Working Orrery

Hey everyone! Welcome to my latest LEGO Ideas project - a kinetic sculpture of an Orrery where the earth goes round the sun and the moon round the earth. Go support it here: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/bc099c6a-9cf0-427b-a35e-3aff4599b150 Build This build consists of the Sun, the Earth and the Moon, built on a vintage/antique style base. The Moon revolves around the Earth while the earth revolves around the Sun. The mechanics are hidden nicely inside the base. I have put a lot of effort into making the model as sturdy as I can, and the motion as smooth as possible. The model was built to look as nice as possible, with a detailed, brick-built version of the Earth. Dimensions of the build: 35x18.5x28 (LxBxHcm) Pieces This model has 1200 LEGO Bricks (give or take a few). I built the model digitally to check! Aim My aim with this model was not to make a 100% accurate scientific model of an orrery, but rather to make something that looked great on display, while still being functional. I also wanted to make the design as compact so as to keep it affordable. Another important aspect of this project was the varied build experience - a combination of Technic and System bricks to create an interesting and fun build. This model would also have a very wide appeal - from space and astronomy fans to technic fans, as well as people who like collecting models for display. Hope you like this project! Ryu Wakimoto made wonderfull Orrery with Earth tilt, see: https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-9044/sidebook/planet-orrery/#bi I have modified it slightly: removed cover of the stand to show internal gears, added shining Sun and other small changes. And I have made instructions with some details about function and real motion of planet and moon. Orrery was already tested in astronomical learning group for kids at observatory in my city. Kids enjoyed it a lot. A shining Sun is a huge source of learning and fun. Maybe a lot of you have seen orrery by JKBrickworks. This one has a huge improvement: Earth rotation axis is tilted. Therefore following features can be shown using this orrery: Orrery simulates: 1, Sun rotation, 2, Earth orbit, 3, Earth rotation, 4, tilt of Earth axis 5, Moon orbit, 6, Moon rotation. A rotating Sun can be used to show rotation of Sun. A shining Sun can be used to show phases of moon, illumination of Earth during seasons, polar day/night, lunar or solar eclipse. Either motor or hand can be used to rotate orrery. Model deficiencies: Moon eclipse comes every single orbit of moon due to limited size of the model. New moon always cause solar eclipse due to limited size of the model. Sun rotation is independent on latitude. Hello everyone! Here is my latest creation, an orrery displaying the three inner planets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pv04_gqBOk I rounded off the real orbit period numbers so that they would be easier to recreate using lego gears. The real orbit period for Mercury compared to Earth´s orbit period(1 year) is 0.241 and I rounded it to 0.25. Venus´ real orbit period is 0.615 and I used 0.6. To figure out what gears I should use I divided 1 with 0.25 for Mercury and 0.6 for Venus(1/0.25 and 1/0.6). This got me the numbers 4 for Mercury and 1.66.. for Venus(1 year on earth is approximately 4 Mercury-years and it is also approximately 1.66.. Venus-years) The moon should complete 12 revolutions per orbit (12 months a year) but i just had the very small space on the ´´arm´´ that holds Earth to place gears on so the closest I could get was to have it completing 11.66.. revolutions/months per year/orbit.
