42128 - Heavy-Duty Tow Truck
allanp replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Why's that? The CAT I believe is due for a later release, like around September/October I think. -
I don't think being a professional industrial designer automatically gets you a job as a Technic designer, nor does being an afol. Being either of those things doesn't mean you are able to design a set that I will want to buy. That's the thing that I think hampers most AFOLs in particular. They end up designing these massive models that have lots of motors, would cost a fortune and all while not being particularly mechanically ground breaking, realistic, robust and reliable. They might be some of those things, but how often do we rip apart official sets for failing in any one of these aspects? I think Milan got the job because he consistently made models that were not crazy big, were robust, recognisable and usually within very tight constraints, in his case using the parts from an existing model with his alternate builds. I can see why an industrial designer, having worked to similar constraints, might have an edge over AFOLs that are used to building whatever they want.

Technic 2021 Set Discussion
allanp replied to LvdH's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is a weird oddity. They have a "dumb" battery box, probably boxes full from not releasing the v22. So why no supplementary set? Maybe they are waiting for some new piece of PU hardware to be released, like a mega buggy power motor or a mini motor or lights? -

Does anyone recognise that large grey box piece located in the fuel tank? I don't know what it is. As this set comes with a manual pump.....like @Touc4nxsaid, could it be an air tank? It looks a little small for that sure but it would most likely come with one for each side. Being square sided would also give it more internal volume than a cylindrical tank of the same dimensions. -

I am doubtful. Unbrickme in a video said he saw a wire in it but he pointed to a pin hole on one of the seats. Would be nice but I don't see PU advertised anywhere. But I am interested to know what the grey box in the fuel tank is. Could it be an air tank? -

Looks like there's 2 of the 1x11 cylinders, as the rear arm looks to be unfolded with a thin cylinder, not a thick one. Day one buy for me, can't wait! -
There is still a chance this set could be pretty decent. It does have those new tyres that would work great with the claas tyres on tractors and backhoes. So what else could it have to make it great? For me, a realistic drive train. So that means NOT having separate motors and drives for each axle, but instead having a single "engine" located under the hood at the front of the vehicle (made from one new more powerful motor preferably, or multiple hard coupled motors which I still say is now possible due to the higher output speed and lower torque of PU XL motors compared to PF XL). Let's say an inline six engine sandwiched between two PU L-motors looking like two massive engine starter motors, all hard coupled together located under the hood, which is then connected to a realistic gearbox, meaning it has many different sizes of clutch gears (not just the 16 and 20 tooth ones we have now), which then goes to a transfer box roughly in the middle of the wheel base which then sends it power via long, fast spinning prop shafts to the front and rear axles. The majority of the down gearing is then done in the axles and the diffs may also have the same remote locking capabilities of the real truck. Having the weight of all the motors at the front and battery box somewhere in the middle would give good weight distribution, and having the power of all drive motors available to every wheel would make this a pretty decently performing crawler, providing the tyres are good and grippy. Having this arrangement would make it appealing to me. But if it's like the previous 42099 crawler in terms of drive train "realism" then it's a hard pass (although, I still love those 42099 reduction hubs, 42099 will always get some love for that!)

Technic 2021 Set Discussion

Or zetros tyres at the front and claas tyres at the back. -
This is an intriguing rumour. Will it have a complete hull or just to the water line? Complete hull would be better so you can have the rudder and propellers and all the shaping of the hull. Will it have a full interior, with every room and every floor (floors being separateable like the modulars), with the iconic staircases leading into each other, with furniture in every room, and fully detailed engine room? Even with 10000 pieces that's a huuuuuge stretch. My guess is it will be a highly detailed exterior only, with possibly a small selection of interiors (like they did with the millennium falcon).

My guess would be the ability to work on a model of a size and subject you have little interest in ( like you have to make a 150pc hovercraft when you really want to make a 4000pc JCB backhoe). And when you think you're finished you're told you have to make all kinds of changes to your uninteresting little hovercraft to make it easier to build and cheaper to manufacture, which makes it even more uninteresting, then you have to explain to some focus group/penny pinchers why the model you spent ages on is so uninteresting! That's my guess

Technic 2021 Set Discussion

Maybe the CAT, like the Merc, is also very different from the prelim pictures. I can't see the CAT in the preliminary picture having anywhere near that amount of pieces. -
For what it's worth I wouldn't refer to a trans woman as a "he" when I know they might hear me. Regardless of if the taking of offence is justified or not, it's so easy to avoid causing offence that way that such a courtesy would be rude not to give. But in my mind and elsewhere the "he" will persist due to fundamentally different beliefs and opinions on what gender is. It's not due to some irrational fear of trans people. I don't find them scary at all! It really is just a different opinion. Saying this thread should continue only to educate the stoopid transphobes is missing the point of what a two way dialogue is supposed to be. It is thanks to this thread that I have first heard the phrases "male brain wiring" and "female brain wiring". I had never heard of these concepts before. If such a concept is reality I can certainly see how it would be easier to make the body match the brain than it would be the other way round. Sadly after some reading (yes, I did reading!, Not trying to use this thread as a gay wiki!) I didn't find the case for these concepts compelling so I guess I'm still none the wiser. Worth a try though. If you find it compelling and you find it helps explain your own identity to you then you really don't need my, or any one else's permission to continue to believe what makes sense to you, that should go without saying. This is not about one person trying to force a belief onto another. It's about understanding each other. If for example, you see some money has been taken out of your account, and you are given no explanation why, you may feel some wrong has been done to you. But if someone then explains that it was to pay for a purchase you made a month ago, well then you understand that no wrong has been done to you and everyone feels better. I have seen real transphobes, the people in this thread are not that. We are simply trying to explain that we have a different point of view. We don't agree with everything you say, just like you don't agree with everything we say, and that is ok. We say these things because we think (in our opinion) we have explanations for some of the things that make you feel bad about this whole discussion, and while it would be so much easier to say nothing, to not expose all our knuckle dragging bigotry as some might see it, is it not better and indeed more compassionate to at least try to offer more understanding of each other? Isn't that what we all need and want from each other?

@Lord Insanity that all depends on if there is such a thing as a male wired, and a female wired brain. There are neuroscientists that say there is, there are other neuroscientists that say that there isn't, and that the studies to say there is are very weak. So once again we are left to form our own opinions. I'm not sure people realise just how much opinion is being conflated with fact. In my own opinion (which could be wrong) I see many men with whom I am alike with regards to our "brain wiring" (like in terms of empathy, likes, dislikes, humour, all sorts of things), and many others that I am nothing alike and never wish to be. Same with women. We all just seem so individual and different that the idea of a "male brain" and a "female brain" seems unfounded to me.

@Karalora understand that terms like "overrule a person's self image" and "act of aggression" to me seem rather exaggerated and over blown. I honestly don't believe that I'm committing any acts of aggression or hatred or bigotry or Naziism, nor am I trying to overrule a person's self image, by disagreeing with you. I believe there's far more to you than your gender. When everyone, boys and girls included, are truly equal, your gender becomes almost meaningless to me in comparison to all the things about you that do matter, like your personality, reason, kindness, patience, compassion and ability to see things from another person's perspective just to name a few. And yes, believe it or not I do have the right to disagree. Everybody does. The intolerance comes from trying to deny that right. I'm not trying to force you to agree with me, but I do expect that you don't try to force me to agree with you. Edit: Please also understand that for years I have lived with clinically diagnosed severe (near suicidal) depression. If you think I don't know what a mental disorder is like, believe me I know (edit not looking for sympathy btw as I've mostly beaten it with time) I hate joining discussions like this and saying what many don't want to hear. But I also know than many with gender dysphoria suffer the same demons I have. And unless this conversation is allowed (not necessarily on Eurobricks of course) I fear it will not get better. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am wrong.

I do not wish to upset anyone. My original post was an attempt to explain why I think TLG should just stay non political on this subject because of all the bigoted intolerance I see coming from both sides. Perhaps I should not have tried to explain myself further when asked about it.

@Lira_Bricks the difference of opinion we have is so fundamental that we shall never agree. The difference is that I'm fine with that while you are not. I never once said nor implied that I don't want you to exist. Far from it. If I saw a man physically abusing you I would fight him to protect your existence. If for example, I claimed to be 30 years old, when physically I am not in fact 30 years old, then you disagreeing with my claim that I am 30 years old would in no way deny my existence as a human being. It would simply mean that you disagree with one singular claim that I make about myself. This does not invalidate anyone's existence or prove any existence of hate or intolerance from anyone. The toilet issue I admit is a tricky one to answer in a way that would satisfy everyone. I'd be happy with having all public toilets being genderless as long as they are clearly defined as such. @PhoenixBuilder actually many in the trans community are demanding that I do not follow my own ethical moral code. When someone is born a male (and I'm not talking to the very few that are intersex) then they transition to becoming a female, to them that is their truth, to them, it is not a lie and comes from a place of trying to live their truth and I fully understand and accept that. But to me, refering to someone that was born a male as "she" is a lie. I'm fine with those born biologically male identifying their selves as female. But many are not fine with me identifying those born male as "he". I am happy to try to explain further if you guys wish, but I'm also happy to just live and let live. I won't continue this unless there are any specific questions for me.

@Lira_Bricks I didn't mean any nastyness. It's just a different point of view. I may be wrong and ignorant, but I am not nasty or bigoted and will not be made to feel as such. I just haven't found *some* of the arguments of the trans community to be as persuasive as others. I don't think I should be made to apologize for that. This should not offend anyone but for some reason it does, which to me looks like some of the intolerance I was talking about. We have different lives and different lived experiences which will necessarily lead to different points of view, and we have to allow for that without resorting to calling each other nasty. I may disagree but will fight for your right to say it sort of thing. I really didn't mean to cause any hurt feelings, so unless you would like me continue (I really don't mind either way) I shall bow out if this discussion. I really didn't mean anything in a nasty way. I would like to extend my hopes of peace and love to you as fellow traveller in life.

Intolerance exists on both sides, from those who think trans people should be shunned into the shadows, but also from those who seek to punish and silence those who use "the wrong" pronoun, or just don't agree that men should be allowed to use the women's bathroom or take part in women's sports. There is intolerance everywhere from everyone and in that respect everyone is certainly not awesome. But I get the idea that everyone is awesome is a positive feeling one, just not sure I can agree that the best way to promote that is to pick one intolerant side over another. Lego should just stay non political.
