[moc] Great Northern K-1S 4-4-2 WITH CABOOSE
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Looks great! Love the slanted piston detail. Great Job capturing it here. -
So much this. @SteamSewnEmpire when was the last time you designed a model that ran on track in the brick? I can "design" a model in a day, will it run on track and hold together when handling? Probably not. @Jeffinslaw is correct there are hundreds of hours into instructions alone, then you add order and dealing with BrickLink sellers, counting parts, sorting parts, etc it adds up FAST. Just look at other custom kits available from places like BrickMania and Armor Brick or heck even Brick Model Railroader. Those prices range from $0.50 to upwards of $1.00 per part and they sell reasonably well. @Daedalus304 put it into perfect words. This is a custom, short run, piece of art. The price comparison to LEGO is not even close they wont produce a set unless they think they can sell tens if not hundreds of thousands of them. (yes I know there are exclusives for events but thats not the point here) They can take the couple hundred man hours of design, testing, instructions, redesign and spread that cost out over a LOT of sets. @coaster is not making hundreds let alone thousands of these kits so he needs to recover the cost of his time for these. Yes its expensive but the idea that it could be designed "overnight" is a total fantasy.

What size are the standard Lego steam drivers in minifig scale?
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
There is honestly enough flex in the trailing or leading trucks normally that you will not need to worry about the half plate difference. If it is affecting the design, you would either need to mount the pilot and trailing trucks differently or use a size that is smaller but a whole integer number of plates from the driver size. like MS instead of S for the pilot wheels. Also the plate sizes mentioned above are the diameter. The center of the wheel is 1/2 plate different from its neighbor. If you have to have whole plate mounting height differences for your design, then you will need to use sizes that are multiples of 2 away. I hope that makes sense. -
What size are the standard Lego steam drivers in minifig scale?
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Here is a size chart I put together: Most North American modelers seem to use 8 studs 10 feet which converts to 1 plate is 6" you can then do a little math and get the size. For reference, LEGO makes the S and L sizes. Big Ben Brick makes S, M, L, XL, and XXL. The other sizes in between were conceptualized and developed by @Shupp The XLL size was suggested by Matt Csenge and Developed by Scott Hoffmeyer. -

[moc] CP H1e 4-6-4 Royal Hudson
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I think I liked your previous version better. CP Royal Hudson 3 by Shrike Arghast, on Flickr -
Just going on the width (8 studs here) you are like 5-6 plates too tall
-
Looks pretty good! What scale are you working in? it looks quite tall.

Are smaller flanges possible on larger radius tracks?
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I can understand what you are saying but I am asking where the line is drawn? The wheels from BBB were brought into the LEGO system (at least the L sized driver) for the emerald night. The track options that are available match the look and feel of LEGO track but replacing all that will a more "scale" option would start to go out side of LEGO to me. I wasnt attacking here just asking, how far is too far? What is stopping us from just going to this? https://www.maerklin.de/en/products/details/article/44734/ -

supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
This sounds cool, but at what point is it not LEGO? I would love smaller flanges but there a particular appeal to running on LEGO track that keeps it in the hobby for me. This proposed solution is more along the lines of scale model railroading which isnt bad just not really in the realm of LEGO, you know? -

[RANT] Stud.io
supertruper1988 replied to ExeSandbox's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
I never said I dont use studio. I have been slowly transitioning to LDCad. It has some quirks but as a lifetime CAD user its pretty simple once you get the hang of it. MecaBricks has come a long way from its inception and I highly recommend watching the tutorial videos. -
[RANT] Stud.io
supertruper1988 replied to ExeSandbox's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Having read this and looking at everyone's complaints I would like to throw in my rant. I doubt the studio developers build LEGO at all. I also doubt they have ever designed a function program. things like file handling, UI scaling, basic navigation in menus do not work. Some examples: You cannot tab between fields in most places Fields are not adhered to a character type, for instance, I can type a rotation value in the page editor but if I hit "D" on the keyboard to go to the next page, it places a D in the rotation field, causing an error Part files, are not able to be imported directly into studio. Locked ZIP as file type? that is incredibly dumb and a major security flaw. This is just a short list, never mind, relying on the user base to be the QA/QC team. -
Is there a way to export LDD files into Stud.io with the groups intact?
supertruper1988 replied to Corellian Corvette's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
The group function in LDD is unique the studio sub models way of doing things is the "better" but not the same. Its a carry over from the LDraw format. -
A quick google search should yield some results. I would try "custom LEGO train instructions"
-
If I recall correctly this is from @charlesp1138

Does anyone use decals instead of stickers?
supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
It depends on who you ask but in my mind a "decal" is specifically when it is printed on something other than paper with a sticky backing. -

supertruper1988 replied to Equilibrium's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
You will want to use @SylvainLS 's tool to conver to ldraw first. then import to studio. ) -

supertruper1988 replied to SteamSewnEmpire's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I use only printed vinyl decals from @legoman666 aka Okbrickworks much easier than water slide and no risk of them flaking off.
