OK, very late to this post ... But after searching for such spirals with original LEGO monorail curves (and not finding, not even here on EB but long forced delays between searches doesn't help - Until after posting my own YouTube video someone kindly pointed me to this post ). I finally figured out the ratio and mounting (based on other brick built track designs and some trial/error) to design and build my own. I used the Fibonacci ratio of 2,3,5,8 bricks per quadrant for the initial rise, then basically built up each stanchion identically from there until I ran out of curves in my collection.

Ah... I see now why I can't seem to remove an "attachment"... it is the photo that is linked to your reply of my initial post, before I figured out how to properly post images :)

Thanks... BTW, I figured out how to share proper sized images and updated my post... Now I just have to figure out how to delete a file from my attachments :)

"Sorry for bumping this thread - I just stumbled about it: @0815Tanaka: Wow, that is a nice build, and great idea for placing the motor! I too wanted a nice steam locomotive with the black and red colour scheme, but A) too costly and B) too big for my layout. So over time I designed and modified to taste this one. And modified a couple of 2x2 light bricks with LEDs, for both the headlamp (warm white) and firebox (red). I originally used a black 12v motor and wheels, but then I broke down and picked up a RED 12v one and redid the wheel base on the tender to match).

12V motor running the opposite direction to other engines
GunnersGarrison replied to Ncore's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Hello. After just re-greasing my first red 12 motor, I can confirm that the position of the motor casing/stator (as in which side is UP along the rotational axis of the commutator) will affect the "normal" direction of the motor :P Had me totally baffled at first... then a quick Google led me here. And now that I know it, it makes perfect sense as it changes the orientation of the permanent magnets. -
