What if I tell you heavy equipment is now the soul of city instead while cars become the new soul for technic...

The lock mechanism can be something new if it allows to change of tool using only the gearbox.

But it won't make it worth 400€ (or even 250€ if we wait for a good deal).

The shop.lego site mentions a rechargeable battery, this might go some way towards explaining the price.

Though not nearly enough.

I only found this section, it doesn't mention rechargeable - "Includes a battery powered motor – This set comes with a battery powered motor to power the LEGO® toy excavator"

In french, it says "this set includes a rechargeable battery (working with a USB-C cable, not included)".

It seems to be a copy-paste mistake from the description of 42214, that one really has a rechargeable battery.

It has been a long time since I posted anything.... I have degenerated into a "lurker."   Took a view this morning holding out for some positive news.   While I agree the set may have some upsides, the price is indefensible, and that is someone who defended Lego Technic pricing from 2010-2020.   Just can't do it anymore.

The Technic genre has lost me.  Too much redundancy, boring sets.... too high of prices.

On to other genres I go....

Personal opinion: the best Technic set of the year is Ideas Steam Boat

Try my MOCs

Wayy to expensive, but I am enjoying that it's a return to "classic" technic. One motor and a gearbox is how it should be in my opinion. The last set that had this was the airbus from a few years back

Exactly, seems to have simillar functionality and part couunt as the Airbus, but much more inflated price. This one is the black sheep of this wave IMO, way too expensive and not even RC. On other hand, at least the PU L motors are still being produced.

Yeah, exactly. But the 42145 had a complex rotor functions, and 2 rotor speeds. Why this 400€ set, can't have any of those cool functions. I wish this had indepentently controlled tracks, via gearbox and one motor, and many more. To justify the cost, but nope this is too expensive. And not as complex as the airbus:/.

Mixed feelings here too. It looks nice and I like the new bucket function but the price is way too high, even considering the rising costs of manufacture.

I like the bucket the most.
Do we know yet if the 'Volvo' branding a sticker rather than a printed piece, so it can be reused on other machinery MOCs?

I'm not sure how I feel about this set. I think it works well as a 2010s-style, high end but sub-flagship set, with more parts for detail. The trouble is that it's priced like a modern flagship, without having the functionality or motors we've come to expect for that price.

I don't think superstructure rotation and drive make interesting motorized functions if you don't have RC. The additional motorized functions I'd like to see on an excavator are one on the tool (rotation for the bucket, operation for the hammer) and possibly an additional actuated boom stage. But from a quick google search the real EC500 does not appear to have those either.

Based on the photos it definitely looks like a sticker.

I find it amusing/confusing that first everybody is complaining  about Control+ because the hub is always RC and you always need a smart device to play; now they bring back a “dumb” hub with a complicated gearbox and people start complaining it’s not RC.
I think it’s a cool set. The price is a bit steep, but you get a bunch of big LA’s. I might get it.

At this price point it needed to be full RC. No RC basic battery box normally means cheaper set

I have a question about your last sentence. Did people think L motors were getting discontinued?
