Technic Elementary Bible

[Zerobricks]

This is a project that I've been working on for the past few years. I worked really hard the last few weeks to get it to a point where the first version can now finally be released before I move to new challenges.

The point of this free document is help show people who are new to the modern Technic system and want to learn about the basic elements, mechanism, systems and techniques.

This is project is my gift back to the LEGO community.

Remember that is this the first, basic version of the document. It’s probably full of typos, mistakes, not to mention lacking proper graphical design. I do plan to improve it and add additional content in the future.

As you have written about typos, etc., have you thought about open-sourcing it? Like putting the source in whatever format you've written this in on GitHub, so others can help with spelling, etc. or even add new sections?

Wow, that is a huge amount of work! Reading that definitely brought back memories of browsing Sariel's Technic Builder's Guide, but with up-to-date parts! Not something I would see myself reading through or referring to at this point, but definitely something I would have used and obsessed over earlier in my building career!

Also, do you have instructions hosted for your models somewhere by any chance?

Suggestions:

- In the track and link section, you can add the special link piece used in the Pacman set. 

 

- In the section for transmission, you can add some combinations of gear meshes at a distance of 1.5 studs, namely 8 x 16, worm gear x 16, 12 x 12, and worm gear x 12. I used them in several of my creations. The most recent example is the drive train for the cranes in the trailer of my mini 42078.

 

- In the worm gear section, you can add the new worm gear and nut pieces. The worm gear is compatible with 3 different nut pieces, but only the first one has Technic interface.

 

- There should be a section for variable length transmission. The pieces that can be used are the frictionless CV joints, but there are also other pieces.

 

 

- There should be a section for one way transmission. You can introduce some common ratchet techniques for winch, uses of worm gears, as well as the new ratchet gear.

 

- There should be a section for concentric transmission. I saw that it is already briefly mentioned in the part section for turntables, but this topic can be expanded with some techniques like using clutch gears and driving rings. 42209 is a recent example that uses this technique brilliantly.

- Speaking of turntables, I think it should be noted that the 60z turntable with bevel gears hasn't appeared in Technic sets since 2021, so it might have been phased out. The 60z turntable that is in use since then has straight gears and thus can't be driven perpendicularly.

Thank you for the praise! I wrote the document in Word, though I'm not very experienced with managing projects on GitHub.

I was thinking of adding that part originally, but since it has only appeared in one set, I decided to skip it. But can add it.

That's a good idea, I think i can use the UCS AT AT walker for example. I will add it

At the time of the writing of the document, the technic nut was not yet available. I will add that unique and reversible worm gear

Same for the variable length transmission, will add it now that all parts are available digitally.

Good idea adding a one way transmission chapter, will add it as soon as the new clutch gear is available

I'm not familiar with the concentric transmission. Can you please provide more info?

I plan to update the bible with the ideas above and new parts, especially new parts from the Spear as soon as they are available in LDD.

Concentric transmission is transmission of two inputs in one axle. You already mentioned that in the example of driving two functions through the 60z turntable in 42070. Earlier sets that use that technique are 8258, 8042, and 9397. Most recently, 42209 uses it to transmit the drivetrain from the rear axle to the electric motor. Check the instruction at step 135.

Also, in either the section for worm gear or for gear rack, it should also be mentioned that a worm gear can also act as a gear rack. This technique is used in the snow plow of the B model of 8011.

Ok, essentially GitHub is a platform for hosting all kinds of files, primarily used for programming projects. The special part is, that others can propose changes to the document directly and you can approve them. You can also add collaborators which can edit without needing your approval every time. The full history of the document is also saved. If you just use the website it's not that hard to learn, there are food tutorials.
