, Shameless post here looking for feedback from my redesigned Eris fighter. I can’t post the image here for some reason but this is the link: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/c19983a7-da53-442f-886d-44be3bedeeff Regards Shroud

Stud.io was actually pretty good I just tried it, the fact it rendered in POV Ray with a click of the button was awesome. I've only imported lxf's atm and the Bricklink buy all option was actually decent. I'll try and build with it soon. What Pro's do you speak of that use LDD?

I've always said a paid version of LDD would be amazing, and please please please use the GPU!

LDD, POV ray and a Moc revamp
Shroud posted a topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Hey guys, It's been a while since I've posted and as I'm now more active and back into LDD I thought to revamp some older Mocs and enter them into Lego ideas. The first is the rocket surfer, it was chosen from a competition run here and has undergone a redesign. You can vote for it here if you like: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/a9fd199f-7306-42f2-b887-07730601528a Unfortunatly it wont let me upload the image even though its within the guide lines? Many days went into the rendering, any comments or ideas are appreciated even post your own :) -
End of support for LDD
Shroud replied to Lasse D's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
TLG nerfed themselves right from the start. "Design by me" was aimed at children and only worked on a limited selection of bricks. The biggest piece of the pie are people like you and me contributing to this forum. Look at the gaming industry, the average gamer is 35 and they are people who work who can afford expensive pre orders and shiny goodness. You give LDD this ability to people who will actually use it (AFOL), taking advantage of all the extended mode has to offer and to people who can afford it and see where this leads. Lego is not about $$ to me but TLG is a business and DBM is a way to measure. Wouldn't be hard to link it to pick a brick etc. -
End of support for LDD
Shroud replied to Lasse D's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Well if they put more into LDD it would be one application I would happily pay money for even (and I don't normally say this about an application) pay an annual subscription for. It's such a great tool and That Lego Chap was right, I've purchased bricks to build mocs I've made in LDD there just isn't a way for TLG to measure this. Using GPU, inbuilt rendering PoV Ray quality, all those options people have wanted all rolled into one program in the age of technology we live in is a revenue right there. -

Converting LDD to DXF
Shroud replied to BrickCurve's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The only way I've found is to export it into an LDraw prog like MLCAD and convert it from there from the various conversion programs online. I used to get it into Lightwave and 3dsMax. You will find the "how to" in the pinned threads at the top. The XML file for converting can be found here Its not perfect though so you will need to rotate some parts after the conversion. -

I must admit I'm kind of drooling...to be able to get my capital space ship imported? I'll have to try it hopefully I cant go inside etc Wouldnt let me place it but the bridge of my Capital ship is bigger than the island... https://www.flickr.com/photos/shr0ud/19640533728/in/dateposted-public/ -
LDD 2 Blender (MAC)
Shroud replied to OLDNUT's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I used to do this exporting into Lightwave (Ldd>ldr>lwo). Unfortunatly even Ghalaghers xml used to get LDD mocs to Ldraw wasnt complete. Did the same for 3dsmax thats how my mate got it into the unity engine. http://gallaghersart.com/page/new_ldd_parts_and_the_ldraw.xml <<Thats the file, never got finished by them :/
