[ENTRY] Rock Island Refuge (Now Finished)
MstrOfPppts replied to CaptainDarkNStormy's topic in Pirate MOCs
Sure but if we presume that all DBG is rock than it seems like towards the top the rock has grown into the abandoned LBG fort build instead of plants. Or it's hard to imagine that the rocky pillar would stand so high on its own while they would build the fort around it. Anyway, just my cup of tee, miss some black in it and that's it. Still - rock island means that the island is made of rock, not the fort that stands on it ... (: -
A very nice concept! I really like the positioning and the shape of the build and the idea is quite original. Also the interior is nicely built and the trap door bed is a new for me. (: On the other side I think it does need a bit more detail, the rockwork is too repetitive using the BURPs and LURPs and the palm tree is really positioned out of place. Also it doesn't benefit much from the baseplate decoration since it almost covers it completely. And weren't decent renders a requirement for digital entries? Not familiar with the software you used, but my eyes hurt a bit from looking at the images ...

[ENTRY] Caribbean River Soldiers (Mini Set)
MstrOfPppts replied to Rogue Redcoat's topic in Pirate MOCs
Also forgot to mention that finally someone uses the green bar thingy to attach the leaves rather than the ugly tan one! -
This is one of the sets I would never think of when it comes to discussing classic pirates! On flickr you can see that the boulder is in deed there, though a bit smaller. There are quite some nice play features also but I don't think that the dark tan was the best color choice for the rockwork. I would have preferred gray with green on top. I really like the build for the bridge, though I would increase the spacing between the rocks and the ship so that the whole bridge would hang rather than two planks just lying on the pier. The palm tree is nice though a bit parts intensive for a LEGO set, but the tree looks out of place for not looking too tropical yet on the other side very LEGO like. (: Another thing that needs an upgrade are the minifigs. With some figures in the image it's not clear weather a fig is an armada guy, a pirate, armada pirate or a knight pirate. ;) I also really like the take on the custom base for the cannon but it does look a bit flimsy.

[ENTRY] Caribbean River Soldiers (Mini Set)
MstrOfPppts replied to Rogue Redcoat's topic in Pirate MOCs
Nice changes, definitely an improvement from the previous entry! I'm not too sure about the tan grilled 2 plates brick under the palm tree though. Yet still this is one of the few if not the only mini build containing 3 minifigures. As such I'd say that the focus was on the minifigures and would still expect a unique torso design since it's quite easy to make it look good building digitally. -
A stunning entry! Just like an UCS islanders set if LEGO did UCS sets back then. A lot of details where 3 images can't do the build justice. Would like to see some enlarged images of the play features. I will not go into detail what all is awesome about this build which is the vast majority of it. Would like to point out the diagonal bridge which came out nicely and gives that extra connection between the areas to make it seem more as a whole. You followed the classic color scheme almost perfectly and the use of decorated baseplates is also very smart! My only nitpicky complaints would be a few parts that do not match the classic standards. I think that there is still a 2 years gap between the Islanders and the Indians, where the tent supports used under the diagonal bridge are from. Maybe I'd change that into a rocky pillar and a black support using 2x2 round bricks decorated with some red. Another part that stands out is the pirate raft. I can't tell if it's black or dark brown? Dark brown is too modern of a color anyway. And although I know that technically the black barrels existed in one set in 1990, they were never used in pirates nor western theme later on. Therefore not even black works for the barrels on the raft since the rest of the build follows the classic color scheme so well. Another thing that looks a bit out of place are the yellow shores. Maybe if plates were used instead of bricks it'd look better, yet I think that the ones in back corners are completely redundant! Anyway, mixing the decorated baseplates shores with brick / plate built shores does not work the best in my eyes. All in all a very strong entry! I would even consider buying this set back in the days, before I decided to abandon all my yellow minifigures ... (:

Yap, saving parts is all that this build is about. I tried using as much of the original idea as possible thus the gray concrete base for the fort. It's quite challenging to make this relatively big build with so few parts. Therefore the bigger the part the better. Besides I prefer the masonry brick to the new plates style. I'm not used to copying the style of the TLG just to make it look more set like. Same goes for the steep sloped shores ... if there's a better way to do it, then change it. But it's my preference anyway.

[ENTRY] Rock Island Refuge (Now Finished)
MstrOfPppts replied to CaptainDarkNStormy's topic in Pirate MOCs
Love the overall shape, all the hidden details and play features like the hidden chest, the opening in the rocks and so on. Though adding DBG into upper build doesn't help, it's even harder to distinguish rocks from what used to be the fort ... -
Took some time and this is what I could come up with. Easier built then described in detail. With 32 parts this achieves the right height for the arched hole, full fence on top of the tower and integrated ladder holder, but skips the pier, the water and some stairs. The plates for the base exist as one part and also a 1x1 plate and 1x1 plate with clip could be replaced by the 1x2 plate with clip. None of these two parts exist in LDD. This gives you a full 20 parts to distribute among the figures, accessories or some more building, maybe some vegetation ...

The newer version comes in quite some colors among which white is also an option! But anyway building digitally still gives you an option to introduce existing pieces in new colors. I don't think it is encouraged, but it's not against the rules. I even remember someone asking about it and was approved ...

Fabulous minifigures, great to see that some time went into making a nice figbarf instead of just reusing some already seen combinations. The islander chief misses something on top of his helmet though.

[ENTRY] - King Kahuka's Outrigger Boat (Mini Set)
MstrOfPppts replied to kritch's topic in Pirate MOCs
What a great set! I am usually not a big fan of brick built things where a similar mold already exists. They usually look too bulky or too square. Somehow this boat is designed really well and it doesn't bother me that it's made of bricks. The design is slick and looks appropriate in size. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the front with the cheese slopes not matching the curve underneath and sticking out rather then being smaller - more pointy. Also in my opinion one of the stronger entries and the turtle is a really nice touch for a change of usual sea life inclusion! -

Another remake of this awesome set! I like the brown pier, it also works better in my eyes. All your mentioned changes make sense, though I do miss some black in the building. It's just too gray. Besides Lego never cared for the wet effect, even if you look at Ray the castaway or the PoBB set there is no dark tan to tan transition by the water. Taking this in consideration I think you'd be just fine if all the rockwork was DBG in contrast to the LBG fort. Now it's kind of too molded together and hard to see where the rocks stop and the building continues. Still I'd go with a lot more black in the building. Also the ladder should then be changed to the dark tan one or the older brown one ... Love the work so far and fingers crossed you'll manage it till the deadline! -

[ENTRY] 1795 Imperial Cannon Remake (Mini Set)
MstrOfPppts replied to CaptainDarkNStormy's topic in Pirate MOCs
Was just about to write how this set is a good example that shows that not all modern sets need rounded plates for bases nor the newer azure color since blue works just fine! But then I scroll down and I see the update. Not better nor worse in my eyes, I just think it's an unnecessary update. Even the crab was better in yellow to bring in some contrast to red epaulets ... Anyway, as I've suggest before to others, whichever version you decide to be your final, include it in the first post. Since that is the only image the majority of voters will have a look at! Otherwise one of the stronger entries and a very nice remake.- 16 replies

[CONTEST] Return of the Classic Pirates - Vote Counting
MstrOfPppts replied to Mister Phes's topic in LEGO Pirates
I call for a mutiny! Taking the amount of entries in consideration as well as their general high quality I think that the entrants did a very good job. And the least we can do to show them some credit is being able to vote for 5 entries per category! As for the voting for yourself - I know it's a bit of a pirate tradition around here, but I don't see any point in it. Makes for a bit of a disadvantage for the people with common sense! (: Any details on how long the voting phase will last? -
[ENTRY] Renegade's End (Mini Set) - Sequel to 6234 Renegade's Raft
MstrOfPppts replied to Johnnyopies's topic in Pirate MOCs
I always thought that those yellow things were inflatable arm rings tied together - makes the most sense. As for the entry, I guess if such a set was ever made, it would receive similar feedback as the Star Wars 75334 ... -
[ENTRY] La Serpiente - remake of 6280 Armada Flagship NOW UPDATED!
MstrOfPppts replied to Dreamweb's topic in Pirate MOCs
I think it's much better now. Who would of thought that losing just one color would make such a difference! It might be too white in some places now, though that could be fixed with replacing red with green instead of white. It'd also be nice to match the side windows with the rear one - green frame with black inside. Or at least use a different color for window panes. But I do understand it's a bit too much to expect you to have all the right parts in the right colors when building physically. The gundeck is spacious as well as the cabin which is also nicely furnished and detailed. I really like how you used technic bushes for the smaller wheels on cannons! Only other complaint I might have is that the compass is positioned a bit too low? No idea how realistic that is but LEGO ships used to have them right on top of the wheel, which I got used to ... [ENTRY] La Serpiente - remake of 6280 Armada Flagship NOW UPDATED!
MstrOfPppts replied to Dreamweb's topic in Pirate MOCs
I am aware of the sails being vintage LEGO sails. What I was trying to say, is that you are using two of these instead of two of these which would better match the main sail in the stripes pattern. -
[ENTRY] La Serpiente - remake of 6280 Armada Flagship NOW UPDATED!
MstrOfPppts replied to Dreamweb's topic in Pirate MOCs
The sails are from a different set and the thickness of the stripes do not match. Making the overall appearance look even more messy ... -
Another nice concept design for the mini category. I agree with the praise of army building potential of this set. It has just what it needs. Nice touch with the 2x8 bricks to gain some parts efficient height. Simple yet effective they say. In this case a bit too simple in my eyes. The main concern being that the pier and the stairs take up some much needed parts to properly finish the fence at the top which is too small. Also the clips and the ladder holder should be better integrated into the build rather than just being put on the top. If you skip the pier and use just a 2x4 tile for the one step I think the fence could be much better. Also the torch could be replaced by a flag to save some more parts. The LDD part count is correct so you're good.
