Heroica RPG - Quest#148: Once Upon a Time in Goetia

Recommended Posts

"It's time for you to die now you pathetic creature. And calling him your friend? As if you even know the meaning of that word."

If Semyaza is still alive Namyrra repeats, else Namyrra does nothing.

OoC: and one question, what's the current weather?

Hybros attacks Semyaza with Zoot's Reaper and the Heavy Flail in the front row first, then the back row. If she is dead, he slots a Health Core in his Hollow Dagger in place of the Purging Water.

"Ehem, we will need some way to fight this witch eventually, unless she keeps producing foes for us to fight..."

QM Note: None, since the "burning hot" weather was tied to Marilith.

OOC: Since the game script for this round should be obvious, I'll just move things along here.

Atramor swings his Ball and Chain at Semyaza from the back row, doing nothing if she is killed. Althior swings his Scepter of Divine Affinity at Semyaza in the back row, or heals any injured heroes with his Boon Rod if she is killed. Byblos throws the Clock Cog at Semyaza or retrieves the Pandemonicon.

Battle Order:

Pretzel

Pretzel

Hybros

Atramor

Atramor

Namyrra

Hybros

Byblos

Althior

Althior

My electricity situation has been not very good over the past few days. I think I shouldn't have a problem keeping up with the thread, but in case I do, JimB or anyone else can feel free to post actions for me.

When Semyaza falls to Hybros' blades, the immortal Mindflayer known as Baba is left on her own. She seems impossible to beat, but her powers seem to be draining her as well, for suddenly she begins losing her human form, revealing the monster inside.

heroicaquest148-mindflayer.jpg"You have fought well, but now you die."

Just when all hope of defeating the creature is lost, the air in front of the heroes flickers, and a dark figure materializes, holding an elaborate crown in his hands.

heroicaquest148-psycrown.jpg

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"So this is the Mindflayer who has eluded us for all these centuries. You have left an impressive imprint in the history of this world, I must say."

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg"It worked! My Z-mail went through!" Byblos cheered. "You must be from the Trine of Fenario, aren't you?"

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"Yes, I am the head of the council of Fenarian sorcerers, known as the Trine. You may call me..."

heroicaquest148-mindflayer.jpg"The Netherlord!" the mindflayer hissed. She seemed to be writhing in mental pain.

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"You still remember me? I am impressed."

heroicaquest148-mindflayer.jpg"You and your people hunted down and butchered all of my kind. I will never forget that!"

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"Yet you feared us enough not to ever return to Fenario. You still remember this too, then." The Netherlord held up the crown. "The wearer of this Psycrown is immune to your mind-reading abilities, and even when not worn, the artifact prevents you from fleeing this site. You managed to avoid it all this time, but now your fate is sealed.

Heroes of Heroica, the Trine struck a deal with your Veterans after they found out about the Psycrown from the mindflayer's former ally, a werewolf called Ulric. They promised to contact us if they ever came across this mindflayer, and we agreed to come with the Psycrown. However, I must ask you to finish the task for me, for my powers are not what they used to be." The Netherlord looks at Namyrra curiously. "Miss Uq here is young by our standards. I on the other hand have been alive since the reign of the first Fenarian king. Speaking of you, Namyrra, your aunt misses you and hopes you could one day forgive what happened with your parents and come back home."

heroicaquest148-mindflayer.jpg"Will you stop this incessant blabbering and fight me, damn it!"

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg"Very well. Which of you will take the Psycrown and use it against this wretched creature?"

Sorry, I was waiting for all actions to be posted before I posted the battle order.

OOC: My bad. I thought it would be fairly obvious so no need to wait for everyone to get their actions in. Sandy, I should've gotten a little overkill gold.

"...I will take it. I am just glad we have some way to fight her." Hybros equips the Psycrown in place of the Crystal Shoes, then dumps his Minimizing Dust all over the Mindflayer. "Take this!"

With the witch weakened, the opportunity to end her reign is wide open. Hybros prepares to attack her twice in the front row with Zoot's Reaper and the Sword of Ancestral Hatred (next round - barring any surprises I think we can just autoroll into that).

heroicaquest148-mindflayer.jpg "Gyaaaaahhhhh!!!"

The death cry of the mindflayer was otherwordly. All the power she had gathered throughout thousands of years were nullified in a fleeting moment. Being a true loner, she had made the fatal error of underestimating the effectiveness of cooperation. With the whole world against her, all the might and all the magic in the universe could not save her, for she was just one among billions. That realization struck her at the moment of her death.

One fatal error, and Baba was erased from history.

Hybros lowered his weapons. It was finally over. "Heh... Well from all that I've heard about this witch she certainly was not much of a match for us. Boomingham, Guts and Eric would be impressed, I think, heheheh."

OOC: Sandy, did you mean Winged Warrior the class in regards to the Garuda Wings, or any flying character?

I clench my fists in fury as the party elects Hybros to fight and kill the mindflayer. Will this be the moment when he betrays us all at last? Have all his years with Heroica been for this final betrayal.

Hence, I am more than relieved when, after pouring his dust on her, he stamps her into the ground.

"Good riddance!" I say, spitting on her tiny frame.

"Good work!" I manage to say to Hybros.

QM Note: I meant winged warrior, sorry. It's corrected now.

The heroes looked at each other, panting and out of breath. The battle was over. Their enemies were either dead or banished back to the dimension they came from. The body of the one who started this all lied next to his former lover who was now relieved from the burden of vengeance.

But the rift was still looming in the sky above them.

heroicaquest148-netherlord.jpg "You are a bearer of the Pandemonicon", the Netherlord said to Byblos. "You must close that rift before more demons pour out of it."

Byblos gazed up with a serious expression.

heroicanpc-byblos.jpg "I am aware. But this book, it has brought nothing good to the world. It cannot be destroyed or lost, it will eventually resurface somewhere. I know this because I have formed a strong bond with the book, and I know what it is capable of. What I am capable of through using it. That is why I have decided to close the rift, but from the other side. I only would like to request that you give me Solomon's copy of the Pandemonicon too, Althior. That way the world would be rid of two volumes of the devilish codex, leaving only one behind - gods know where it is. What do you say?"

Would Althior comply?

"Hmm...as much as I'd like you to take them over there, so we can be rid of these horrid books once and for all, will we be able to combat the remaining Pandemonicon without having one ourselves?"

"Master Pretzel, you do have a good point, but remember that we had no Pandemonicon when we got hold of the first one, so I'm confident that we can do it again. Master Emorith, I think you definitely should accept master Byblos' proposal."

Althior hesitates, the words flying by him seeming like a blur. "What will become of you, then, Byblos? However odd it may sound, Heroica still needs you,"

Hybros sheathed his weapons, and paused. "...No. Byblos, my people have endured in the void for many years. I would not wish the same fate upon you or anyone else. That is why I need that Pandemonicon. There are still some of us imps in that void. I figured out how to get them out once, and I can do it again. I must do it again. And the Monk is right. Perhaps the final Pandemonicon is in the hands of someone even more dangerous. We will not know until we face him. Until then, we must learn what we can from this book."

He held out a hand to take the Pandemonicon from Althior. "Please."

Atramor stared down at the archdemon playing card in his hand, and then briefly at Baba's corpse, then Catnip's, then finally back at Hybros.

"Hell. No."

The rogue steps between Althior and Byblos with the Pandemonicons, and Hybros. His mythril claws, moving and shimmering and very alive underneath a fresh coat of black demon's blood, are still in hand.

"I appreciate you wantin' to help your people, mate, but look around you. Byblos, Namyrra, back me the hell up here, you both were in Azzurat, you know what these things are capable. I'll take these two back through that damn portal myself if I need to, but they're NOT stayin' in this world, Hybros. Not after all this."

Atramor drops his stolen loot in the pile and gives all his gold to Althior.

Hybros frowns. Zoot's Reaper was still buzzing in it's sheath, now whispering wildly into Hybros' head. He rested a hand on the hilt to quiet it. "In the wrong hands. If we send the Pandemonicon copies back to their homes they are only more likely to be found by those who want to escape and back into this world. These archdemons can never be killed, and they will never stop trying to escape. The book is safest in my hands."

"There are no right hands for this thing. The Pandemonicons are useless in Azazot, and they clearly need mortals to be used. You're one of them. Who's to say it'll even work for you?"

Atramor glared at the scythe in Hybros' hands. Phlegethon and its twin the Pheles Kris might've had a similar effect on him, once. No more.

"You're not thinkin' straight, mate. Every one of them in our world is another Azzurat waitin' to happen - another million people waitin' to die for someone's world domination attempt. Sorry, mate, but your people aren't worth that risk."

"Atramor and Namyrra are right. We've gotten possession of these books without the books help. We will do it again if we have to. If we don't succeed the first time, we will do it a second time until we do succeed. We are Heroes, we will be successful in the end."

You are wrong, Althior, Heroica does not need me. It never has. I was given the job of a librarian for being too useless for anything else. I have taught Bookmark to continue my work, and I believe it can do it even better that me. No, my future is in the Void and I will take my own Pandemonicon with me. The only question remains, will you give me the other one?"

And Hybros, if I meet your kind while in the Void, I will surely help them find their way back here. It's a slim chance at best, but I will make that promise."

The whispering from Zoot's Reaper finally stopped. Hybros lowered his head so the rim of his hat covered his eyes. "...Perhaps... there is another way. I do not know, but what you say is true. I... I cannot risk something like this happening again. It is no use if my people do not have a world to come back to."

He raised his head to look at Byblos. "Then we will see each other again someday." He held out a hand. "Thank you for assistance with the book the first time around. If anyone can be trusted with it, it is you."
