Zerobricks Posted July 7 Posted July 7 (edited) While brinstorming ideas, I came up with a really wacky idea. Why not build a classic, but give it a twist? With that in mind, I decided to build a 1:12 scale DeLorean with tracks for wheels and the following functions and features: Motorized drive and steering using PF L and 1 PU L motor Powered and controlled by a BuWizz 3.0 AWD Independent suspension on all.. Tracks? Tiltable track bases Working steering wheel Working V6 fake engine Openable gullwing doors Fully detailed interior with 2 seats Accurate shaping using a 3D reference This is the result and the current WIP status: As with all my replicas of real models, I found a 3D reference model, edited out one of the doors so that interior is better visible and imported it into LDD: As you can see, the model follows the reference quite well given it's scale, I even went into the detail of slightly tapering both bumpers. Of course the wheel arches and before mentioned bumpers had to be slightly cut to fit the tracks, but the model should still be instantly recognizable. So now it's just the matter of building it from real bricks, I will post WIP photos as the project progresses. Edited July 22 by Zerobricks Quote
JesseNight Posted July 7 Posted July 7 Nice! I'm not a fan of the tracks but the DeLorean looks really good! Which parts did you make the black louvres on the rear from if you don't mind me asking? I've been modifying my Icons BTTF DeLorean to a regular one, and still not entirely happy about that part. Quote

Thank you. I just used a combiantion of 89679 and 71682 panels. I also added half pins to the frame now to support them, so they don't flop down, I will post an update soon. Quote
Zerobricks Posted July 9 Author Posted July 9 Here is a WIP photo of the chassis: After building the chassis, I noticed the front suspension was a bit too hard, so I redesigned it by moving the upper shock positions a bit closer to remove the preload. Right now it's at 1435 parts, which is actually more than the 42210 Skyline even though it's smaller. Here's the current state, I'm just waiting for a few parts to finish this project, hopefully this week. Quote
Seasider Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Doc would approve Would be interested to see this as a non-tracked model too side question how do you import cad files ? And can it be done into Stud.io too as I use that as I’m on a Mac Quote

You can add connection points in partdesigner too. Quote
1gor Posted July 10 Posted July 10 I hope at the end you will use this black sprocket https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=57519#T=C&C=11 Chassis looks simple... (You know me; I'm alwats trying to make frame based strucrure that has minimal parts with maximal stiffness) Looking forward to see endresult in real bricks. Quote

That's looking really cool and the chassis is really clean compared to my builds, and cool idea with the cardans for the front glass. I think that technic sets are a bit wiggle-wiggle as I say and not very sturdy so that's probably why your has more parts. Quote
MangaNOID Posted July 11 Posted July 11 A supercar in a tracked vehicle contest Nicely done... It is looking very nice though Quote

MangaNOID Posted July 11 Posted July 11 After re-reading what I wrote I apologise to @Zerobricks for my above comment as it may come across as a bit mean to your entry which was not my intent at all super cars permeate LEGO everywhere so I saw a funny side to the supercar in a tracked vehicle contest but now realise that it may have negative impact on this topic so would like to rectify that as much as possible with this apology. As I did say before and I’ll repeat that, as always, your build is looking very good Quote

As I did say before and I’ll repeat that, as always, your build is looking very good No worries, none taken. I'm currrently waiting for parts to arrive, I need like 40x 1x2 beams with crossholes for the doors and other details. Meanwhile I recolored the bumpers and sides to be black to fit more with the original reference and optimised the design more. Quote
Zerobricks Posted July 17 Author Posted July 17 Here's the finished model and I'm really proud how it turned out. I think it's one of my best representations so far and I really like how the front and rear end gently taper, even the official 10300 Time Machine doesn't have such a detail! I really like the stance the tracks give it: View of the backside showing the opening gullwing doors, working steering wheel, gauges, the rear louvers and of course the massive back lights: I put a lot of effort in making sure the seats are properly sized and that there's plenty of space in the interior despite of all the motorized functions. Also you can see the fake V6 in the back, I decided to go with transparent blocks to contrast the grey exterior. I could have used green ones from the Volvo loader, but that would have been too much. Also notice all the angles of the front hood, dashboard and steering column: And here you can see the angled suspension arms and the massive ground clearance the tracks provide. All in all I used 4 yellow hard shock absorbers to support the weight of this 1445 parts model: As for perofrmance, the model runs really good, there are no issues with the gear train, steering or suspension.Though the steering angle is of course a bit limited due to the massive tracks and limited angle of CV joints. As usual, I will shoot a video about it, but after the BuWizz gathering. That's it for now, hope you like it! Quote
1gor Posted July 17 Posted July 17 Indeed bodywork looks very smooth, actually much better than I could imagine. Quote
Zerobricks Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 (edited) And here are the photos and a video of the model in the great outdoors, specifically on pebbles: And a few more on a different terrain: And of course a video: Here is the list of the final features and functions: Motorized AWD drive and steering using PF L and 1 PU L motor Powered and controlled by a BuWizz 3.0 - AWD Primary independent suspension on all tracks Secondary suspension - tiltable track bases Working steering wheel connected to the steering PU L motor Working V6 fake engine connected to the AWD system Openable gullwing doors Fully detailed interior with 2 seats Accurate shaping using a 3D reference Built from 1445 parts Dimensions: 36 x 19 x 13 cm Weight: cca. 1200 grams I'm so happy to have finished another succesful project which combines functionality, aesthetics, accuracy and simple joy of driving it over obstacles. I'm for sure keeping this one assembled, can't wait to test it on snow! P.S. Anyone interested in LDD file too? Edited July 22 by Zerobricks Quote
ludov Posted July 22 Posted July 22 Really cool build, too bad there’s no flux capacitor in the back The fifth photo (doors open, from behind) is very low resolution for me, maybe it didn’t upload correctly? Quote
