Yeah, I thought it was getting too washed out if I lightened it any more but it does look a little odd. Next time I have my light box set up I will try again. I think the position/direction of the lamps actually makes a big difference.
-
Yep, I used my digital camera at very close range in a light box. A little photoshop magic and voila! I was quite pleased. :-$ For these close up shots I am thinking a tiny tripod would be very useful as I have trouble holding the camera still enough. I must have had to retake several shots several times (I was also taking pics of other figs.) oo7 got the head right first guess. I am planning to do an older (admiral's portrait) version using the Old Ben Kenobi head with grey hair and the fancy hat.

Finally got it done and uploaded! The morally upright captain who will one day be Admiral, Lord Stackton. Now if I can just get busy and build his favorite ship: HMS Impermeable. :)

What a cool idea! I should have brought my pirate sig-fig (which I think I have it ready to be photographed now thanks to the cool tutorial) and asked if "I" could tour the ship. Maybe even get myself invited to dinner. I think this will be a great pirate project for cons like the CC Photoshoot at BrickFest. I will host something @ NWBrickCon in October but that will be another post once I have worked out some details.
-
Perhaps the cannon making index could be included on the Tutorials page? If I was looking to make cannons that is where I would look. *sweet*
-
You can also use the BrickLink Catalog to find out what sets had which pieces (by looking up the pieces or the sets).

Seeing the ship in person was great. The size is overwhelming when you get close up. The modularity allowed for access to the interiors along with some sections of removable decking. The interor details were almost more impressive than the overall design. I did have one nit to pick however. The Admiral was hosting some officers to dinner in his cabin and they were all wearing their bicorne hats. This is not, I think accurate historical practice to wear tall hats at dinner (or indeed anywhere inside a warship.) *sweet*

He just sent me note after I added his site to my links page and left a note in his guestboook. I expressed admiration for his stuff and he thanked me for the compliments. I can have a look through my old emails but I did go through a big "delete old emails" phase so I might not have it any more. :-/

*sweet* I loved his work and actually corresponded with him briefly years ago. Thanks for saving the site (you can also use the Wayback Machine to recover old websites btw). I have a highlander somewhere made from his design and I collected a few of the dark torsos and shakos in case I ever need a few riflemen. I wonder what happened to him?

I came across this yesterday and I can't find it in the cannon index. I think this would really look good on a bomb ketch: (Without the train bits of course X-D )

Vote for the domain name of the new Pirate LEGO Portal website

First, this is not accurate as the laws regarding not-for-profit organizations differ greatly in different legal jursidictions. Here in Canada they can be registered provincially or federally. Provincial non-profits require about $50 and 5 members to sign papers. However, the courts in Canada may also recognize unincorporated associations (ie clubs that have not formally registered). Second, this has abolutely nothing to do with registering as a dot.org. If this was the case then we would have to register as a legal business (sole proprietership, partnership or corporation) before we could get a dot.com domain. Domains are chosen by the registrant and neither dot.com nor dot.org are highly regulated so it is really how you see yourself and wish to project to the world. Dot.com says you are a money-making operation and dot.org says you are some sort of not-for-profit entity (club, charity, sports organization, whatever) There are lots of dot.orgs out there and it has no effect whatsoever on their popularity, hit counts or whatever criteria has been suggested to argue against it's use. Dot.com may sound "cooler" to some but that is about it. Third, unless something has changed the .com domain is still on the table so perhaps a little more patience is in order. :) -
Nice use of those large yellow "flower" pieces. I never know what to do with them but I like them for some reason. *sweet*

Them's fightin' words. >8-) I'll take Lucky Jack Aubrey over Vomiting Horatio Hornblower any day. :-$ Excellent ship BTW. I like the full contingent of marines.

It's just advertising their service while maintaining the hosting until the required time is up. As a registrar they have to keep it for 30 days after expiry in case the old owner decides to re-register the domain. They might as well make themselves look like nice people while doing so. Sure is, BUT it might take longer to transfer from one registrar to another. The fastest way is through the original registrar. -

GoDaddy.com is the registrar. They have not "parked" anything. They were simply the registrar NOT THE REGISTRANT (big difference) and have to follow the rules that apply to all registrars. They are not doing anything with the domain but what they have to do to be allowed to continue to operate as a domain registrar. They are not allowed to ask for more money for the domain than the standard, official rates. If they did so they could lose their licence. You could always write to them and inquire about registering the domain now. It would cost nothing and maybe help to put your mind at ease or, in the worst case, discover whether there is another potential REGISTRANT also interested. *sweet* -

I wouldn't worry too much just yet. The 12th of March date is the mandated waiting period as per the rules of being a domain registrar. No domain registrar is supposed to register ANY domain name to someone who is not the current registrant before the 30 day waiting period is up. It is simply a way to give registrants every chance to re-register. -

As I posted in the other thread: 30 days is the minimum time but you should be able to try to register on 12 March (if that is the choice.) -

OK, why are you reading my mind and posting exactly what I wanted to say! :) -
You know what. You are right. I had a quick peek at your new portal page (looks nice) and frankly I would rather shut up and be inspired by cool Pirate creations than indulge in petty bickering. Sorry to cause you a headache. I'll be quiet for a while.

Of course eventually you had to get personal and attack me because I don't spend all my time writing posts. Of course my opinions are worthless because I have not spent hours writing posts to this forum. For the record, just because I don't post a lot does not mean I do not read posts. When I have something useful to say I do so. I don't babble on like an idiot about every topic that comes up just so I can boost my post count! My careful reading of the posts led me to suggest an early move to independance. Which, AS I ALREADY STATED, I thought you were working towards in the long-term. When I suggested a move sooner rather than later you and Boney did NOT reply "not now because...but in the future when we meet [insert criteria here]." From your lack of critical response and your allowing Boney's declarations to go to unchallenged (after carefully challenging earlier of his assertions) I can come to no other reasonable conclusion than you are not interested in an independant LEGO pirates website. As for your "5 minutes" comment. What an insidious, spiteful load of crap. I NEVER suggested it would take "5 Minutes" to migrate to a new server and set up an independant website. I DID try to point out that if you are going to redesign what we already have and then down the road have to build the new site it would be less work overall to just go straight to the new site. I apologize for trying to save you work in the long-term. I am sorry for suggesting that this community is growing and strong enough to stand on it's own. I regret my temerity in assuming that a lowly "newbie" could in any way contribute ideas to this commnity.
-
I don't think I've misinterpreted anything but it's possible. X-D As for independance: you and he (the ones who seem to be making all the decisions) have made it very clear that the Pirate LEGO Forum is not now and will never be independant. All the tinkering in the world doesn't make you an independant site. Being an independant site does that. I was happy to support this forum a step towards a reborn/re-imagined Piratebricks (or whatever) but there seems little advantage in supporting an EB sub-forum when a LUGNET sub-forum is a better platform for a world-wide LEGO community.
-
My apologies. Perhaps your Forum identity as a dictator colours my reading of your posts. I was obviously confused by your repeated declarations and instructions that sounded an awful lot like orders. When you get to decide what is and is not appropriate in a thread you sound somehwat imperious. Perhaps if you actually addressed the questions raised instead of simply declaring that you personally like it one way and so all discussion must end you might come across less dictatorially. *sweet*

And let me make it equally clear that I am not talking about "a new pirate forum" I am simply suggesting that we are already a distinct community and that we should move the whole thing onto an independant webspace. For virtually the same effort as your "restructuring", it would allow us to add improvements, increase traffic and relieve stress on the EB system. Continuing to abuse EB is a mistake that will eventually cause problems. I'm sorry that your personal wishes are more important than the community. I guess I should go back to LUGNET.pirates where there already existed an open forum, articles on topics such as building Cannons, an index of Ship MOC's and a seamless connection to a world-wide network of AFOLs. I suppose I will miss the Pirate smileys and lovely banners but if that is all you are offering to accompany your megalomania it seems like a small price to pay. Hmmm, before Piratebricks.com died the "owner" there also was talking a lot about restructuring and decided every issue by himself... You obviously will never listen to me but I hope eventually you realize this a community, not your personal dominion.

As I thought we discussed back in December in "The future direction of the Pirate LEGO Forum" thread I am speaking of a whole new website. 1) I do not believe that the LEGO pirate community is much smaller than the castle community and an independant website, properly promoted and managed would demonstrate this by attracting MORE users. 2) Who says you cannot still be a part of EB? No one is going to stop you visiting. However I am the other side of the coin. I find it annoying to be part of the EB system becasue I cannot use the "View New Posts" function because the results are from ALL forums, not just Pirates. As well, I am from Canada which makes me feel like an intruder into someone elses forum which is why I only came here after Pirate Bricks.com was long dead and gone. And being an independent website would make the search results BETTER. Would make finding us EASIER and would stop the complaints from other EB users about how this forum does not fit and is hurting EB. (see discussion referenced above.) I'm not suggesting anything drastic either. We have a forum, a selection of How-to articles, lots of eager people. What the heck else do we need? Classic-Castle started off with less than what we have and they are pretty successful. It's time to grow up. We were nurtured by EB but it is time to move out of the house. :-$

I mean they could bring back the Pirate theme which included the conquistador minfig (et al) pictured above and in the banner on this forum! The original post suggested Playmobil was doing something LEGO had never done and should do. I was simply trying to point out that LEGO in fact already had conquistadors and had abandoned them along with our favorite theme. :-/
