Heroica RPG - Quest#148: Once Upon a Time in Goetia

"Got any Everlastin' Venom (Causes a weapon to deal the poisoned by 10 effect), or any kinda Sharpened Fangs? (Causes a weapon to deal the bleeding by 3 effect) Doubt you keep any Level-Up Mushrooms in here. Demon Repellent could also help us out here."

"And I s'pose I might not be shufflin' these cards around again, so...may as well trade in this Archangel (Luminous 10) Decamon card. Better not be a trash prize, mate."

Sham Poo spread his arms apologetically.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"I'm sorry... Oh, I do have one Demon Repellent right here that I could part with for 100 gold. Now, let's see about that card of yours..."

Sham took the card and his lizard's eyes widened.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"This is a one-of-a-kind card! If you're sure you want to part with this, I can turn it into something real good. Let's see if I remember how to do it correctly..."

Sham touched the archangel card and muttered some words, and with a flash of light, it transformed into a brilliant stone.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"Here you go: you now have a summonstone at your disposal! With it, you can call upon an actual archangel to fight by your side! Isn't that cool?"
heroicarules-summonarchangel.jpg

"What about some Raw Meat, a Grating Stone, a Spyglass, Hydra Skin, or some Prayer Beads?"

Sham kept shaking his head sheepishly.

"100 gold for an ether core sounds outrageous, Elphaba used to sell them for 60, so how about 250 for all four, that's more than Elphaba charged."

"Oh, and since this is Elphaba's old wagon that means it's a magic shop, doubt even you could take the magic out of this place, so here's some bones I wish to sell."

Sham looked miffed about Namyrra's bossy attitude.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"I'm not Elphaba, and this is not a magic shop. This is a wonder wagon, like I told you! But very well, I'll take your 250 gold for the four ether cores.I don't have any use for bones, though. I don't even have a dog."

"Althior, do you mind handing me 50 of my gold for the Quarterstaff?
"Do you have any Strong Wasabi (-2 Poisoned when applied to a weapon, permanently) (Quest #127)? What about gems? I guess you don't have any scrolls?"

Sham handed over the quarterstaff to Pretzel as Althior tossed him the gold.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"Ugh, I hate spicy food! Sorry, no scrolls either, but I do have this odd diamond here. I guess Elphaba left it behind by accident. I shouldn't probably sell it to you, then, but 150 gold should be a good compensation for the moral dilemma I have to suffer."

The wagon rolled forward on the road to Goetia, until suddenly someone ordered them to stop. Peeking outside, the party saw a patrol of soldiers blocking the road.

heroicaquest148-marshalbarret.jpg
"Halt! The road is closed in the name of King Jovis!" shouted the leader, brandishing a fancy rapier. "No one is allowed to enter Goetia until the strange storm ends. King's orders!"

"That is quite the prize, Atramor. I am sure it will aid us well in the coming battles. And good idea about the Demon Repellent."

"Sham, how much would you pay in exchange for this Dastan Armor? This is no knockoff, and came from the home of dragons. I would imagine such a relic to be quite valuable, heheh..."

The wagon rolled forward on the road to Goetia, until suddenly someone ordered them to stop. Peeking outside, the party saw a patrol of soldiers blocking the road.

"Well, today's your king's lucky freakin' day mate, because the best problem solvers in the business just rolled up to his doorstep....as ya' can tell by our piles of loot both ancient and forbidden, our magic wagon with a burned-out cardshark drivin' it, and the most heroic freakshow rejects ridin' in the back, waitin' to kill some demons. We specialize in both fixin' strange stuff and trespassin' places we're not s'post to go, so I can just about promise we are the most qualified people to enter Goetia right now. Tell that to your king. And ask if he'll pay us, if ya' please." Atramor nodded to the soldier.

"My good sir. Do you not know the judgement is coming and this city must not close it's gates to those who are your only salvation now? We are sent by God to save your city from the evil that seeks to overtake it. I beseech you to do what you know is right and allow us to rid you of the terror therein. At this point, only God can save you, through his servants, against this demonic manifestation."

QM Note: Apologies, I added it now.

"Sorry, I only sell, don't buy. I have enough junk... err, wares in this wagon as it is."

"I believe that is what we are here for."

The leader of the soldiers looked surprised.

heroicaquest148-marshalbarret.jpg
"Oh? In that case, I should probably escort you to the King. He has just arrived to survey the situation in Goetia - from a safe distance, of course. We have sent several scouts to the town already, but none have returned. King Jovis does not accept supernatural shenanigans in his lands - especially if they involve devouring tax-paying citizens. Please, follow me."

QM Note: I assume you want to equip the Good Book for that.

As the soldier escorted the party down the road, he intently listened to Monk Pretzel's preaching.

heroicaquest148-marshalbarret.jpg
"I have already lost some of my best men in these last couple of days. I can only hope and pray for their safe return, but once you see what the sky is like above Goetia, you will understand that my expectations are not high. If there is even a slim chance you can make it go away, I am willing to take it, rather than sacrificing more of my own men. I am Barret, a marshal in the Heartland army. It has been a pleasure listening to your wise words, friar, so please, let me make a donation to your cause."

Marshal Barret dropped 10 gold to Monk Pretzel's hand.

The light of the dimming day had turned a strange tint of green, and as they neared Goetia, they saw why: a giant, sickly green hole of light had appeared in the sky amidst a storm of swirling clouds. Wind howled around the hills, and a few drops of stinking rainwater fell on their faces.

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"I told you the sight was ghastly", Sham muttered with a shudder.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"That, my friends, is what a gateway to Azazot looks like, if you have never seen one. Just imagine what could come out of a rift so enormous..."

Soon they came to an encampment full of tents, soldiers and horses. They were taken straight to the king, as it was getting late already.

"You are in the presence of King Jovis and his Queen Coreline. Bow thy heads."

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg
"No sense in sticking to formalities at this dark hour, Barret", the king sighed tiredly. "Who are these people you have brought to me and why?"

"These men and women claim they can get rid of that unnatural storm for us. I have no idea how they will do it, but they seem like a respectable and trustworthy lot." The marshal nodded to Monk Pretzel.

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg
"Do explain yourselves", the king said to the heroes with piquing interest.

"That is a portal to Azazot, yes. Though the ones I have seen before did not turn the whole sky green like this... Who knows what could have come out of a gateway that large? And it has been open for so long..." Hybros grimaced.

He tipped his hat to the king. A woman in the Hall dressed and looked similar to these people, though he couldn't recall the name. He pulled out the candy cane that the woman had given to him and began to suck on it thoughtfully. "We are here to solve this problem of yours. The scouts you have sent into Goetia have not returned, yes? Unlike them we have some experience dealing with this sort of thing. We believe someone has summoned an archdemon and perhaps much more, and we were called here to stop it. Do you know of any recent happenings in your kingdom that would seem... hm, out of the ordinary? Strange men in big hats carrying around ominous books? Anything at all that will help us solve this problem?"

Hybros made a noise that could be perceived as a scoff.

I nudge Hybros in the ribs or general abdominal area.

"Then remain blessed Garret. We will do our utmost to destroy this demonic manifestation and with God's help, we will win."

As we approach the king and he poses his question, I respond, bowing low.

"Yes, sir. We intend to end this demonic manifestation as the little one said. Many of us have spent much time fighting against such things. As said, there is, almost certainly someone about who opened the portal to the demons. Likely, this man or woman would be our first target. From there, we would have to target the main demonic influences in the area and destroy them. It's hard to know exactly what we'll do until we know exactly what we're up against, though."

Althior crosses his arms. "There's not much more to it than that, your highness. We could be dealing with a fabled archdemon here too, something that we have experience with. And experience in that field is hard to come by, trust me. We're only here to help," he smirks.

"It sounds like you know a whole lot more about this ordeal than anyone around here. There have been no reports of any big-hatted men, other than myself, of course. Good for us to happen upon such experts, in any case. But pray tell me, that candy cane... It looks just like the peppermint ones Mother makes. You don't happen to be from Heroica, would you?"

"Oh, how exciting! We do have wondered how the old Queen Mother has been faring ever since she left to become a sellsword. Such an odd choice to spend your last days on this world, but dear Quintessa has always had a mind of her own. Have you met her?"

heroicaquest148-kingjovis.jpg
"My darling, please don't talk about Mother like that", the king said, clearly embarrassed. "We had to do what we had to do with her, but let's not make a scene out of it."

heroicaquest148-queencoraline.jpg
"As you wish, my liege. But do send our warmest greetings to her if you happen to meet her!" Something in the queen's voice didn't make the words sound sincere.

"Your help would be most welcome, heroes. How about I gave you 1000 gold to share from the Heartland treasury, should you succeed in making this problem go away? Hopefully some people are still alive below that storm, and you manage to rescue them as well. Marquis Lowcraft and his family have been highly esteemed members of the court for a long time, so it would be a true tragedy to hear they have perished."

"Splendid! We have struck a deal, then! The guards will pass you beyond the safe zone, but after that, you are on your own."

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"Ahem, what comes to supplies, my wondrous Shammobile is still full of common wares that you may buy at any time. I will stay here with the good king and the pretty queen to observe the situation, if you don't mind."

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"That was your mother's wish, as well. And no matter what sort of demonic horde awaits us in that storm, it is nothing compared to Scheherazade's wrath should something happen to you. So stay safe, Sham, and don't try to be a hero." Byblos looked at his party mates with an unbecoming determination. "Are we ready to see what lies within Goetia?"

I try to use Convert on the King.

"Thank you, your most gracious majesty. I do not think I can say that I know your mother, but I do think I must have seen her around the hall. I'm sure she would be delighted to hear from you. In this the hour of your city's plight, I believe we will have to have the full support of God to conquer the demons. As skilled in the art of demon-hunting as we are, there are certain things that must come into play for us to be successful. I do hope you will do your part to help us defeat the devils, by praying to my God for our strength and wisdom in handling this threat."

So saying, I once again bow low.

The king nodded his head, and tossed 10 gold to Pretzel.

"Thank you for your wise words, but surely you mean gods, in plural. We here in Heartland like to keep all our bases covered, so we worship a multitude of deities. But yes, praying to them all is what I have done ever since I saw that dreaded storm."

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"If that is all, we shall be on our way. Stay safe, and we shall see you soon."

heroicadt-shampoo.jpg
"Good luck, everyone!"

The party continued to follow the road between the hills until they hit the epicenter of the storm - a deserted, shadowy town with a sturdy castle at the center, all bathed in the same sickly green light emanating from the rift above. A pillar of light connected the rift and the castle.

Rain and wind kept pounding their faces and cloaks as they walked on the main street. The windows were all dark, with the exception of the castle and another building that looked like a temple. As they approached it, they saw it was dedicated to Mother Danab.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"What do you say?" Byblos shouted through the raging storm. "Shall we try our luck with the temple, or continue straight to the castle? That's where the rift is originating from, so I'd imagine we find the Apprentice there."

At that moment, a bird of prey swooped above their heads and flew towards the castle.

Hybros shrugged. "Maybe someone or something in there can help prepare us for what is ahead. I think we should check the temple first."

Meanwhile Zoot's Reaper was buzzing ever more violently as they neared the pillar.

Althior gives the bird of prey an inquisitive look as it passes overhead. "Whatever is in that castle doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Let's investigate the temple first,"

I de-equip the Good Book and replace it with whichever artifact I originally replaced with it.

I then apply my Telescope to my eye, and look the castle up and down for anything noteworthy.

"If there are any demons to be found here, the temple's where we'll find 'em." Atramor took his hand off his Pheles Kris, it having jumped there reflexively at some point. He instead readied to draw his claws at any moment.

Monk Pretzel scanned the castle battlements in search for anything interesting. He then spotted something:

heroicaquest148-telescope.jpg

It was the same bird of prey - a falcon, in fact - that had just passed over them, landing on the arm of a man wearing a wide-brimmed hat.

The party made their way to the Temple of Mother Danab - not nearly as large or decorative as the white-washed building in Eubric - and Byblos promptly tried the door. It was locked.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg
"Hmm, usually the temples of the Mother are open for all people so they can come in and be cured of their sickness. But Pandemonicon says that this door is not only locked, but sealed with magic as well. Just bursting through will be tricky, but we could always try knocking."

Upon pressing their ears to the door, the heroes could hear suffocated sobbing and whispers from inside the temple. The only windows in the building were narrow ones covered in stained glass that couldn't be seen through.
